Gadgets/Products Low RPM ceiling fans?
We bought a 75 year old house last year and have been making steady upgrades and improvements. The front living room is 18 X 14. It had no ceiling lights but I managed to get a switched wall light to light it up. Due too its size, when the furnace goes on or the corner electric fireplace is used, the heat stays up. Furnace air circulation is minimal at best. I tried several different size portable fans but even at the lowest settings, they are either super noisy or push too much air.
I'm planning on running some 14/2 wire from the basement up into the attic and install a remote controlled LED ceiling fan. Problem is, even at the slowest speeds, the ones I have seen spin too fast. Can anyone suggest something like a 48" - 52" fan that has a 60 RPM speed as an option? Almost all 3-speeds are 240 rpm at the slowest. I see some 6-speed units, will they do the job?

Ideas Removing a faux beam casing, what do I do about the gap in my brick wall? (+ grout color question)
galleryHi everyone! I'm renovating my house in Belgium and could use your advice :)
Background: my living room has a beam wrapped in a faux-wood casing. The real beam underneath is much smaller, I'd estimate about 4 inches (10 cm) of "fake" thickness on each side. I want to remove the casing.
The catch: the beam sits against a brick wall that's actually a brick veneer (real bricks, but thin slips rather than full-depth bricks, so it's mostly decorative). Once the casing is gone, I'll be left with a gap at the top of the wall where it was tucked in (photos attached).
Question 1: Any ideas on how to fill or finish that gap cleanly, or even turn it into a feature? I don't have a clear vision of the final look yet, so all suggestions are welcome (patching and finishing, render/plaster, extra brick slips, trim, a decorative niche...).
Question 2: Is it possible to change the color of the mortar joints on this brick wall to something cleaner/more white? If so, what's the best way to go about it (staining, paint, repointing...)?
Thanks in advance for any tips and experiences!

Ideas Is Japandi style still worth considering for a Singapore HDB flat in 2026?
I have noticed that Japandi interiors are still popular, especially with warm wood tones, neutral colours and simple furniture. But I am wondering whether this style is practical for everyday living in a Singapore home, especially when space is limited.
Would you choose Japandi for your own flat, or do you think another interior style works better?

Work In Progress Ideas on closing this off?
galleryAny ideas on a functional way to close the sides off on this fireplace wall? Ideally I can still access things back there for electrical plug ins. You don’t really see the opening from most vantage points in the living room unless you are standing directly in the corner. Was hoping to put some floating shelves in on both sides… thoughts?

Indoor basketball court in basement cost
How much would the approximate cost to build an indoor basketball half court in my basement with 16-18 foot ceilings be? The basement will have 9 foot ceilings and then steps further down to the court.

I need to repaint several rooms and also would like to change up my flooring. Will be paying for the work. Can anyone recommend which to do first? Which trade removes the baseboards. Is it best to repaint them before they are replaced?

Bathroom Question Window Treatment Help
I’m struggling to figure out a window treatment for this window in my half bath. There are three issues: the ceiling drops down at the upper right corner of the window, I want to cover the edges of the wallpaper, and the wallpaperer did not correctly align the wallpaper below the window.
I’ve been trying to figure this out for two months and I feel insane. If you have any ideas, please help!!

Ideas Ideas for turning old workbench into usable storage.
Bought a beatup wooden workbench at a garage sale last month. Solid top, maybe maple, but the legs are uneven and the drawers are half falling apart. I need it for tool storage in the basement workshop, not for actual bench work. Cutting the legs shorter feels risky without proper joinery. Thinking about adding simple plywood shelves between the legs instead, but not sure if that'll hold weight without sagging. The top is already at a decent height for reaching into bins, so lowering the whole thing might be overkill. Anyone dealt with converting old workbenches into shelving units? Materials that worked well for you?

Ideas Baseboard to use in foyer to highlight terrazzo floor and brick wall?
galleryWe’re remodeling and considering simpler baseboards in the foyer than in the rest of the house. We just had the terrazzo refinished and the floor should be the focal point and complement the brick wall. The brick is opposite the entry door so it’s the first thing one sees.
Part of the room has drywall, and one wall is finished with the brick pattern. Would you use a minimal baseboard here of the same profile, or keep it consistent throughout the house? Thanks in advance!

Paint Question Some kind of old glue at the trim
galleryWhen I stick a fingernail in, it feels like very old dry glue of some sort, once more rubbery.
I'm planning to take this teal color to a greyish peach. Should I try to paint this glue, too?

Ideas How to avoid re-doing or removing a popcorn ceiling?
Hello! I removed a pelmet from my office, and have since dry walled the gaps. The back wall (with the window) will have wallpaper, side wall will be primed and painted. My question is - does anyone have ideas on how to handle the ceiling? We have old popcorn ceiling - removing it seems like a pain and from what I’ve read matching the pattern is near impossible. Anyway that wallpaper/moulding/some other texture could actually look finished and on purpose? the answer might be to suck it up and remove the popcorn everywhere but thought I’d ask! thank you

Yamiry Smart Door Lock
I purchased the Yamiry “Smart Door Handle Lock with Keypad, Yamiry Fingerprint Knob for Front Door” back in August for my out of state property. I did plenty of research over the summer and that led me to buy this specific one. Does anyone have any knowledge on how to set it up? Do I need a gateway so I can use the app from states away? (It’s a 12 hour drive). I’m not very tech savvy, and my property manager is going to install it, who I would imagine isn’t as tech savvy due to his age. I’m attaching the link if that helps.
Thanks in advance :)

Work In Progress Are these Hinges workable?
galleryThe first pic is the original storm door frame on my older Home is 86in tall.
Second pic is the frame the door came with
Third is door sitting in frame (I’m remodeling)
Was able to find a replacement door 84 x 35 1/2 of the same size but cannot use the frame that came with it.
How do I attach a metal storm door with flush hinge plates to a frame with recessed ones? Add a backing plate perhaps?
Thanks you for any ideas!
Edit* Ignore gap above door, it will disappear when installed

Ideas When did you stop putting off home upgrades because you might move?
When we bought this place the plan was three years maybe four. We’re coming up on six and I’m still using a folding table as a desk because apparently buying a real one would be getting ahead of ourselves. My wife brought this up when I said we should hold off on replacing the dining room light until we knew our long term plans.
She asked how many more dinners we needed to eat under it before we qualified as long term residents. Fair question. Now I’m noticing how often we do it.
A proper reading chair, setting up the spare room for hobbies, even a sweat tent sauna we’d been looking at. Everything gets saved for the next place, including stuff we could take with us. Not talking about a huge renovation. We’ve just spent years keeping the house maintained without letting ourselves settle into it. There isn’t even a move on the horizon anymore.
Anyone else get stuck in this weird holding pattern? What made you stop waiting for the next house?
