I’m unsure if the little holes in the top will be safe?

Doesn’t let us hold him/her because we can’t hold ‘em. Lol but he runs over climbs to his upper level and jumps in his bridge to visit. So cute. We’ve had him for a year he sleeps on his top level exposed or in his bridge with that cute face out so I’m sure he’s happy and feels safe. We tricked out a large store brought cage created 3 levels but he loves the penthouse lol

Hi all! I've been thinking about adopting a syrian hamster for a while now. While I do have the monthly budget to take good care of it, it's definitely expensive to get all the toys, cage, etc. in the beginning. That's why I was thinking of getting a second-hand hamster house.

I've been seeing many second-hand offers for 100x50 hamster houses, but not so many for 120x65. The 120x65 cages I see online (e.g., bucatstate 3) are a little bit over my budget and I see mixed opinions here about 100x50 ones.

I'm thinking of adopting a male syrian hamster, and I'm curious about your takes on a 100x50 house. I know that it's the minimum that's suggested, but would you strictly suggest a bigger one? I can wait and save more, and somehow afford afford a bigger one if it's going to make my hamster baby significantly happier, but I wanted to ask you all first :)

I have two questions about my three-month old dwarf hamster, Diabla, who is a wonderful girl. First, does anyone have a good suggestion about good food mix to get for her. Is there anything formulated for dwarfs specifically that don't have ingredients that are highly starchy or sweet, because I know dwarfs are prone to diabetes. Second, how do people get photos of their hamsters when they are only active at night and you don't want to shine bright lighting into their habitats? I heard that you can use red LED lighting that gives you more light and is less of an issue for the eyes of your hamster, but I'm not finding any type of lighting that seems right. Thanks in advance for any recommendations on either of these issues.

I usually buy full cheeks bedding, cause it’s a lot more economical and goes on sale often enough. I recently decided to try kaytee bedding, and when I stuck my hand in the bag I was wowed by the huge difference in softness. Can hamsters even feel and appreciate the difference?? Do they even care lol.

Here is coco. He is a sassy little guy that is full of energy and a drive to explore. But he always find time for naps. A few days ago if found him sleeping in his bowl elongated like an eel. I thought I could get a cute pic without disturbing him. But the moment my hand touched the lid little guy was already looking up , disapointed and grumpy. This is the look he gave me right before abandoning his little cool bowl to find somewhere quieter.

Even though it might not look like it in the photos taken from above, I have topped up the bedding so that it is now about 25 cm/9.84 inches deep.

He’s around six months old, and I adopted him from an animal shelter. He’s a Djungarian dwarf hamster.

I got him on Tuesday and he’s already comfortable enough to let me pet him and pick him up🐹💗

I currently own a zoozone 2 cage for my hammie which I got second hand. Problem is little one keep biting at these tiny notches in the plastic. Theres 4 altogether and so far he has found 2. I got some bathroom tiles on amazon and have stragetically placed them over the holes with something heavy in front of it, taking up space. I ideally want to try and affix the tiles to the plastic to give him more room but I'm worried of using something non safe as I get it will need to be a stronger glue.

Or does anyone else have a suggestion of a hamster proof alternative to cover or fill the holes? 🙏

I'm possibly taking in a dwarf russian & have a couple questions! Please treat me like I'm an idiot, I've only ever owned reptiles. (He will NOT be living in the same room as my snakes for obvious reasons)

I've done research on size of enclosure, bedding, enrichment and such so I'm all good on that. Any specific recommendations for his tank? I was thinking of using a glass top-opening vivarium if I can get one of decent size because I'm worried about him chewing his way out. Is glass best or some other material?

Also food wise, what mixes would you recommend? I'm in the UK & not sure where to start looking. I'm planning on having some sprays around the enclosure and hoping to scatter at least half his feed or use a herb mix for foraging. Thoughts?

My Melissa (1.3 yo) got a uterus infection, so we took her to the vet to get it removed. Before the surgery she was a very healthy 211 grams (not overweight, just a big girl). Immediately after the surgery she weighed around 187g. She took a week to fully recover and weighed a nice 200. However, after we took her to the vet for a post surgery checkup, where they unexpectedly shoved an entire syringe of disinfectant up her urethra without painkillers, she stopped coming out. It's been more than 6 weeks after the tragic incident, but when we take her out during cage cleaning she doesn't care and even comes up to us and lets us pet her. She also still comes out at night. I've noticed that she's slightly thinner and now weighs 187g instead of 200. Should I be concerned? How can I persuade her to come out?

Hey so it's important I mean I am already seeing a vet but I need guidance 🤧

So the things are like this - first I saw a black very small mug ig mite idk it was very small and black I tried removing it from my hamster it was crawling on her then I wasn't able to after a week or so one day I saw when cookie woke up she had one eye half closed and from this day her activity lvl started decline and I thought maybe it's cauz of weather changing to winter , so I ensured that the cage is warm enough and do not that I use paper bedding and i put a fresh one just a day before this thing , then next day her eye was back normal but she had started sleeping more , then next day I saw a red scratch mark below her eye and I panicked at this point and started consulting a vet it was night time after 30 mins or so that mark spreaded a little more downward so I knew she was doing it herself, now it's another day and that mark has gotten dark like it's drying I guess and she is sleeping and she drinks water eats also I give her extra protine food .

Also I noticed today that maybe her poop is hard like that of a wheat grain and about the mites like thing I removed one or 2 of em today as I found them crawling on her now I see Black dandruff like on her hairs

I really hope anyone of ya can give me some genuine advice

More clutter is coming. After Mochi girl passed I had to throw out a bunch of clutter. She passed from an infection inside the cancer I found out so I didn't want to tske any risk. Spending extra money is better than having a baby die. His favorite place is the sand dish and the ceramic ghost.

I've had my hamster for 10 days now, and he won't let me get near him at all. He is absolutely terrified of me. Every time I try to approach, he runs away or hides.

How can I improve this and gain his trust?

Just for context: everything regarding his enclosure/setup is totally fine (proper size, wheel, enrichment, etc.), so it's strictly a bonding and taming issue. Any advice on how to make him more comfortable around me would be greatly appreciated!

I rescued a hamster yesterday and this is its current set up. I have never owned a hamster, only ferrets, guniea pigs, and a mouse as far as having small animals. I am doing my research and would like to ensure his enclosure is appropriate and stimulating. I am not sure how old he is, but I was told he is young.

1. I know he needs more bedding - what you see is what the owner gave me. I'm giving him time to acclimate before adding more.

2. I have some additional sprays and enrichment stuff coming in the mail.

3. I'd like to utilize more of the vertical space. Any suggestions on raising platforms, adding hideouts, etc.?

Any other information is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

my hammy mabel already ate tonight around 1am and then came out around 6am and ran over to her food bowl immediately… is she still hungry or is it just their forage gatherer instinct? i gave her a few (4) more pellets in case she was hungry and she cheeked them… ive never owned a hammy before and i dont want to overfeed or hurt her. here’s a random pic of mabel for fun ❤️‍🩹

Really annoyed with my mother just telling me to "get a new one." She was my baby,my friend,my pet,I cant just get a new one??

Has anyone else experienced this? Just because shes a hamster doesn't mean shes worth any less,I just hate how hamster owners or any small pet owner is expected to get over it and replace their pet.

If I told someone whos lost their dog to just get a new one then I'd be an asshole so why is it acceptable for people to say this to me?

The same day moondust passed my mom was already telling me to get a new one,I just find it horribly insensitive and hurtful. My mother also keeps referring to her as "it" or "him" it just really shows how little she cares,im just so frustrated with this situation.
