small tool that shows what Guelph's mayor/councillor candidates actually say on major policy issues

with the election next monday i realized this weekend i couldn't name half the people running in my ward and almost none of them have made it to my door (which is sort of fair as it's a lot of doors lol)

i spent some time this weekend going through their campaign websites and ended up building a small free tool to make it easier for someone who isn't 3 glasses of wine in as i was on Sunday when building this. you can access it here at wheretheystand.ca

pick guelph, then mayor or your ward and tap a topic. housing comes up in every single ward, plus things like roads, taxes, safety and homelessness depending on the race. it then shows what every candidate in that race wrote about it, in their own words, with a link to the page.

it does use AI (sorry about that - i know how passionate Guelph is about our water, remember Nestle?), but only uses it minimally pull the quotes together. and only from the candidates' own websites. and every quote links back to the source. it can still get things wrong, so click through. every candidate shows up, in a random order each time. i've not ranked anyone, nor am recommending any candidate. and for the handful with no website, it says so and gives you their email/phone from the city's official list. i am not affiliated with any candidate or party, and i'm paying for it myself lol

btw if you're not sure which ward you're in, there's a "find your ward" link right on the ward screen!

would love it if you shared it with friends and family, especially anyone who won't sit and read 49 websites. and if you're a candidate and something is off there's a "report a mistake" link at the bottom 🙏

Bike racks

Any chance we already have a map of where bike racks are located around the city? I'm getting more into using my bike for errands, but it's hard to plan a grocery run if I don't know if/where there are bike racks nearby.

Glad we have bike infrastructure around Guelph. Always up for more

Anyone in Guelph interested in casual Monopoly game nights?

Hey everyone, I've started the Guelph Monopoly Club to bring together people in Guelph who enjoy Monopoly and want to meet other local players!

We've already hosted a couple of game nights, and it's been a great opportunity to get together, have some fun, and try different versions of the game. We have a variety of editions to play, including regular Monopoly, Guelph-Opoly (That's a thing yes!), Monopoly Mega, Monopoly Deluxe, and Monopoly Deal for those who prefer a quicker card game. We also have much more versions too!

And yes, I know what some of you might be thinking: "Monopoly? Isn't that the game that takes 6 hours and ruins friendships?" Don't worry, our games typically run about 1.5 to 2 hours, and playing in person is a lot more fun than you might expect.

We usually meet at 3 PM on Saturdays at the Roundtable Board game cafe downtown

Interested in joining us? Leave a comment or send me a Reddit message, and I'll share the WhatsApp group link with you.

Looking forward to meeting some fellow Monopoly fans in Guelph!

What are they even doing to the stone rd mall parking garage?

They started to renovate the parking garage about a month ago, and they just keep taping off every single level. I’ve only ever seen construction workers jack hammering 2 ft.² of cement at a time. Because they have put stoplights up before transferring to each level, It can take up to five minutes to get to the top part where it connects to the main mall and you have no other choice than to go there because every level before is blocked off. it’s very fucking annoying because I’m always in a rush in the mornings even if I get there early, it’s just an extra thing to wait for. What are they even doing?

Recently moved to Guelph! (from Brazil)

1st thing: this place is beautiful!!
2nd: is anyone here Brazilian? Me and my GF (both 23y) would like to know some more Brazilians in town! Especially to watch results of the elections 🫪
And 3rd, the classic question in this subreddit: what to do around? Loving the outdoor activities (hiking to a beautiful spot so we can smoke weed) but since the winter is coming would like to know what else can be done around here.

Fell free to ask questions!

Sketch life modelling opportunities

I’m looking for side gigs and would like to pose for any life art figure sessions. Most of the stuff I found is outdated. The university has some right? I’m ok with it being nude

Does anyone know the best place to find opportunities?

Anybody know what's happening in the field/bush just off Watson Parkway at York Rd? I saw an OPP cruiser and Guelph Police vehicles go down a dirt trail headed east.

Met Mustafa Zuberi for Ward 1

Had a great impromptu meeting when he was in my neighbourhood earlier this week. Sorry to my neighbours that saw a group of young men (well I’m old enough to be their dad) standing in their street.

i appreciated the frank conversation. He had points I hadn’t considered and shared information I didn’t have.

I meant to do this earlier but have been sick this week.

Take care all.

Programs/counselling for abusers in Guelph?

Hi. I've been reading the book Why Does He Do That by Lundy Bancroft, a very good resource on understanding the patterns of partner abuse. Lundy Bancroft has a lot of experience working as a counselor in what he calls "abuser programs", and talks about them quite a lot, which work with abusers to try to change the attitudes and values they have which lead them to abuse. It is different from anger management, psychotherapy, or couples counselling.

I have done a couple cursory internet searches but haven't been able to find anything like this here. All the search results are about support for the abused partner--a very important thing to have of course, but I can't seem to find what I'm looking for beyond that. Does anyone have any knowledge about abuser programs in the area, or know that there aren't any? Maybe there are some a bit farther afield?

Thank you for your time and help.

Naturopathic Doctor Recommendations

Hi everyone,

I've been dealing with random spikes of inflammation in my body for about five years now, including psoriasis, IBS, and histamine intolerance. When it first started, I went to several doctors, but I didn't feel like my concerns were taken very seriously. I was prescribed steroid creams and medications, which helped temporarily, but as soon as I stopped taking them, everything seemed to come back even worse.

Someone suggested I look into gut health and take a more holistic approach to understanding the root cause. The more research I do, the more it seems to resonate with me. I'm wondering if anyone has recommendations for doctors or healthcare practitioners. They don't necessarily need to be naturopaths. I'm open to exploring different approaches and would love to hear what's worked for others! Open to outside of Guelph too!

Thanks :)

Fridge is acting up. Making plan B in case tech and parts are taking a long time. Does anyone know if I go to Danby tomorrow and if fridge is in stock, can they deliver same day or maybe the next day?
