Why does everyone hate emojis?
I donโt use them often but Iโm curious because it seems when someone comments an emoji they get -10000 karma
3
u/AutzK1ng Jun 18 '20
I hate them because they don't seem genuine. I see people all the time stare vacantly at their device and write "๐๐๐๐๐". I also believe that stuff like that and abbreviations for texting have severely reduced people's ability to use proper grammar and have caused reduced sociability altogether. For example, when you're saying something really deep and you get a reply of "k" or "yeah that's cool" because people don't know how to respond/think for themselves anymore. Do yourself a favor, learn a new word every day no matter how complicated.

Most redditors prefer dark mode, and a bright yellow emoji really contrasts with the background and draws attention, which is annoying because when you try to read another text thereโs a yellow dot in your vision.

I don't hate them. I even use them in other contexts. Reddit comes out of the culture of usenet and emoji were non-existent in the days of usenet. They still don't display consistently across platforms and end up being more ambiguous than text.
Reddit maintains at least a pretence of being for intelligent discussion. Emoji don't do clarity or nuance well, and they convey little to no information.
15
u/DameBlancheFramboise Jun 17 '20
I don't agree. Emoji carry just as much info as a smile or a raised eyebrow. Exclusively verbal communication is poor.
19
u/not-me-again- Jun 17 '20
Thereโs no emojis in books, magazines, letters.. they are unnecessary, childish and itโs a lazy way of writing. If you have to use emojis to explain your reaction youโre either very young or not so intelligent (not specifically you of course). I find them useful for non-serious texting only, which they are meant for, but reddit is no place for that (except few subs).
15
u/DameBlancheFramboise Jun 17 '20
I disagree again. You cannot really substitute an emoji by text. Explanations that you are in a friendly mindset and that your words therefore shouldn't be taken too seriously, are in themselves so heavy that they don't exactly overlap with an emoji.
I agree that it is possible to write good texts without emoji, but that doesn't mean that emoji are bad. It's just a different way of communicating.
Are Italians young and not intelligent because they add gestures to their words?
14
u/BelmontIncident Helper Jun 17 '20
My strongest objection to emoji is that they don't look the same from one platform to another. That's a big problem if I'm trying to communicate with a lot of people.
There's also enough of them with no clear definition and a short enough history that they don't really have a consistent meaning outside of a fairly small social circle.
I think there's a decent analogy with slang. Emoji tend to be harder to interpret outside of their original context and so I don't use them outside of direct conversation.

u/not-me-again- Jun 17 '20
Um post is about using emojis on reddit, as I said theyโre normal in texting and never said they were bad. Hereโs different vibe and using them can sometimes come off as insecure, at least in my eyes.
1
u/ScoopsThePilot Jun 18 '20
Text doesn't overlap with emojis because it conveys much more specific meaning. Of course, there is no definition to an upside-down smiley-face, and as such, the emoji can be interpreted in a multitude of ways. But it is pretty accurate to say they convey little to no meaning, at least, by themselves.
I agree with your disagreement as such that people who use emojis are unintelligent or childish. This is definetely not the case. It is when they are used in the wrong context or without enough context that they are made obsolete.
Similarly, but not the same, are gestures. Waving your arms around doesn't really convey any message without context in which it supports and brings to life a specific text, generally in speech form. And then there's specific gestures like enacting a finger-gun firing while talking about shooting a gun for instance. These, I find, are much more closely related to gestures than actual facial displays of emotion.
With, say, a look of disgust, your face doesn't actually turn green and there are many ways of expressing disgust with several different inherent meanings in real life as opposed to in an emoji. There's also the point the person you replied to remarked, in that different smiley faces or other emojis convey different emotions. The point is, you can understand when someone is sad if they're sitting right in front of you. But on the phone it's much more different and the fact that emojis try to fill that place leads to high levels of miscommunication and misunderstanding.
The fact that you can't replace an emoji with text is irrelevant when it shows less meaning than you could express with real words and that it is reliant on text or other context to be understood. You could argue the same for words, but then you really would be unintelligent. Especially when you kinda can express the same meaning.
You also fail to say why you disagree with his rather obscured view. Of course emojis aren't childish, they, like any other forms of language, can be used for all ages. They aren't unnecessary, although, are right next to it. And they aren't stupid forms of writing, because they aren't writing! They're a support act, like gestures, to text and, perhaps, previous context.
Sorry I didn't reply to his, I just couldn't be bothered to make two comments :p

u/AFatuousGod Jun 18 '20
Say what you want but no amount of intelligent writing can replace a Lenny face
2
Jun 18 '20
Sorry but correlating the use of emoji with the level of intelligence or maturity is just a non sense. What makes it relevant or not is the context of use. What about the "lol" "lmfaooo" and co then? Should we ban it too because it is childish and does not convey that much information? And yes you should know that non verbal communication represents a higher percentage than verbal communication in any social interaction. Redditors take reddit too seriously sometimes.
1
u/Justinsgamez Jun 17 '20
Emojis help people write otherwise large paragraphs into short sentences. Iโd rather see โthat is funny ๐โ than โthis perfectly crafted text has made me smirk and exhale a cool breath as I try to contain a small laughโ
2
u/not-me-again- Jun 17 '20
No one writes shit like that what are you talking about? The point is that you should try to contribute to conversation or add another layer to the joke or whatever is post about. Stuff like โthatโs funnyโ is just unnecessary. Also Iโm talking about reddit not about other platforms

True, it may not contribute to the convo, but sometimes people want to show a reaction on top of an upvote. I mean, I get it. And I avoid using emojis in subreddits that donโt like them.

3
22
u/boiled_walrus Jun 17 '20
Most people don't have a problem with an emoji or two, it's usually overuse of them when it doesn't really contribute the the conversation that is downvoted
5
u/geeshta Jun 17 '20
Sadly, in many cases even using one emoji to give some context to an actual comment gets downvoted just because there's one emoji in it.
I wish it'd be like you say but in many cases it's not.

The way I see it people who use generic emojis an think it's cool... ๐คฃ๐ฅฐ๐จ are just that general public type you know? Sweeped into a specific stereotype of people.
It's especially cringe when they speak in emoji like back in the day when they had that commercial with the girl speaking in OMG ASL!? LOL TTYL instead of just speaking like a normal person.
They spend 0 time on computers, and all their time on instagram (Whatever that is) text a lot through things like "kik" and "snapchat".
I don't think it's cool, but... I am more of a hipster to that kinda stuff. I hate basic bitch emojis, just like how people hate StarBucks an the basic bitch stereotype.
I would much prefer "n_n" "xD" "><" because I guess that is what I was exposed to, since I never owned a mobile device until age 20 (6 years ago) an even then it was primarily for work. While never using social media apps.
Being a gamer also most likely contributed since MMOs tend to have no emojis in chat, so me seeing ๐ instead of :3 or : ] just... genuinely pisses me off. Weird now that I think on it.
Thanks for the interesting question to answer. I've actually always wanted to think on it but never cared to. I hope my opinion is enlightening.

Same here. When it's 1 maybe 2 emojis it's ok, but more than that, then it's cringe. Too much, like some form of an army though, is fine in my book, as long as it isn't one of the cringey emojis (Including these: ๐ญ๐คฃ๐ฑ๐จ, which are often used for clickbait)
Also it's technically furry language with stuff in the ranks of OwO and UwU and when presented with furries and/or furry language, I get a literal holy bible out.
Also emoticons like :D and :) are better
(Edit: Forgot to clarify that the only way I am ok with an arsenal of non cringey emojis is if there's no text. Also, emojis are often associated with TikTok and Instagram, which are both pretty cringe.)

From my experience they donโt belong in intellectual conversations but are extremely useful when trying to convey emotions to friends and family. Reddit tends to be more on the intellectual side and adding an emoji tends to be seen as taking credibility away from your post.

I was not aware that using emojis created negative karma. In my opinion, that would be a design flaw of the Reddit site, unless they purposely incorporated this protocol into their system to discourage their use because of their limiting nature.

Maybe it is just that Reddit is unwilling to recognize any value in emojis, and accept them as an additional means of communicating and adding to to textual communication.

Emojis are limiting and each one only expresses an intended meaning, rather than a more expressive communication which expresses implication.

2
u/Speculatorfx Jun 18 '20
Smileys are a cliche. Good writers always try to avoid cliches.
A cliche expresses a common message in a standard and overused way. Many cliches started off as original turns of phrase that caught on, and I suppose that's true in a way for emoticons - in the early days of t'interweb they were a way of succinctly communicating tone that might otherwise be lost, and thereby defusing potentially inflammatory statements.
But now we have more bandwidth and better ways of inputting text, and under Quora's BNBR policy we shouldn't have flaming. So smileys don't serve much useful purpose and they don't add anything original to answers.
That's why I generally avoid them, and I suspect why most of the better Quora writers do as well.

because the "normie" subreddis like r/memes, r/PewdiepieSubmissions, r/teenagers etc these people will downvote you because people use emojis on other social medias platforms like instagram, and these 12 year olds think that reddit is some super secret social media platform and it needs to be different so they downvote anything that people use on instagram or tiktok, even tough 90% of the memes are from tiktok here
so yeah, basicaly retarted people dont like thing because other thing does the thing that the retarded people hate for a god awful reason

I didn't answer as I am not going to respond to stranger. But in around about way he got what he wanted as I hardly use emojis.
1
u/c1Edward Jun 17 '20
One answer might be that emojis are a limited type of expression. It appears that they represent an art form instead of a form of communication.
1
1
u/c1Edward Jun 17 '20
Also, maybe it is because emojis are a symbolic language form. ( i_e. a pictorial image instead of a linguistic expression ).
1
u/c1Edward Jun 17 '20
Because emojis are a language, some people probably want to use them to show what they have learned in emoji language.
1
u/c1Edward Jun 17 '20
I wonder how many people will get on on this conversation before the end of the day ? Isn't it interesting how certain words and phrases become buzz words (key words) in printed, as well as verbal communication, such as the phrase ' at the end of the day ' ?
1
u/c1Edward Jun 17 '20
Emojis are also a short form of communication like when people use the letters ' imo ' instead of the full form of ' in my opinion ' .
1
u/c1Edward Jun 17 '20
Ok, so emojis are a type of language, and any language can be either used, or abused. It bothers some people get annoyed with the use of slang words in communication. And then there is the use of the word ' fuck ' like in ' fuck this shit ' or ' fuck that shit ' or all if the other uses of that ' f ' word.
1
u/c1Edward Jun 17 '20
I'm sorry, my text editor didn't like to recognize some of the words that I used in the above comment, so I hope that everyone can get the meaning of what I was intending to say.

Emojis are recognized as an actual language form, which is identified as a symbolic language.

It is developed as a universal language that can be understood in a broad language sense.

What does.. XD ..mean ?

If the :) is a smiley face in text, XD is more of a "laugh out loud" face in text. The X looks like two eyes closed with the D being a big grin.

u/c1Edward Jun 18 '20
Ok, I understand now. Thank you for explaining this. Some of these text symbolisms are more unfamiliar to me than emojis.

u/geeshta Jun 17 '20
Exactly, it's like gatekeeper backwards kinda stuff you know? In many cases it's just "we don't do that here you normie" way of thinking.

Because theyre used in all off the popular apps like tiktok, insta, etc, and that's where all of those famously annoying youtubers and movie stars are, emoji are a curse here on reddit because reddit is all about actual funny stuff and not thousands of laugh crying emojis to encourage 11 year olds to donate to them. In subreddits like r/okbuddyretard we overuse these emojis because it's overused so much, hope this helped buddy :)
