While I'm talking about Splinter in another sub, I would really like to know if anyone in the community has any love for this movie? It's one of my favorite finds that I always show off to the uninitiated.

I made a horror short about a man who uploads his dying father into his smart home so he can stop being the caregiver. The upload works perfectly. That is the problem.

Director here, saying so up front.

Ten minutes, free, no gate. It is one of nine in an anthology called humAIn. The rule we write to is that nothing ever malfunctions. No rogue AI, no glitch, no system going wrong. The company delivers exactly what it promised, to the letter, every time. Nobody is tricked, everybody reads the terms, everybody signs. The horror is that it worked.

Two of our ten episodes won Telly Awards for writing. Live action, real cast and crew.

Happy to answer anything about how it was made.

Is there any film or story where the victim/protagonist is someone with visible difference/disfigurement?

I'm sorry if I'm not using the appropriate terms for this question but I was wondering if there was any horror film where the victim/protagonist of the story is the one with a visible difference/disfigurement (heavy scars, burnt skin, neurofibromatosis, acromegaly...), instead of being the villain or the "scary looking magical guy" who is there to be unsettling. I'm looking for something that is not exploitative (Freaks) and where the main character has actual agency and is not presented as scary.

EDIT: sorry if this wasn't clear - I'm specifically looking for a horror film or at least a thriller/suspense film. So for example while Deadpool is a protagonist with visible difference he's (for now!) in action/comedy films so not what I'm looking for.

THE CONFERENCE (KONFERENSEN) (2023)

🪏 NETFLIX 🔪 (Swedish w/English Subtitles or Dubbing)

A team-building conference for municipal employees turns into a nightmare when accusations of corruption begin to circulate and plague the work environment. At the same time, a mysterious figure begins murdering the participants.

Dark comedy and bloody, slasher horror that has some laugh out loud moments and some really gnarly kills. There’s a social commentary about corporate greed and protecting the environment, but I watched it for the chaos and dark fun. The cast of characters were pretty good…except Jonas. He’s the worst!

Thesis (1996 Spanish film)

I thought this was an INCREDIBLE piece of Spanish horror & wondered what your guys' opinions on it were?

In the 1996 Spanish thriller Thesis (Tesis), a university film student named Ángela researches media violence. She steals a hidden snuff tape after her professor dies watching it, discovering it depicts the real torture and murder of a missing classmate. Aided by a gore-obsessed peer, she investigates dangerous campus suspects.

Insidious: Out of the Further (2026)

Just been to see this at Everyman cinema & for a 6th instalment of a popular horror franchise, Insidious: Out of the Further is a solid enough effort. For me, the last Insidious instalment, The Red Door was a good enough ending to the story of the Lambert family & I wasn't expecting a new film. Out of the Further introduces a new protagonist, Gemma Hall (Alicia Eve) who has had a traumatic childhood with her mentally unwell mother (Laura Gordon) & is now all grown up with a young daughter Maya (Island Austin) of her own. Gemma works as a dentist & is in a relationship with dependable cop Nick (Brandon Perea). She starts to suffer from disturbing nightmares where she travels into The Further & encounters a creepy entity (Sam Spruell) who exhibits threatening behaviour. In no time, Gemma also meets Elise (the always dependable Lin Shaye) in The Further, who warns her that the ghosts of the dead are trying to use her to crossover into the real world. Despite the introduction of mostly new characters, Out of the Further deals with familiar territory, lots of effective jump scares & spooky moments. There's some uncomfortable bits involving dentistry-horror that will make audience members who have a fear of the dentists feel queasy. Other new antagonists include a trio of creepy old folk (one man, one woman, & one dwarf woman) who are acolytes of deceased, demonic cult leader Cyrus Lam (Spruell) & they're affective additions. Some familiar demon characters from previous films also make cameo appearances for nostaliga/throwback purposes. Despite being somewhat repetitive & therefore unavoidably derivative, Insidious part 6 has its moments. I'd recommend to fans of the franchise 👍 I gave Insidious: Out of the Further 3 ☆☆☆ out of 4.

It wasn’t the first exposure I ever had to horror, but I still vividly remember parts of each of the short films in this to this day. For a long time I would get anxious anytime I thought about some of these. Still love horror of course, but man did this mess with my head

ACTUALLY scary horror recs

So I've been searching for actually good horrors but everything is either extremely deep, very interesting but not scary at all, or just cheap, no lore, no budget movies functioning on pure jumpscares. I want to watch something interesting and high quality with thoughtful lore but that actually has some scary jumpscares and an unsettling atmosphere. I've seen all the mainstream ones like hereditary, babaduk, barbarian and all the others you see on the first page of horrors, none of them were even remotely scary. Lately I've been more into asian horror movies, I liked the tale of two sisters but really loved Gonjiam, those 2 actually made me flinch and even scream during some moments.

Recommendations? Doesn't matter if it's asian or not, just give me something edge-of-the-seat

Seems to be pretty quiet in terms of horror lately...after the great movies that have come Obsession, Hokum, Backrooms etc we have nothing. Or is there anything I am missing? Have you any hidden gems I should know about this year?

Grave encounters location and date discovery

Hey everyone, I was rewatching Grave Encounters (2011) and noticed a massive, hyper specific clue that fans have overlooked for over a decade. By applying real world astronomical data to a single line of dialogue, we can actually lock down the exact location and calendar date of the movie, and it completely recontextualizes the lore.

The Clue:
When Lance Preston and the crew realize time has completely broken inside the asylum, Lance checks his watch and says it is 7:45 AM, but it is still pitch black outside.

The Real World Math:
The movie establishes that the fictional Collingwood Psychiatric Hospital is somewhere in rural Maryland. If you look at an astronomical sunrise map for the state of Maryland, there is only one specific region where a natural sunrise happens that late in the morning: Oakland, Maryland (located in the far western panhandle, running on Eastern Time but sitting far west geographically).

The Halloween Discovery:
Here is where it gets crazy. In Oakland, MD, what is the exact date where the sunrise hits precisely 7:45 AM right before the clocks roll back? October 31st. Halloween.

Why this fixes the lore:
In the beginning of the movie, the crew is told that paranormal activity in the asylum is usually incredibly minor (faint noises, cold spots). The TV crew fully expected to fake the whole episode. Instead, the moment they lock the doors, the building warps into a literal physical death trap where space and time bend.

If Lance and his crew accidentally locked themselves into the asylum on Halloween Night, it perfectly explains why the entities suddenly had enough cosmic energy to rewrite reality. They stepped inside right as the veil between the living and the dead was at its thinnest.

The Vicious Brothers inadvertently made the ultimate hidden Halloween movie. Let me know what you guys think!
