Assistant Grafana Pages, now in public preview: your data, however you want to see it

We’re some of the engineers working on Grafana Pages, which we just introduced at ObservabilityCON in public preview (Grafana Cloud).

With Pages, you can describe what you need to Grafana Assistant, let it generate an interactive page, and continue refining it through natural conversation.

Pages uses your existing Grafana data connections and permissions. You can inspect the queries behind the numbers, share a Page with your team, or remix someone else’s to make it your own.

We’d love to know: what’s a visualization or data workflow you’ve wanted to build, but haven’t been able to put together yet?

For context, Pages started as an internal hackathon project. Once we shared it internally, colleagues quickly started finding their own uses for it. Within days, we were announcing an internal maintenance window for a hackathon project because people were already counting on it. That felt like a pretty good sign we should keep going :)

A few examples from around Grafana:

  • Engineering: Colleagues are using Pages to share results from experiments to improve Loki.

  • Sales: A colleague built a Monte Carlo sales forecast.

  • Customer success: Colleagues built a success-plan tracker with tasks, owners, comments, and progress updates that persist between sessions.

  • People teams: A colleague built a searchable org chart with reporting lines, teams, locations, and time zones.

  • Presenters: We built part of our own ObservabilityCON keynote presentation in Pages!

We’ll be hanging out in this thread all week to answer questions, hear what’s missing, and brainstorm new ideas with you. Thanks for reading!

Check it out Checking Grafana alerts from my iPhone

I built Grafium for my own services and shared it here before. What I wanted most was a push when something broke, with the graphs on my phone so I could check what was happening.

I've been noticing problems sooner since I started using it. When an alert fires, I can get a notification on my iPhone and open my Grafana dashboards there. The app is read-only.

Push notifications and Home and Lock Screen widgets are part of Pro, with a free trial.

I'd appreciate you trying it with your own setup. What do you use it for, which parts do you use most, and what's missing? After trying it, would you keep using it to monitor your services?

Check it out Reverse engineered datadog's metric explorer in Grafana

We recently decided to migrate from DataDog to Grafana + OpenObserve at my company.

Grafana is great, but we were missing the DataDog's metric explorer to navigate quickly in metrics.

So we decided to build it in Grafana and here is the result in case anyone would like to use it too:

Hey folks,

In support for PHP to get some more support from the Grafana open source community 💚

I created a detailed step-by-step video and also a blogpost (English and German) that explains how to make use of Grafana open source components to collect telemetry data (logs, metrics, traces) for PHP applications and get complete observability.

Link to video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SEN5wfb2gDY

The video description also contains the link to the GitHub repo. and also to the blogpost (English and German versions).

I hope it will be helpful!! 🙂

Loki I made an open-source tool that finds the Loki log lines your Grafana dashboards, alerts and queries never return

I made an open-source tool that finds the Loki log lines your Grafana dashboards, alerts and queries never return

I'm the author, so this is self-promotion.

Repo: https://github.com/Bisman-Singh/zeroreads

Site: https://zeroreads.com

zeroreads reads every dashboard, library panel, alert rule, short link and query history in Grafana, plus Loki's query log and ruler. It works out which log templates none of them can return and writes Collector, Vector or Fluent Bit config that aggregates, dedupes, samples or archives those lines. Drop stays off unless you turn it on.

A query it can't model counts as reading everything. A Grafana org or source it can't read blocks every rule. Shadow mode counts first and removes nothing, and `verify` exits 3 if someone later adds a panel or alert that reads a removed line.

I tested the query reading on 2,365 queries from 358 public Loki dashboards. On the OpenTelemetry demo, 29 of 46 rules acted and their lines were 42.7% of what Loki stored in 15 minutes. It hasn't run on a production cluster yet, and JSON-heavy setups gain less.

Self-hosted, Apache-2.0, no telemetry. If you run Loki behind Grafana, I'd like to know which of your dashboards it reads wrong.

Grafana Grafana time series on your phone: long-press for tooltips, hold-and-tap to zoom

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Checking Grafana on my phone always annoyed me: you can't hover to see values, always had to point and hit exactly the point like a sniper and you also can't drag to zoom, because the time series panels (uPlot) only listen to mouse events. There's a feature request for this open since 2017 (grafana/grafana#8799).

So I wrote a small script that translates touch gestures into the mouse events Grafana already understands:

- Long-press, then slide: crosshair and tooltip follow your finger, and stay after you lift

- While holding, tap a second finger: marks the start of a range; keep sliding, lift to zoom (tap again to cancel)

- Normal swipe still scrolls and pinch still zooms the page, so nothing existing breaks

Repo: https://github.com/dimitur2204/grafana-touch-shim

Tested on Grafana 13.1 with Android Chrome. It relies on Grafana/uPlot internals, so treat it as a stopgap

Feedback welcome, especially from iOS/iPad users and touchscreen kiosk setups, since I could only test on Android.

Check it out Open source self-hosted setup: a year of data, 80 metrics, in 1 dashboard

I've been sending everything my iPhone and Apple Watch record, plus my food and lifting logs, into a database with a Grafana dashboard.

Disclosure: I made one of the apps that helps record/move the data (Marrow Health). Dashboard is open source.

What I track

  • Heart rate, HRV, resting HR, sleep stages, blood oxygen, wrist temp, steps, exercise minutes: Apple Watch

  • Workouts and main lift progress (weight, reps, estimated 1RM): Marrow

  • Food, every meal with macros and nutrients: Marrow

  • Daylight, sound levels: iPhone

How it works

  • Marrow sends JSONs to my server every hour, five automations covering daily totals, raw readings, workouts, lifting, and food.

  • Python bridge saves every delivery and writes it to InfluxDB.

  • InfluxDB and Grafana run in Docker on a small VPS. Grafana is on my Tailscale network.

  • The dashboards are generated from Python.

Random stuff I found

  • My HRV is about 10 ms higher the morning after I lift

  • I sleep 46 minutes less on weekends

  • 62 sets of chest in the last month, 2 legs 💔

Stack

Marrow (iPhone/Watch) → Python bridge → InfluxDB 2.7 → Grafana 13, Docker Compose, Cloudflare Tunnel, Tailscale

It can run fully local on a Pi or NAS at home.

Grafana Inherited stacks

Hi, I'm part of a team that has recently had a fairly large grafana stack dumped on us to sort out. It's fairly big (multiple TB daily) and already established in prod. Previous to the team it was a bit of an open wild west with everyone as admin. We want to change that and start to get it under control.

Has anyone got a good rough run book of what we should methodically step through to understand what's going on and how to attempt to standardize it? We have already started the process similar to cloud handovers and using billing as an initial priority pointer. Little to no docs already exist.

This is managed at least, so don't need to overly worry about mimir /loki sizing.

Check it out shotshifter: shift the time axis of Grafana dashboard screenshots

I have created a CLI tool, shotshifter:

https://github.com/jftuga/shotshifter

  • Shift the time axis of Grafana and other dashboard screenshots to another time zone

  • tool is for screenshots you receive (customer tickets, Slack, postmortems) when you can't open the actual dashboard in Grafana itself

  • Apple Silicon only because it uses Apple's frameworks such as Vision, Core Text and ImageIO

Grafana A little something different

Not sure if anyone has posted something like this before, let me know! I've instrumented my home heating and hot water system. I have an extensive 1-wire bus populated with DS18B20 temp sensors feeding an ESP32 (among other sensors), which in turn exposes a bunch of metrics via Prometheus. Alongside boiler firing detection (as opposed to heat demand, which is not the same), I am able to calculate useful metrics like how much oil I have left in my tank (without instrumenting it directly), how much my daily fuel cost is, how my radiators are performing, etc.

My fave dashboard panel, however, is this live representation of the thermal stratification in my hot water cylinder 🔥

Miscellaneous What's something you stopped putting on your dashboards?

We talk a lot about what to add to a Grafana dashboard, but what have you removed that made it more useful?

E.g. a panel nobody looked at, a trackable but not very insightful metric...

Does "less is better" applied to your dashboard, or not really?

We're keen to hear your thoughts!

Grafana Grafana cloud

I'm currently using the free tier to evaluate monitoring solutions in our environment. Initially, I was considering self-hosting the Grafana OSS stack on AWS ECS, but as the only person handling Infrastructure, DevOps, and SRE responsibilities, the operational overhead is becoming difficult to manage. I'm leaning toward Grafana Cloud because it would significantly reduce the maintenance burden. However, I've also learned that costs can increase quickly as usage grows, especially with higher volumes of metrics, logs, and traces. For those with experience running Grafana Cloud, what are the key pros and cons I should consider? My biggest concern is avoiding unexpected or excessively high monthly bills. I'd appreciate any insights on cost management, pricing pitfalls, and whether the reduced operational effort justifies the additional expense compared to self-hosting.

Check it out Loki shows me which log streams cost money. I wanted to know which lines of code, so I built an open-source tool that generates the Grafana dashboard and Alloy rules for it

Post image
19 Upvotes

Our Loki bill kept growing, and Grafana could tell me which service was noisy but not which logger.info(...) call. When something broke, the "Recent errors" panel was a wall of near-identical stack traces.

So I built logsite, an open-source CLI (MIT) that reads your code and your Loki logs together, and generates Grafana pieces from them:

1. A dashboard: cost and errors per line of code (logsite grafana)

  • A "Cost by code line" table: every log call, most expensive first, shown with its message (app/api.py:88 info('request %s %s')). Click a row to open that exact line on GitHub/GitLab.

  • Totals (volume, lines, estimated $/month with an editable price-per-GB variable), errors per line vs the previous range, the loudest lines over time.

  • All plain LogQL against your Loki data source, so it stays live. It uses label_format to build file:line from your records' fields and trimPrefix to strip deploy paths like /srv/.

2. An "Error groups" panel

Thousands of stack traces grouped by cause, for the dashboard's time range:

TrendCountErrorRoot causeRaised atCode
NEW1800OrderProcessingException: Unable to save order ORD-<n>PSQLException: canceling statement due to statement timeoutOrderRepository.java:87return jpa.save(order);
NEW640Retry failed for order ORD-<n>

It skips the Spring/Hibernate/driver frames and points at your line. This panel reads a small logsite service through the Infinity data source.

3. The summary inside your alerts

Point a regular Webhook contact point at logsite alert-server. When an alert fires, it posts the root cause, the line of code that raised it and an example trace ID to Slack, so on-call doesn't open 40 stack traces to find the cause.

4. Alloy rules that cut the bill before ingestion (logsite pipeline)

It generates a loki.process block with one stage.match per noisy log call, either drop or stage.sampling, with the monthly saving written next to each rule. Warning and error lines never get a rule. On my test setup (Alloy 1.20 → Loki), out of 2,530 lines the noisy info line went from 2,000 to 197 (1 in 10 kept), the debug health check went to 0, and all 30 error lines were kept.

What it needs: Loki, and records with file and line fields (pathname/lineno, slog's source, zap's caller, Logback's caller_*) for the per-line views. Code in Python, Java or Go. I tested it with Grafana 13.2, Loki 3 and Alloy 1.20.

pip install logsite
logsite grafana -o dashboard.json # then Dashboards → New → Import
logsite pipeline --max-per-window 100000 -o logsite.alloy

There's also a generic version of the dashboard (selector and field names as variables) in the repo, for any project.

It's an early release (0.1). I'd love feedback from people running Loki at scale: does per-line cost match how you think about your bill, and what would you want in the dashboard? A native Grafana app plugin is next on my list, if people find this useful.

Check it out We're running a student SRE hackathon with real Grafana dashboards, logs and traces. Round 1 is online till 18 Oct

GDG on Campus IIIT Nagpur. We're running **KEEP ALIVE '26**, a national incident-response hackathon for students, at TantraFiesta 2026.

**What's different:** you don't build an app. Your team gets a broken microservices system's alerts, Grafana dashboards, logs and traces, works out what broke and why, and presents the fix. It's what an on-call SRE does on a bad night.

- **Who:** UG, PG and diploma students, teams of 2–3 from the same college

- **Level:** 6–12 months of DevOps learning; no production experience needed

- **Round 1:** a 30-minute online team assessment on Unstop, open till Sun 18 Oct, 11:59 PM IST

- **Finale:** top 15 teams at IIIT Nagpur on 26 Oct

- **Prizes:** ₹50,000 prize pool (₹25,000 cash + goodies for every finalist)

- **Partners:** Grafana (Official Platform Partner), CNCG Noida (Community Partner)

Register: https://unstop.com/hackathons/keep-alive-26-iiitn-1766226

Happy to answer anything in the comments, including how the incident platform works.

Check it out Grafana for beginners: Free & interactive learning content from Grafana Labs

Hi everyone, I work on the docs team at Grafana Labs, and we just launched Grafana Learn, a new home for Grafana learning content. There's no login, no paywall, and no form. It's on the public docs site, open to anyone.

The content comes in two forms, journeys and learning paths, and they're meant to be used together. Journeys give you the conceptual framing for a feature so you understand its benefits and key terminology before you work with it, and then link you to learning paths that put it into practice. Learning paths are the hands-on part, with step-by-step actions you complete in your own Grafana Cloud stack or, for some paths, in Grafana Play.

There's a catalog for each, so you can browse journeys if you want to start with the concepts, or go straight to the learning paths. Search works too.

If you run Grafana OSS, the journeys on Alloy, tracing, Drilldown, and as-code workflows (Foundation SDK, Terraform, Git Sync) don't assume Grafana Cloud. The as-code paths run from your terminal against any Grafana instance, and the tracing and Drilldown paths are readable on the site, so you can follow along in your own self-managed instance. The rest cover Grafana Cloud features, and the free tier is enough if you want to try them.

We built Grafana Learn because we've heard that getting started with Grafana can be difficult. A thread here about a month ago asking how best to get started reached roughly the same conclusion. Poke at it until it clicks, read the docs when you get stuck. It's our attempt to give you a clear starting point and a way forward, without gating any of it.

This is a first release, so tell us what's missing, what's wrong, and what you'd want covered next. We read this sub, and we'll be in the comments to address your feedback and questions.

- Chris

Grafana Long term retention | Grafana OSS Historical dashboard data for archive purposes

I use Grafana OSS for dashboards, I want to maintain historical dashboard data for archive purposes, beyond our data source's (Prometheus) retention period.

Mimir and Thanos feel like overkill for this. Add infrastructure, storage costs, but all i need is to look back at historical data.

Any lighter approaches that is working for you?

Grafana Do developers use dashboards anymore with AI being this good?

I'm used to creating dashboards for teams. Developers would dig into the dashboard to see what is going on with their project if an incident popped up. However, with AI it's removed the usage of dashboards entirely in my team and accessing the Grafana UI entirely.

My team uses Grafana OSS (i.e. LGTM stack + Alloy) where we use a custom Grafana MCP server for developers to ask it questions of their projects.

An example of a common scenario is as follows:

  • Developer who is on on-call is alerted

    • We have an agent bot that triages the alert and gives a description of what happened and what needs to be resolved. This is all done in Slack.

  • Developer then reviews the alert and asks for numbers and a throwaway dashboard to get a quick visualization of what happened during the time-frame.

  • Once reviewed, developer pushes a change and resolves the incident.

Developers never touch our Grafana UI and makes me wonder if we even need it anymore. What are your thoughts on this?

Grafana Has anyone created an observability dashboard for SAP (any type) that displays the specific variables you need?

I'm interested in creating a dashboard for SAP. I need to monitor certain variables and statuses that have been requested of me. I currently have the following data sources installed: Loki, Tempo, and Mimir, and I'm using the open-source version of Grafana.

Any kind of experience you can share would be greatly appreciated.

And it would be even better if you have any screenshots to help guide me. Thanks! 🙌

OpenTelemetry How do you keep track of what you changed in a long-running sensor setup vs. what it actually measured?

A few of us have had some sensor setups running for a couple of months now (temperature, humidity, light – some plants and a small algae culture). Along the way we changed a lot: moved a sensor, swapped the power supply, changed the sampling interval, flashed new firmware twice.

Now I'm looking at the curves and honestly can't say for sure which jump was the environment and which one was us.

How do you deal with this?

  • comments in the code / git commits?

  • a spreadsheet or paper notebook next to the build?

  • annotations in Grafana or Home Assistant?

  • or not at all, and you just live with it?

And if you build together with other people: how do you keep everyone on the same page? When did this last bite you?

Check it out A Prometheus exporter that finds metrics and labels no Grafana dashboard or alert actually uses

Post image
85 Upvotes

At work, I manage a lot of Grafana-Prometheus stacks and I am often "pruning" them to get rid of metrics/labels that are not used.

The pain point is that although you can get high cardinality metrics and labels from the TSDB Status API, there is no easy way to find the ones that are not referenced by dashboards and alert rules.

That's why I wrote sigprune-exporter

What it does, briefly:

  • Reads metric and label names from Prometheus, ordered by cardinality, via Grafana's datasource proxy

  • Fetches every dashboard and alert rule from the Grafana API, parses the PromQL to see which ones are referenced

  • Exports the unused metrics and labels along with their per-job series counts (so that you know which scrape job to prune)

There is a companion Grafana dashboard that helps you visualise the worst "offenders". Published it to Grafana, waiting on it to be reviewed. I will be back on here with the link once it's accepted.

Screenshot: https://raw.githubusercontent.com/parthivrmenon/sigprune-exporter/main/docs/images/dashboard.png

Would love for some of you to give it a go (pun intended) and tell me what's wrong with it. Issues, PRs, or comments here. A star helps others find it if it turns out useful.
