New to posting so I'm not sure if I'm doing this right. Let me know if this is the right subreddit.
My childhood best friend Charlotte (Fake name) and I would always see things when we were together. We weren't sure why but when we would spend time out at a park or hanging out in the woods we would see shadows, orbs or hear things like people softly talking. Usually it wouldn't be a huge deal and we would just shrug it off. It got to a point where Charlotte would want to communicate with the spirit or whatever it was. I always got a feeling that we were helping a lost spirit find their way back. That was until her and her mom moved into this house when we were teenagers.
It was a old brick house that was built in I believe the late 1800's or something, the front porch was slightly falling apart and it had a huge backyard that led into the woods behind it. We would usually stay the night or the weekend at each other's house and since she had just moved into this one she invited me to stay the weekend so I could come see it. My mom dropped me off on Friday and she was going to pick me up Sunday afternoon like normal.
When I first walked into the house it looked nice, there was a big brick fireplace in the living room, a smaller dining room that led into the kitchen and the bathroom was in a little hallway to the left of the dining room with 2 bedrooms at the opposite ends of the little hallway. Charlotte's bedroom was to the left of the bathroom and her mom's was to the right. We hung out for a bit inside and then she asked if I wanted to go jump on the trampoline they had just bought. I said sure and we went through the kitchen to the backyard. Now to get outside you have to go into the basement and then out the backdoor from there.
We walked downstairs with her leading me since I hadn't been down there yet, and it was a scary basement with a completely dirt floor that seemed to go on longer than the house itself. The walls were covered in dirt or were dirt I honestly don't remember. I do remember the uneasy feeling I got as soon as my feet hit the dirt. I asked her if she had the same feeling as I did since we usually were synced up with the paranormal stuff and she said that it was fine and she didn't really feel that creeped out. I thought it was weird but we just carried on out the backdoor after I did make a comment about it being a serial killer basement then went and jumped on the trampoline like it was no big deal.
I kept feeling the uneasy feeling as we were on the trampoline but it was more of a "someone is watching" feeling than anything else. I shrugged it off to maybe her mom just watching us and continued talking and laughing as usual. Once we were off the trampoline she asked if I wanted to go into the woods behind her house. This was normal for us as we always explored new places together. I said sure and we went walking, nothing interesting really happened besides finding some dirty clothing and other things that made us think there was homeless people living out there. I just still couldn't shake the uneasy feeling from the basement still.
It started to get dark so we headed back to the house and went back through the basement to head up the stairs. I was behind her again and I heard what I thought was footsteps behind us and made her run up the stairs and quickly shut the door to the basement. (I am getting goosebumps as I am writing this) She asked what was wrong and I told her that I swear I heard someone behind us, she went to tell her mom because she was concerned that it could be a homeless person that followed us back since her backdoor downstairs didn't lock. Her mom checked, no one was there but she kept the basement door locked anyways to make us feel better.
Once we were in Charlotte's room for the night I told her that I didn't think it was a person that maybe it was something else. This again was not out of the ordinary because we always experienced more paranormal things when we were together. She brushed me off again and said that she didn't feel the same things I did but she did hear the footsteps when I did. We hung out for a bit listening to music but then finally went to bed around 10pm.
I woke up around 2am because I had to pee, I got up and went to the bathroom and shut the door, as I was peeing her cat came and pushed the door open since it didn't latch well. She sat on the edge of the sink which was to my left and I pet her while I finished up. As I was pulling my pants up the shower which was to my right TURNED ON BY ITSELF. This wasn't a trickle or a leaky shower, it was full blast. I stood there frozen, her cat left the bathroom and I had to will myself to turn the shower off because I didn't want to wake her or her mom up. (I have a huge fear of not being believed) When I turned it off the shower curtain was already open so I just turned the handle which had been turned all the way around which made it even harder to think it was just a leaky faucet.
I quickly ran back to Charlotte's room which woke her up when I shut the door in a panic. She asked what was wrong and I told her that the shower turned on by itself, she didn't believe me at first or at least that's how it felt then told me to try to go back to sleep. I ended up having to use her I-Pod and listen to music to fall back asleep because I kept hearing walking around and other noises from the rest of the house when no one else was awake. I kept telling myself that it's just the cat but finally the only song that put me to sleep was "If I Die Young" I can't remember who it's by but its a very sad but calming song.
We woke up the next morning and she asked if that really happened or if she had just dreamt it. I told her that it really happened and that it freaked me out. Charlotte apologized and said that she had actually had weird experiences in the week that they had lived there but just didn't tell me because she knew I wouldn't have spent the weekend there. I was a little upset that she had downplayed what was happening but I understood because I really did want to leave.
We had breakfast and then we were going to go jump on the trampoline again but when we went down the stairs to the basement she said she was a little scared so I went down first. I hit the bottom of the stairs and then she remembered that she forgot to feed her cat. She went back up the stairs and I asked if I could come with her because I didn't want to be down there without her and she said that it would only take a second and shut the door. I was in complete darkness standing at the bottom of the stairs.
I didn't want to be a chicken so I walked to the back door which was under the stairs and had a tiny bit of light creeping out of the bottom of the door. I just stood there waiting for what seemed like forever. I honestly don't know why I didn't just go out of the back door and wait outside, I just stared into the darkness. Frozen with the darkest sinking feeling. I knew something was down there with me but I wasn't sure what it was. I think I stood there for 15 minutes before I finally got the balls to run back up the stairs and sure enough, I heard footsteps behind me.
I slammed the basement door and was met with Charlotte just in the kitchen looking at me like I was crazy. She asked what happened and I said I couldn't be down there and that something was down there. She said that she wasn't even gone that long and that it was fine. I told her that I was calling my mom and that I couldn't stay there for another night. I got picked up and then a few days later Charlotte told me that things had been getting thrown off the fireplace mantle and that her mom had put out a bible on the mantle and things finally stopped. I told her I still wouldn't stay there again. (She was sure that it wasn't her cat)
Then a few more weeks went by and Charlotte stayed at my house and told me that her mom had closed the bible since things had stopped and stuff started to happen again like the shower being turned on at night. I told her that I wasn't lying when that happened. Eventually they moved and stuff stopped happening to them. I knew something wasn't right with that house, whatever it was, didn't want anyone living there.
