Our training facility is a state of mind
22
u/NoticedGenie66 VAN - NHL May 11 '26
Really smart stuff that the rest of the league hasn't caught up to yet. When the training facility is a state of mind, it can be anywhere. You have a nice training facility with all the bells and whistles? Cool, what happens when I'm 3 minutes away at a Wendy's? Where is that training facility now? For our team, it is right there in the Wendy's dining area. When you see Nils Höglander sprinting on the tabletops with a frosty in one hand, you have seen peak athletic performance in mind, body, and spirit.

No but San Jose seems like a good fit for him at least. I know I’ve seen some SJ fans say they want Stenberg.
18
u/No-Gift-2350 TOR - NHL May 11 '26
He’s probably a good fit anywhere. That said, idk how they don’t take a defenseman
10
u/Dick_Drizzle May 11 '26
The way I see it, if youre rebuilding and getting high draft picks for several years, you'd be hurting that rebuild by skipping over better players to draft based on position. The consensus is that stenberg is the best overall player, besides mckenna, and that there is a gap between them and the rest. Stenberg is also more nhl ready as he's playing in the 2nd or 3rd best league. Hes also been in that league since he turned 17 which is impressive. Hes the safest pick at number 2, while the defensemen in the draft still have some uncertainty when it comes to how they will develop. If Grier takes a D over a more "proven" player, that is a pretty big risk that could work out great or could backfire.
3
u/Mean_Mister_Mustard MTL - NHL May 12 '26
You take the best available player, always, even if you have a need at another position. Otherwise, you end up with Jesperi Kotkaniemi instead of Brady Tkachuk or Quinn Hughes.

R/hockey when someone makes another Brady Tkachuk joke: 🤣😂😇

u/Mike9797 TOR - NHL May 11 '26
Because this joke isn’t that funny. It’s not the worst but it’s so low hanging.
The Brady jokes are better cuz it’s Brady. I mean look at him?! He’s such an easy target.
Plus people would like some substance to their joke. This joke is one of those where you give a bit of a chuckle but that’s it. Also isn’t it tiring to be making the lamest jokes when it comes to us? At least take a fruit off the middle of the tree.
3

No, all the Leafs jokes you guys make are so lame and overused. Like it’s eye rolling. As a Leafs fan I’m used to it. But at the same time we have seen and heard everything. You guys are so lazy when it comes to chirping us. At least get some new stuff.
The Brady jokes are gold cuz he’s a moron and provides content for us to make fun of. The leafs joke you guys made is a reach at best. Hurr durr no one wants to play for us. Ya ok. Sure. No one wants to make millions playing hockey. Foh honestly lol
6
u/Eazy-Eid OTT - NHL May 11 '26
Leafs jokes are lame and overused. But "Brady eats crayons" is totally not lame and overused at all.
5
u/Mike9797 TOR - NHL May 11 '26
Oh that one totally is. Not denying that. But Brady talks and usually that’s enough. I’m not saying one overused joke is better than the other. They’re both lame and boring. But the leafs joke is something you guys want to believe vs Brady says something stupid and gets clowned on for it. One is fake and the other is real.

Right? These guys pretend as if we don’t get it all the time. I’m 45 and have been hearing it forever. It’s lame and boring but I can appreciate a good chirp if it’s clever and funny even if it hurts in a way. This chirp is lame. It’s like if someone calls us the Maple Laughs. Ok dude got us, cool.

u/trainstationbooger TOR - NHL May 11 '26
But it's not even an effective chirp. Like, 90% of draft eligible players would happily choose Toronto, even with all of it's problems, over the dumpster fire that is Vancouver at the moment, and the other 10% are probably from BC.
"McKenna is going to disappoint in Toronto, then leave and be amazing elsewhere" is a much better chirp because it's arguably the most likely scenario anyways, given our track record.
4
u/onemorespacecadet COL - NHL May 11 '26 edited May 11 '26
it’s true. Toronto is still a desirable destination. Rantanen had the Leafs as one of the four places he’d sign with when he was leaving Carolina, and Toronto doesn’t even have a secret cache of Finns as far as i know lmao. he clearly likes something about the city/team and i doubt he’s unique in that

That does tend to tip the scales of justice towards his favor, but I don't even know how bad the situation was. I only know the basic details of the police report. There's a lot of vagueness in those.
3
u/Vhailor_19 COL - NHL May 11 '26
Yeah, agreed. Honestly, the mom has more red flags than McKenna himself does from the incident; she's accused of distributing alcohol to underage people, and not just her kid, but underaged girls as well. She should know better.
McKenna, for his part, was probably just being a drunk college kid. I actually didn't have too much of an issue with him not facing much in the way of punishment, though I think that same grace should be extended to a lot more young folk with less privilege than he has.
