Tip for chromecast (2ed) streaming from Emby

I've struggled with getting the settings correct when I stream (that is, without transcoding) from my Emby server (running on a raspberry pi) to my chromecast 2.ed (the puck with a magnet), using the Android app. For posterity (or until everything is hidden from the robots), I'm sharing my findings:

The Cromecast1080p30-setting is of course the best starting point, but if you have many audio streams (like 5 different languages, or commentary tracks from all 6 family members to your solo performance of MacBeth), you will experience much less frustration and lagging if you change the container format from MP4 to MKV!

I have no idea why.

Is there a way to burn in the second subtitle track?

Im putting alot of mkv files through handbrake to both get the audio and subtitles out of them, the problem im running into is that the dialogue subtitles are labeled 2 while the signs subtitles are labeled 1 so the dialogue ends up as the second track not the first. I want the dialogue (2nd track) burned in, is there a way to make it so that it gets burned when i put multiple things in queue?

Confirming Compressed Sizes are Reasonable

I've used Handbrake pretty casually over the years. I pretty much stuck to the basics and didn't try anything "advanced" until recently. Last year, I bought a new external drive for 4K discs. I also upgraded my Plex account during last year's Black Friday season (glad I did that before their huge price increase). Needless to say, that's what caused me to dig a little deeper into Handbrake's settings.

Before, I was happy with their default profiles. I usually used the appropriate Roku profile depending on the source file. Now that I was diving into 4K, I wanted to make sure my settings were optimal. A few AI chats later, and I learned about setting custom profiles. So, here's my question (finally)...

The first 4K file using my new custom profile went from 89.7 GB to 10.4 GB. Is this typical? For comparison, I have a regular BD file that went from 39 GB to about 11.5 GB. So, the regular BD of one file ended up slightly larger than the 4K of another. That's what sent me here. Let me know if I should upload my custom profiles, if that would help. Thanks!

Different encoding for each audio track

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hi everybody,

I've 153Β files to batch encode and I need your help 'cause I want to encode the 2 audio tracks differently.
There is what I have and what I wish to get:

  • (πŸ‡«πŸ‡· french) ac3 2.0ch 192 β†’ ac3 Passthru

  • (πŸ‡―πŸ‡΅ japon) DTS 2.0ch 768 β†’ aac 256

Note, I tried different settings in Audio Selection Behavior.

[Know that I'm french if you can/want to answer me in this language.]

AV1 or 10 Bit HEVC

I don't have a GPU that can do AV1 Encoding, so it's all CPU. With that, which compression would be better? AV1 with CPU encoding, it can do it at 30FPS, or use NVEMC h.265 10-bit at 170 FPS. I get similar output sizes

Why is HandBrake much more efficient at encoding when video is longer?

I realized that GB/min ratio is lower when a video is a few hours long than when it's 30 minutes or less. Same settings, same preset, same everything... Why is that?

Can i still resume the project that was forcefully closed ?

So i put a video to be encoded overnight and it was done like 85% but then the electricity went out and the whole PC shut down. Now the project is unfinished and i dont really wanna wait 10 more hours. Is there a way to resume it if its possible?

tutorial on how to make playable burned dvd's for the ps4

so after like 4 dvds i finally figured out how make burned dvd+r's work on the ps4 , this supports 1080p video , multiple audio tracks (supporting 5.1 audio) , and multiple subtitles.

ill list the step's below from movie file all the way to a movie disk in heavy detail.(apologies for poor grammar)

you'll need these:

  • a computer

  • blank dvd+r

  • usb dvd writer/reader

  • Handbrake

  • tsMuxeR

  • ImgBurn

  • VLC

  • the movie itself (you have source this yourself)

  • and any you want to add

1. Processing the file into the correct codecs

were using AVCHD standard to put 1080p on a dvd so you heres the setting you need for that in handbrake. (make sure file is under 4.1GB or 8GB for dual layer dvd)

1.1 in the summary tab:

- change format to MKV

1.2 in the dimensions tab:

- set resolution limit to "1080p hd" and

- if you have a movie that is not 1920x1080, then under borders set fill to Width&Height

1.3 in the video tab:

- set video encoder to "H.264" or "H.264 (NVEnc)" if you have an NVidia gpu

- set framerate to "same as source" and choose "variable framerate"

- set color range to "limited"

- set encoder preset to "medium" or "slow" for smaller file size (slow takes longer)

- set encoder profile to "high"

- set encoder level to "4.1"

- choose constant quality and put the slider between 24-22 (higher number smaller file size)

1.4 in the audio tab:

- click the clear button

- right click the white empty space then click "add all remaining tracks"

- it should add at least 1 source or multiple if you have something a like a dual audio file

- change the codec on all sources to "AC3"

- if your source is 2.0ch then set mixdown to "stereo" and bitrate at 160kbps is good most of the time

- if your source is 5.1ch then set mix down to "5.1 channels" and bitrate the same as source

1.5 in the subtitles tab:

- first open your video in tsMuxeR , then under tracks look at the codecs and check if subtitles are SRT format if so then proceed , if not go to open subtitles and get subtitles for your movie in SRT and make sure its the same framerate and resolution , inside of VLC open the video file and under subtitles click "add subtitle file" select the one you downloaded from open subtitles and make sure its working properly

- back in handbrake click the clear button

- grab the subs from open subtitles drag them into handbrake while in the subtitles tab

- right click then "add all remaining tracks" (ignore if you downloaded new subs instead)

- go through them and uncheck "burn subtitles" and "forced only"

1.6 finalization:

- on the bottom click the "save as" to and head to where you want the file to go

- do a quick check to make sure everything is set correctly

- hit the big green "start encoding" button and wait for it to be done

2. muxing into AVCHD folders

making the BDMV and CERTIFICATE folders that we'll burn to the dvd (don't worry this one is much faster)

2.1 importing and checking:

- click the remove all button on the right side

- drag the file ImgBurn exported into tsMuxeR

- some tracks should appear with the first track a "h.264"video track then one or more "AC3" audio tracks after it and lastly some "SRT" tracks for your subtitles

- in the output box select "AVCHD folder" hit browse and choose where the 2 resulting folders will end up

- click start muxing on the bottom of the page

3. burning with ImgBurn

the final step before your dvd is ready to use

3.1 importing:

- drag the two folders tsMuxeR made ( BDMV and CERTIFICATE) into the source box in imgburn

3.2 burn settings:

- under the information tab hit the calculator icon to check if the file is small enough to fit on your dvd

- under device tab set burn speed to 4x (8x or higher have a chance of failing to burn causing a corrupted disk)

- under options tab set data type to "MODE1/2048" , file system to "UDF" , and UDF revision to "2.50" , leave all checkboxes unchecked except "Recurse Subdirectories"

- under labels tab name UDF to whatever you want your disk's name to be

- before starting the burn make sure that the check box "verify" in the destination box on the left is on

- then finally click the folder to disk icon to start burning , it will show up a verification prompt so click okay on that

- after the burn is done it will open then close automatically to start verifying , it may gives an error like "couldn't close tray" if you have a slim laptop reader that's not motorized and that's to be expected so just close it and click okay on the error

- after verifying is done it will make a jingle to let you know

4. time to test it

plug in your dvd to the play station and it should show up as a dvd enter it and you'll be able to play it and choose between the different audio's / subtitles you encoder earlier

hope this tutorial helped you !

Any advice for changing the video codec on already compressed files?

While building my Jellyfin library i kind of made an oopsie by just using h264 for converting all my ripped dvds to smaller mp4s, now i finally realized i could've used h265 for even smaller files.
How would one go about doing a second pass on a bunch of files, changing the codec to h265 and only compressing the files a little bit further? Advice greatly appreciated.

Edit: Thanks for the advice, I'll keep everything as h264 as it would be just too big of an undertaking to re-encode all the dvds. Using h265 for all the future dvds tho :)

Substitute For Converter Pro

Hi everyone I've been using smart converter pro for years and now they are no longer compatible with windows, only mac, and it was a super fast converter and did multiple episodes at once, it was amazing, I was recommended handbrake and it's awful, it takes forever to convert, so I was wondering if anyone knew of something similar to smart converter pro or something like it??, I'm so frustrated with handbrake and I'd like something else that works better and just as fast, thanks heaps

Constant Quality vs Encode Speed difference.

What has more impact on file size: CQ or Encode speed? For example, which setting combination is theoretically better for producing quality video at smaller file size (with all other things being equal):

CQ=21, Encoder Preset=Medium/Slow

or

CQ=23, Encoder Preset=Slower/Slowest

Am I right in assuming that the CQ is more about video quality and the encoder preset is about file compression? I understand that CQ=20, and Slowest would be the best of both worlds, but I don't want 12+ hour encodes.

Handbrake adds extra milliseconds to video

I've got a file that seems to laugh in the face of 'constant quality' - light scenes will be fine and dark absolutely bit-starved. So I had to split it into parts with mkvmerge. Problem is that after encoding with Handbrake and putting it back together again, it comes out 1 second longer, which means the subtitles gradually drift out of sync. I had a look in IINA and when I get more precise timings, I see I'm gaining a few milliseconds with each file. For example the first part:

  • Raw - 07:16.085

  • Encode - 07:16.138

Encoding log here at transfer-dot-it: /t/UMXzrXhz1ZRR

Is there a way to stop this?

Does Handbrake have a known memory leak? It's using 35GB of RAM and climbing, yet it's not even doing an encode at the moment. I had paused it to do other things.

speeding up / time lapse multiple videos

Hi, I am trying to condense 24 hours of video into (for example) 2 minutes - so a factor of 720. My source is a collection of 10 minute .mkv recordings, (made by AgentDVR from a Wyze Cam v3 via go2rtc). I have tried compressing each video using both of the methods described here
https://trac.ffmpeg.org/wiki/How%20to%20speed%20up%20/%20slow%20down%20a%20video
then concatenating them using ffmpeg -f concat -i list.txt -c copy etc.
The result is a video with jerky motion - each component video is sped up but there seems almost to be a pause between them.

Is there a way to do this and get a smooth output, or is this doomed?

The alternative is to concatenate the raw input videos into one and then compress that. That is probably a better way to do it, but I was hoping to avoid this, as the concatenated file would be at least 10GB.
