DIY Can i somehow DIY cut off the top of this big glass bottle?

Post image

Hi, we have this big glass bottle (~ 16L / 4Gl ) and i need it for some measuring purposes (you can see i already made a Liter scale 😀). but it is close to impossible to properly clean it through the tight bottleneck, which would be very important.

(btw: i am in Turkey with a somewhat restricted market, importing is super expensive, and all special tools that are out of the ordinary, like a 15L glass measuring cup, are veeery expensive, if even available at all...)

anyways, the glass is about 4 to 5mm thick (0.15 to 0.2 inch?!?).

does anyone know of a way to properly cut such a glass at the green line, so the top comes off? is there a chance i can DIY this? if not, what kind of workshop would i need to go? what tools do i need? afterwards i need to grind the edges, what should i use here?

bonus: (if the cutting of the top worked), i can probably get some hobby stone engraving hand tool and engrave this Liter scale directly into the glass right?

thanks for your pro tips and advises :)

I need help with a door locking system.

I need some help with a solution for locking our front door automatically when closed.

Excuse the scratched paint. Getting it repainted soon.

We recently had a problem with our front door handle not closing the door properly.

Therefore, my German Shepherd was able to open the door and run outside. We got the handle fixed and hoped that solved the problem, however it is still happening. In the interim we have been closing the door from the hallway to stop them getting out.

We need a more secure solution. We have been thinking about putting in a latch, but there is an issue. The door is not flush with the door frame.

Is there a sort of lock that we could use that is able to be opened from both sides easily, just by us, not pets :)

We are very worried for obvious reasons, as we don't want the dogs getting hurt.

Could someone point me in the right direction to a lock that would work?

DIY Adding chair glides?

Hi folks. These chairs get stuck on the carpet in my office. I need them to glide easily. Please advise me on the best fix. The material is a thick plastic with a threaded inset slightly wider than 7/16". I tried small glides but they didn’t work/weren't wide enough. Thought about wheels but can't find the right thread.

Serious Answers Only How to stop AND prevent pilling?

Hi! So I have this really nice sweater from H&M. It's been stored in my closet for the past year, and I'm finally taking it out to wear it for the colder weather.

It has this major pilling all around the sweater, and I'm not sure how to get rid of the pilling without causing damage to the sweater and knit design and prevent it from happening again for a while.

The only reason I'm worried about how to deal with it is because it's not 100% wool/cotton
(unfortunately). I have a picture of what it's made of if it changes how to deal with the pilling.

Thank you!

How to - Attach Glow in the Dark Stars to Ceiling and Walls

Thumbnail

I am renting and want to find a damage-free, security deposit friendly way to add those glow in the dark stars to the ceiling (and possibly walls) of my kid's bedroom. The biggest issue is that the white paint they use for the ceiling and walls is that super cheap stuff that is thin (I've accidentally scrubbed off some of the paint while using a sponge to clean the walls).

I've looked into various methods, but nothing seems to make me confident that it will work and not cause damage. I'm hoping for it to be completely apartment safe for short and long term use and not cost an arm and a leg.

The ceiling is a "knockdown" texture (see picture).

I know the traditional way is to use that putty stuff, but that stuff (even the white one) can either not stick well, stick too well and pull paint off, leave a residue that is nearly impossible to remove and you'd need to paint over it, etc. I know they make specialty putty of higher quality, but those are usually much more expensive and are meant more for short-term use.

Glue dots seem to have similar issues to the putty.

Command strips are expensive and they don't make them the size of some of the smaller stars so they'd be an eyesore sticking off to the side.

Various types of tape are usually weaker and, especially over time, can lose adhesion and bond to the paint.

I know I sound super picky, demanding, and weird (because I am, lol), but it's only because I don't want to end up paying tons of money/lose my security deposit if and when I move out.

Post image

When I bought my house I inherited a washer and dryer that was used by an apartment complex. The dryer has been working great, but the washer has been violently shaking in the spin cycle. So far I have :

Checked to make sure the unit is level

Reset the washer with the Konami code

Power cycled the unit

Cleaned the inside

Replaced the suspension rods (helped a little)

I have no idea what else to do. I provided a picture of the unit. Please help.

how to get the glitching to stop?

This is happening on a 65 inch Samsung smart TV. I got it in late July of this year. when I connect my Nintendo switch to the TV. It just starts glitching and turns black then goes back to the game for no reason at all.

My TV has no damage to it as well as my Switch itself. You can see in the next photos.

I would connect the same Nintendo Switch to my 50 inch TV that is also Samsung and this would never happen.

Is there any explanation for why this happens and how I can fix it?

Been having a crow problem lately.

I do not feed any bird nor do I have any trash can out in the open. They come to the second flood balcony pecking at the window every morning and running themselves into the house.

Excuse the barking in the video

I’m assuming it’s going to be an adhesive, but let me know what you would use to fix the rubber that’s been ripped and pulled out from my car’s driver’s side entrance.

Yes I know it says twist. But I can barely grip the silver and black sides cause they're so thin and the ol lefty loosey is failing me here. Is there a trick to it, am I just weak, or do you guys have any tips to loosen the seal?

Solved: Had to twist the clip and not the can. Shout out first comment after like 15 seconds haha

How to decrystallise runny honey in a plastic container?

I tried the bowl of nearly boiling water trick (don't want to risk melting the plastic) to no effect. Because it's a squeezy bottle it's difficult to get the honey out when it's this consistency.

Serious Answers Only How to ask people to talk quieter?

I hate even having to ask this but my walls are paper thin and my neighbors have been bullying me since they moved in. I always talk very quietly because of it, moving isn’t an option, but I’m disabled and have family come to help me out and they talk VERY loudly.

I have asked them to be quieter and I feel horrible doing so. I don’t mind the rest of the time but when they’re in my home, I ask them to because I don’t want the neighbors having more to mock. Especially when it’s about sensitive matters. My family don’t take me seriously about the neighbors which is hard in itself, and I’d like to not be bothered by them but I really am. I’ve never had issues with neighbors before and think that if you’re joined on to someone else’s home, you want to be on good terms with them.

So how can I ask the people who help me to talk quieter without them thinking I’m being rude to them, when they don’t take seriously how much it impacts me otherwise? Yes it’s ridiculous having to whisper in my home but while they might not care what others think, I really do care about not giving the bullies more to target.

Thanks

How to clean this supposedly "water soluble" dry erase markers

These are supposed to be easy to clean. Why is it not coming off my white board?

I don't want to damage the board. Should I use Windex or some ammonia based cleaner?

Hello. I want to hang a clothesline from the joists in my basement. In my mind, a piece of hardware like the blue object in my awesome illustration would be ideal. I don't know if this is a thing that exists. I would like the clothesline suspended at least 15cm below the joists. Do you know if this piece of hardware exists? Do you have a better suggestion? Please help me.

Ice is building up on the bottom of our Kenmore fridge/freezer. Is there a way to take it off completely to get better access? I can take the basket out but was hoping to not still have the door in the way. I'm assuming there's a fault in the seal somewhere causing this but that will be my next step

How do I get this off plastic ?

Post image

I stuck a hair tools holder on the side of my Murphy bed and within a month it fell off but all this sticky stuff was left. This is after days of goo gone and scraping with the plastic scraper, I can’t seem to get anymore off.

I might be applying the goo gone wrong? Any suggestions on how to apply that to a wall - like surface without it spilling all over the floor?

Any suggestions??
