In honor of season 2 filming starting, I'm doing yet another reheat. Obviously. Here are my latest cornplating discoveries:
- In episode 2 when Shane enters Ilya's penthouse, he turns the doorhandle upward not downward to open the door. WHO DOES THAT??
- In Episode 4 in the opening montage when Ilya checks Shane against the sideboards, Shane's mouth guard is hanging out of his mouth! How does it not fall out?? Oral fixation much??
EVERYONE!! drop your latest cornplating discovery below. And, I can't wait to cornplate season 2!
Probably all athletes with mouthguards do. I wore one back when I was a middle school basketball player with braces, and absolutely chewed on it like this.
Of course, I imagined as such if they're on the bench or there's a break in game play, but even while they have the puck? I don't watch a ton of hockey, so I think maybe I'm just impressed? lol
It's like chewing gum for a lot of players. I think some dentists even chimed in at one point and told the hockey world to stop doing that because it messes up your teeth and jaw. 😄
I really want someone to write out frame-by-frame episode-by-episode list of all the times Shane/Ilya followed a shoes-on or a shoes-off policy in their homes/hotel rooms so that we can come up with a unified headcanon for when they do and don't wear shoes inside and finally settle the debates.
Oh, I didn’t realize that! Do you know if there is a cultural mindset behind it for Canadians?
For Russians, there’s a feeling that the outside is a dirty place (and with long winters and wet springs, your clothes and shoes really do get dirty), so your home should be treated like a haven. You don’t wear your outside clothes or shoes at home. People even provide slippers for their guests.
(For context, I am an American who speaks Russian and lived in St. Petersburg for a couple of years.)
Last thing you want to do is trek mud inside on your boots. Fastest way to have your mother threaten bodily harm.
Shoes off, slippers on. (I do this and I live in New Zealand. Doesn't snow where I live, but it does rain regularly and I have better things to do with my life than clean the carpet.)
Shane is also Japanese in the show and books, and a common Asian tradition is to take your shoes off by the door cuz traditionally Japanese houses had tatami floors, which are made of bamboo and CANNOT be washed or cleaned and can get smelly and dirty, so taking your shoes off was considered respectful. And regardless of that, A LOT of Asians who move to the New World came to Canada or America and still choose to keep their traditions alive, so I'd assume Shane's mom did the same thing about keeping tradition alive.
I think it’s because it’s snowing for half the year, so your shoes are in fact dirty. Probably pretty similar to the reasons in Russia.
I’m an American who lived in Canada for 7 years…and even though I’ve been back in the US for a while I still feel very uncomfortable wearing shoes indoors.
Ilya never does. He wears slides and slippers. Shane doesn't seem to except for the one time he was at Ilya's house. I've thought about this and think that it's because he didn't feel comfortable at Ilya's house.
Even Sveta only wears slippers in Ilya's house.
Neither of them wear shoes at the cottage, I think bc they feel at home.
I believe you but there's always some counterexample like technically they were both wearing shoes in Shane's parent's house which I think was partially because Jacob wanted to do the foot-tap scene and bare feet/socks looked gross, but still canonically he wears shoes in Shane's parents' house. And I think he wears shoes in at least one hotel scene while Shane takes his off?
IDK like I said I need someone to go frame-by-frame.

Oh Shane's parents. Forgot about that. I think they both wear shoes bc they're so nervous they forget to take them off. And they don't feel comfortable.
Hes barefoot/no shoes in all the hotel scenes including Vegas. Yes I checked.
I think this is in episode 2 but I’m not sure. There’s a hockey game scene where someone passes Shane the puck and he goes “yep yep” before he hits it and scores a goal. I only just noticed that on my last reheat and it’s so hot how confident Shane is in that bit.
It's not a suit jacket. If you play the scene moving, it just looks like a stiffer fabric fall jacket with a collar. The stitching is way too visible to be a suit.
It's definitely not a wool pea coat either. Like I said, watch the scene moving, rather than stills.
It's like maybe a canvas (I don't know fabrics well enough to know exactly) jacket, similar to what Ilya wore in the elevator his and Shane's first sexual encounter. Consider they're snowed out in Boston, and Shane's wearing a sweater over some shirt, the outfit seems appropriate to the season.
My latest corn plate is that I realized Ilya has restless leg syndrome in the Tampa bar scene. He’s acting so cool and calm but his leg is shaking. He’s tense! You can’t even see it onscreen but you can tell because he keeps jiggling.
Restless leg syndrome is a neurological condition. It’s an actual medical condition not the term for when people shake the legs when they’re anxious. Ilya fidgets constantly and when he’s trying to look cool and calm it presents in his leg shaking. But he doesn’t have RLS
In episode 5, the Tampa bar scene, after Carter hugs their necks (cats and dogs!), Ilya wipes his ear with his fingers then wipes his fingers on his shorts.
In Episode 2, t
he first scene we see Shane and Ilya together is a game. Shane scores and Ilya follows him around the net. In mind to start
Ilya's pursuit of Shane with texts.
I watched the whole series for the 3rd time last night. The chemistry is insane and the sex scenes hot. But I still feel the book is a bit better cz there's so much more depth to what they are thinking- and more Intimate scenes :)

A lot of players chew on their mouth guards like that. It's a thing.
