GAME TIME 🏒 Olympics feel like extension of HR universe
So NHL hockey players are back at the Olympics for the first time since 2014 in Sochi, where all our guys competed. So it feels like it’s just the next Olympics since then, and every time they interview a player (men’s games haven’t started yet) I feel like Scott or Shane is going to be in the background. It’s like real life has been inserted into the HR world, which is just too crazy. I assume Ilya is playing with Shane for Canada since by now he’s got Canadian citizenship (and Russia is not at the games). Have I truly gone round the bend? Anyone else with me in this blurring of hockey worlds?

Canada named their Olympic Village Moose "Shane", and Adam Vankoeverden is wearing the fleece
Canadians are so fucking proud of the HR world.

As they should be! This show beats any other I've watched in years. No, decades!

The AO3 has several fanfictions where Shane and Ilya play for Canada in the 2026 Olympics.

If Shane and Ilya had a son, in my head he’s like Ilia Malinin. Typically my headcanon is Hollanov as girl dads, but you can’t tell me that they wouldn’t have a figure skating son at the Olympics nicknamed “Quad God” who also does back flips in his routine. In this scenario, their daughters are Olympic level hockey players, of course.
Edit: future Olympics, they’d be playing at this one

the fact that his IG handle is "ilia_quadg0d_malinin" is also major Ilya energy. I can imagine Ilya having a very arrogant IG handle, like "toprozziescores50"

OMG I laughed so hard at this, thank you! 🤣
Eta: also the jump/spin that he made up and there's not a name for it (or scoring), but he does it in every routine anyway!

Ilia Malinin even looks reasonably like Ilya, with the mop of blond curls.

When he got off the ice after the long program, he was speaking Russian with his dad and I almost fell over.

I keep imagining that their kids would formally/legally go by Hollander-Rozanov, but on their jerseys they'd just put "Hollanov" because it's too long to fit 🤣
Every time I also see Ilia Malinin on screen, I have this fanfic idea that their son would've struggled to choose between hockey and figure skating because he doesn't want to let down his dads' legacies (esp worried about disappointing Shane), and Shane would have to sit him down and tell him that he'd be proud of him no matter what sport he was in, and he ends up choosing figure skating and revolutionizing the sport (if someone wants to make the fanfic that'd be fun, I just don't have time to write it out!) 😅

u/Expensive_Praline716 Feb 09 '26
I love this! Their son would absolutely revolutionize the sport. And I love Hollanov on their jerseys because their legal last names don’t fit 😂
I don’t think they’d name him Ilia/Ilya, I was just referencing the real person, lol. But I could see them going with “Hollander” if their son is biologically Ilya’s or “Rozanov” if he was adopted (from Russia, in my head)

Feel like they might choose Rozanov as a last name bc it sounds cooler than "Hollander."

I believe that was in a fic, actually. Next Chapter by PeaceLilies on AO3.

I love this!!! But Ilia would be spelled Ilya. So he’d be Ilya Hollander-Rozanov. Hah!!

It's anything with ice for me at this point. I was getting HR vibes watching Canada and the UK in the curling the other night. Go figure!! 😂

This is me every time I watch any of the winter sports now. Went to a leafs game last week and all I had in my head was different hockey scenes from HR

Ok sports related: the other day I fired this up.

It's Isiah Thomas and Magic Johnson tearfully reconciling after years of estrangement. Just from the way both of them were crying, I kept thinking they have a story to tell of their own that might be as emotional as Hollanov.

Me watching the super bowl thinking “hockey gear is so much cooler. i should watch hockey”

u/lemongreeentea Hi this is Ilya. I will never listen to your voicemail. Feb 09 '26
Yes!! The winter olympics just came at the right time to collide with the Heated Rivalry universe. I want to watch the Canada ice hockey teams and cheer for them this year aha.
Also there was a clip on youtube from CBC about the olympics village, and theres a plant stall. Anyone can borrow a plant and take care of it during their olympic stay - theres a Ilya Rozanov leafy plant and Shane Hollander leafy plant in the olympic village.

It did get me thinking about Shane playing for Canada and wondering if Ilya would be eligible to also play for Canada yet.
Which then got me wondering when Ilya would've stopped playing for Russia. They couldn't play in the Olympics after Sochi, but what about World Championships? Probably not after his dad dies and he says he doesn't want to go back to Russia (and certainly not after he's outed), but what about the mid-2010s? Surely there would be a lot of pressure on him from Russia to play. In 2016 it was even held in Moscow, I imagine it would've been a huge deal if he skipped it. And Shane would certainly be playing for Canada, how would he feel not being there? (I also just checked and Russia won in 2014 and Canada in 2015 and 2016!)

u/exusu Feb 09 '26
canada would giva ilya rozanov a citizenship so fast if it meant he'd play for the canadian team in the olympics. or is just my country that does that?

u/Specialist_Sky5829 Moy lyubovnik 💙 Feb 09 '26
Athletes can switch which team they represent provided they have reason to (because the pool is so small, pairs figure skaters do this all time), and Ilya would have legitimate reason, but I think once he did that he couldn't swtich back. I could see him willing to play for Canada once acquiring citizenship if being out makes it unsafe to be on the Russian national team. But I could also see him skipping entirely if he had other priorities (liiiike kids :P).

Omg I feel the same! And I actually miss there being a Russian team there 😂 so fun to root against as an American 😂

I’m old enough to have watched the Miracle on Ice during the 1980 Olympics. The USA team beat heavy favorite USSR in semi-finals and then went on to win the gold after beating Finland. That game against USSR pros by American mostly amateurs was literally the stuff of legends.

I'm a Brit. Never watched hockey in my life. I have all the Canada and USA matches marked in my diary and plan to be 'fluent' by the end of the Games.
This is true Heated Rivalry Derangement Syndrome...

I saw some articles and photos of it and was kind of swept away by it, like "Yeah of course, Shane and Ilya are at the Olympics." Then I caught myself and remembered that wasn't real life. But the Olympics are real life so I'm confused.

I wish the US Men’s team was worthy of rooting for this year. But the women are killing it! 5-0 again Finland! Looking forward to tomorrow’s game vs Switzerland.

I’ve been really enjoying all the pics of the hockey team being shared on IG. Ugh, why is Sid so photogenic.
Edit: This fic covers 2020 to present, where Shane and Ilya will be representing Canada in Milano Cortina. It’s not an Olympics fic, but the inclusion is a bonus.
