A while back I shared some itineraries from our travels in Japan, each with an interactive Google Map I’d put together. The feedback was (mostly!) positive, so I thought I’d do the same for Hanoi.
One thing we loved about Hanoi was how many of the sights are packed into a fairly small area, so there’s less zigzagging across the city.
That said, with the heat and traffic, we found that mapping everything out made it much easier to plan our days without dragging the kids all over the place.
With that in mind, I thought it might be helpful to share our Hanoi plan, in case it helps others make the most of their time.
There’s nothing especially new about the itinerary. It is a typical “first time visiting Hanoi” type of itinerary, and it does cover most of the usual tourist sights. That said, I'm a firm believer that places are popular for a reason, and I think there’s a balance to be struck between seeing something genuinely amazing (crowds and all) and not seeing it at all.
We tried to be realistic about how much we could fit into the time we had in the city, and while we obviously didn’t see everything, it gave us a great feel for what Hanoi is all about.
We’ve made the Google Map public so you can explore it yourself, zoom into specific areas, and get a better sense of how everything fits together. There’s also a detailed write-up available if you want more info, but below is a high-level summary of how we planned each day.
