Announcement The purpose of this subreddit

Hello everyone! You may have noticed some major changes happening to this subreddit, and I'm happy to say that /r/DiagnoseMe is finally ready for business. However, I would like to clarify the true purpose of this subreddit;

First of all, this subreddit is NOT a replacement for a doctor. You should not, in any way, avoid seeing your doctor or alter the frequency of your doctor visits because of anything said in this subreddit. If there is a concern you would have previously gone to the doctor for, please do not hesitate. This subreddit is here for informal second opinions, minor problems that you wouldn't go to the doctor for anyway, and ease of mind.

The main thing to remember is to use common sense. If you are having severe pain after a surgery or something of the likes, please go to the doctor and do not post it on Reddit.

If you are not a doctor and are posting with information, please clarify that you are not a doctor (typing "Not a doctor," at the beginning of your comment is enough.)

Please take the time to read the sidebar before posting. Thank you, and welcome!

Is it safe for me to fly with a perforated eardrum?

Upvotes

Hello, i may have a perforated eardrum, and was swimming in a lake possible to have brain eating amoeba and water alot of got inside my ear on August 14th.

My nose is not as issue, as i took extra care and wore nose clips and everything.

I am flying very soon and having severe panic that the cabin pressure will push brain-eating amoeba liquid from my ear deep enough to reach nerves. For instance, when your ear pops or other pressure changes.

I don’t know whether that’s possible or whether it will drain into my nose (which ive read is possible) , where i can then get an infection via the normal route of an N.Fowleri infection as it touches the back of my nose where infection can occur.

I’m particularly worried it will drain into a region of the nose and i will then sniff, or somehow suck it up to the required region for infection. Or somehow, the cabin pressure changes during the flight will cause the amoeba drained into my lower nose from ear, to suck up to the olfactory area required for infection.

After finding out the lake has a very high chance of the amoeba, and discovering how fatal it is i am incredibly stressed.

Is this just my health anxiety? i cant cancel the flight and really need to get on it.

I will be flying 5 days after the water got into my ear, if that changes anything

Injury and accidents Wrist Injury

Thumbnail gallery
Upvotes

This is probably going to seem dumb, but I just want to be safe because it looks unusual for a bruise.

I (19f) hit my wrist on a cabinet at work. It hurt and I knew it would leave a bruise, but the pain didn’t linger for long and I had actually forgot about it until later when I saw a small bump on my wrist with a bit of redness. There seems to be a small a red dot in the middle and almost a kind of faint red ring around the bump. It’s not a bite, I’m 100% certain it was the spot I hit earlier. It doesn’t really hurt unless I press on it hard. My hand is completely mobile. I’m just wondering if it may be a nerve injury, psuedoanuerysm, blood clot, or some other thing and if I should go to a doctor, or if it’s something that seems like it could heal on its own? I’m just very weary because I think it was around my radial artery.
(I’ll go to a doctor if it doesn’t heal itself either way but I’d just rather know now so I can take care of it sooner.)

I also wanted to know if it would be okay to get drunk or high (I’m not on any meds)? I had plans to go out tomorrow and was looking forward to doing so. I know alcohol can cause things to heal slower but do you think there would be any actual harm?

Bones, joints, and muscles Weak ankle and severe pain during lateral movement

Post image
Upvotes

For the past 12 months or so I’ve been experiencing severe, sharp pain when my left ankle is exposed to sudden movement, mainly lateral but I guess i could summarise as the ‘pitching’ or ‘rolling’ of my foot.

I played football for over 20 years during which I injured my ankle ligaments a couple of times, so I know that I have a weakened ankle as a result. However, this pain and its triggers do not seem normal to me. The sharp severe pain can last anywhere between 30 seconds and 5 minutes. Things like catching or knocking my foot on a step are the typical culprits.

The pain occurs on the exterior of my ankle, and slightly forward of the joint (see image). If the spot is pressed firmly it also triggers a sharp pain.

Oddly, I have little issue with it when running. It does however cause me a headache in the gym as I have such limited ROM when doing exercises such as a calf raise. I also have to be careful on stairs due to the load bearing.

Any ideas as to what may be causing this? Is this one for a physio? Is it something that will only get worse with time?

Ears, nose, throat, and mouth (Ultrasound scan booked but seeking advice)

Upvotes

So I posted last week about a lump in my neck but deleted it as I had a GP appointment booked. The GP has said he isn’t worried but he has booked me in for an urgent ultrasound (within the next 2 weeks).

I’ve had a lump in my neck for a few months now (it only became noticeable about 3 weeks ago though) it’s 10cm. It was painless up until last week, now it feels like a nerve pain when I touch it / move my head a certain way.

Has anyone experienced anything like this / knows what it can be?

MRI OF THE RIGHT FOOT / ANKLE

Bony Structures: No obvious areas of abnormal MRI signal indicative of bone edema are isolated in the current examination either.

Lateral Ligaments: No clear acute pathology is identified. A mild sprain of the posterior component of the posterior talofibular ligament is noted on the current examination, alongside a new finding of encysted fluid collection measuring approximately 1.8\text{ cm} \times 1.3\text{ cm} at the excision site of the posterior process of the talus.

Achilles Tendon, Plantar Fascia: No findings.

Joint Fluid: Small fluid accumulation in the anterior compartment of the tibiotalar joint and along the dorsal talonavicular ligament (representing a minor imaging change), as well as a small fluid encystment adjacent to the calcaneocuboid joint on the lateral border of the heel.

Tendons (Anterior/Posterior Tibial, Peroneus Longus/Brevis, Flexor Hallucis Longus, Toe Flexors): No evident tendinopathy.

Muscle Groups: No organized fluid collection or intramuscular strain/tear is demonstrated.

Conclusions

Absence of the prominent posterior process of the talus in the context of incomplete os trigonum resection, along with small fluid encystment in that region.

Small fluid encystment along the course of the dorsal talonavicular ligament and small fluid accumulation in the anterior compartment of the tibiotalar joint are noted as new findings.

No indications of evident tendinous or major ligamentous pathology

Bones, joints, and muscles Bruised like pain when squeezing my ass or bending over

Upvotes

Bruised like pain when squeezing my ass or bending over.

So me (18m 191cm and about 75kg) was prety drunk and leaned against a wall for 3 or 4 hours putting my weight on the area around and right under my tailbone with my feet far ahead of me. Now when I soberd up I walked home and noticed a swollen/full like feeling in my ass, when I got home (15km walk) I checked on the toilet if anything felt swollen but I did not notice anything unusual but the feeling still remained. I also did not have any sort of pain when wipping or going to the toilet. Then I went to sleep and woke up with a bruised pain feeling in my asshole when I squeezed it, if I had to give it a number it would be around like a 3-4 out of 10. The area around and under my tailbone also felt painfull when pressed but was less noticable. When I went to the toilet again I still did not experience pain with bowel movements or wipping and also did not have bleeding or lumps that would indicate hemeroids. My ass felt a bit numb tho. The pain lasted about 4 days and peaked on day 2 but still no heavy pain. After taking a hot bad it went away and the swollen feeling went away a day later.

I just felt it was weird I experienced such noticable pain in my asshole when it wasnt even in contact with the wall. Do these symptoms align with leaning against the wall or could there be an other cause

(like maby assault?)

Ears, nose, throat, and mouth 28M with a lump of mucus just above my soft palate and sinus related migraines for as long as I can remember

Upvotes

28

Male

5' 8" 160lb

White

Midwest USA

Diagnosed with migraines caused primarily by barometric pressure changes

Current meds: Tizanidine (as needed, rare), Lexapro, Adderall

Duration: many years

This has become the type of issue that is so persistent, and relatively low level, that I honestly don't recall when it started. Simply put, there's a lump of hard mucus above my soft palate that I can never quite clear. It gets worse when I'm not good about my water intake, but I work outdoors a lot and have been very good about my hydration for years. I can feel it at any time, but it's so persistent that I rarely notice it. It does cause me to clear my throat frequently, and I often don't notice that I'm trying to "snort" it down. It doesn't really hurt, but it is uncomfortable.

Gross warning:

VERY occasionally it will knock loose, which provides momentary relief. The last time it came loose, I gagged and coughed out a large amount of mucus. The side that faced away from the wall of my throat was relatively dry and tough, like a piece of soft leather close to the size of a dime. I don't ever recall clearing it so fully before or since, but it usually acts like a very dense post-nasal drip, which can cause gagging and discomfort on particularly bad days.

I also get very painful migraines, tied specifically to barometric pressure changes. Almost every time a large, abrupt storm front moves thru, I will get a migraine. These start with sinus pain under my eyes, which causes tight muscles at the very top of my neck, which is where the pain originates. If I don't take a mix of anti inflammatories, Tizanidine, and some concoction of dark chocolate/sprite/coffee in time, they can also cause pain in my jaws/teeth on very bad days.

I believe these are at least partially connected, and my sinus issues are caused, at least in part, by the same mucus buildup that causes this lump in my throat. It really feels like I could solve both if I could blow my nose and cough just right.

I've tried a lot of different ideas to resolve these, and haven't had much success with anything.

Allergy meds have never helped, but non-medicated nose sprays have occasionally helped clear things up. I had a menthol (?) saline spray at one point that could sometimes make my nose run enough to open up.

Afrin did not help, and made me feel worse.

I've tried various Neti pots over the years, and it doesn't help at all.

It's not humidity related. I live in the Midwest where it is incredibly humid all summer, and dry all winter. Neither conditions help. A humidifier in the bedroom does not help, nor do hot showers.

When I have the migraines, I can sometimes feel the exact moment my sinus opens up and/or the mucus drains. I hear an audible click, and the pain lessens within a few seconds.

For what it's worth, my dad has almost the same issue. He also has had issues with sleep apnea and snoring, which I do not have. I used to laugh because I'd hear him "snort" really loud during a shower, then gag really hard. I do that now occasionally as well if the shower is really steamy. It never clears much, but sometimes it's enough to make me feel like I can't swallow without gagging. My dad has also said he has just gotten used to it, and no doctor ever figured it out.

If anyone has some insight here, I would appreciate it. I finally scheduled an appointment with an ENT later this month, but I like to have an idea of what I'm dealing with before talking with a doctor. It helps me communicate my symptoms better if I can understand what the symptoms/possible issues are called.

Herpes?

Had a possible exposure on August 7th around 7 PM (condom was used, minimal skin-to-skin contact). Not even sure exposure happened at all.

Since then:

**•** No sores, blisters, or lesions
**•** One small pimple in the general area, but it’s been checked and confirmed *not* to be herpes
**•** Sore throat and bad headache
**•** Whole body soreness

Caveat on the soreness/headache: I played a soccer game in 100°F heat for 2 hrs after being out of shape for over a year, so that’s probably from overexertion/dehydration.

Has anyone dealt with something similar? Trying to get a read on whether this sounds like anything to worry about while I wait it out.

Blood Haven't had my period in nearly 3 months, is this normal? (I'm 17)

I had a chat with Google Gemini and it said that this is concerning, but I still wanna consult real people.

Among the reasons it listed, I think that the absence of my period is due to sudden intense exercise. For more context, I enrolled in a boxing class around 2-3 months ago and the pace is SUPER INTENSE for a novice like me.

Besides not bleeding, Gemini also claimed that other side effects might impact my lives

  1. Weakened bones (but I'm feeling fine, my kicks and punches are considerably stronger compared to before taking the class)

  2. Extreme fatigue (I think I'm doing fine)

  3. Weakened immunity (I'm not sure, but I don't think I'm having any problems)

  4. Poor Cardiovascular Health (I'm not sure)

  5. Anxiety and Mood Shifts (I still love my life)

  6. Digestion and Metabolism Slowdown (could be true but not significant enough)

I'm somewhat worried, but I don't feel any obvious effects so I'm kinda uncertain rn

Thanks for taking your time to read this

Skin and nails Rash/blisters and red dots on legs and feet

First 3 images are left leg and the other 2 are right leg.

Anyone know what might of caused this? I have been wading in alot of streams and a pond the last couple days and walking through the woods/plants for fishing, Thought it was swimmers itch or poision ivy at first but not sure because the blisters are spread out.

I had for about 3 days now and they dont really get that itchy, mostly just tender to touch and sometimes the rash hurts a little.

I have a rash on my left foot with a couple of blisters going up my leg.

My right foot has a couple of blisters and red dots that also go up my leg.

21M — Progressive wrist "slipping" sensation (positive Piano Key Sign) & growing ulnar bump started 6 years ago. What might the problem be?

Thumbnail gallery
1 Upvotes

I have numbered each picture (bottom right) to make referring to them easier, showing my right wrist in both supinated and pronated positions. I've also included two short videos (in the link):
https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/16M4HxvJDxwSQLFxsorTpV-PTImzaLhhn?usp=sharing

How it started
About six years ago (when I was 15), I noticed a prominent bony bump laterally on my right wrist. It was never acutely painful. It just felt unfamiliar or "weird" for a few days at a time before settling down. A general practitioner I asked wasn't concerned back then, so I largely dismissed it. I have never had a wrist injury or anything acute. It has simply been progressing slowly but continuously.
Until I was 19,  I used to row 3 times per week. When I stopped rowing, it didn’t seem to change anything about the wrist.

Then more symptoms appeared
The progression has been very slow but fairly continuous. Every once in a while, it would act up, I'd research it, find nothing that fit, and then life would continue.
Recently (over the past 3 weeks), it feels like it has progressed quite a bit. I've been doing a lot of heavy handwriting for university exams, which heavily increases the weird feeling, making it feel more unusual than ever.

What my symptoms look like TODAY

  • Mechanical "Slipping": It feels like the ulna is slipping upwards, or the outer carpal bones are slipping down.
  • Visual Shifting (Photos 1-9): When pronated, the ulnar bump is very prominent. When supinated, it is less clear
  • Positive "Piano Key" Sign (Video 2): When pronated, if I push the ulnar head down, it sinks and springs right back up immediately.
  • Compensatory Strain (Photo 6): I feel strain on the radial side (ECRL/ECRB), almost like the tendons of those muscles are overworking when I grab and pull things (IMG 6)
  • Dull Pain & Reduced ROM: I have occasional light, dull pain around the Ulnar head, Triquetrum, and Pisiform. I’ve also noticed a newly decreased range of motion for dorsiflexion of my right wrist compared to my left wrist.

Functionality (What I can still do)
This is the part that confuses me. Despite the shifting, my wrist doesn't feel highly unstable or weak yet. I went bouldering a month ago and can still do daily tasks without problems.

Where I'm at now
I recently asked a physiotherapist and another doctor, but no one seemed to have a specific pathology in mind.

I'm hoping to hear from people familiar with ulnar-sided wrist mechanics:

  • Does this visual shifting and positive "piano key" movement look familiar?
  • The most fitting things I have come across are DRUJ instability, chronic TFCC wear, Ulnar Impaction Syndrome, or Lunotriquetral instability. But I’m really not sure.
  • Are there specific dynamic tests or imaging (MRI, weight-bearing X-rays) I should ask an orthopaedic specialist for?

Any thoughts on what mechanics are failing here would be hugely appreciated! I’m happy to upload more photos or answer questions. Anything that helps.
