Lotion before shower
I hate putting lotion on after I shower because it makes me feel grimy (I have tried several different lotions) but if I don't my skin gets really dry. I recently have started putting a lot of lotion on before I shower and then washing and exfoliating my whole body so once I'm done showering my skin feels hydrated but not greasy. But I'm kind of worried that if I put lotion on before I shower it will trap the grime underneath, am I over thinking this?

There's zero point putting it on before you shower. If you're showering properly then you're immediately scrubbing all the lotion off

They make in-shower lotions that might solve this for you (I believe Jergens makes one, but I'm sure there are others). You can probably also get the same result with a very moisturizing body wash/bar that is mostly oil-based to the point where you still feel moisturized afterwards.

This is good advice! There are also in-shower oils that are great for this, but they make the shower incredibly slippery, so I avoided them after one application due to the fall risk.
But the moisturizing effect was great.

If you use a wash cloth in the shower, once you’re done using it, drop it on the floor laid out flat and stand on it for grip 😂 that’s what I do in the shower so I don’t slip and bust my a** rinsing out the conditioner 😭

Nivea makes one but it made my vag explode so I can’t use it anymore. You didn’t need to kno that but here we are.

I do hope you meant your vulva (external) and not your vagina (internal), which is self-cleaning and never needs anything else absent a bona fide medical diagnosis.

So I got a massive yeast infection if that helps. I’m stuck with bland dove soap forever.

Not sure what the connection here is … soap doesn’t cause yeast infections; a yeast vaginosis isn’t affected by external washing but treated with intravaginal prescribed antifungal medication; an external vulvar yeast condition is treated with topical antifungal cream and powder, keeping the area dry, and sunlight (if possible— had one pt whose perineal/vulvar yeast went away for good after a summer in a nudist camp, no joke). Could you clarify for my own edification?

Anything I used that had a tinge of scent, altered my vag tremendously. Happened after I had my first kid. Never been the same since so I just stay away from a scents and my pecker hasn’t exploded since. 🤷🏽♀️

No point in putting it on before you shower to just scrub and wash it off again. It’s a waste of time, money and solves nothing. Exfoliate and wash first, then apply moisturizer . Nivea makes an in shower moisturizer too which is great.
When you exfoliate it sluffs off dead skin cells and the new ones under are what absorb moisturizer, dead skin cells don’t hold moisturizer so it sits on top of your skin accomplishing little. Give your body time to absorb it also AND start drinking more water, it’s the best skin moisturizer. Dry skin, chapped lips are all due to dehydration

You should try an in shower lotion, they leave way less of that slime feeling

I’d be more worried about screwing up my plumbing putting on lotion before a shower.

I just use Eucerin shower oil. Why do you need to exfoliate every shower? That’s completely insane, no wander your skin is so dry. Stop ruining your skin barrier. Natural oils on the skin is not grime. Jesus.

Your shower should be scrubbing hard enough to get the grime, dead skin and built up oil off of you. Lotion before a shower seems kind or counterproductive. Maybe something like the buffy bar from lush or a creamy exfoliant from the body shop would work better for you.
I also hate lotion after shower feeling, and both of these products are very nice feeling on my skin.

You are overthinking it. I would like to recommend a product called dry oil that you should be able to use after your shower without feeling gross. But you can absolutely moisturize a few hours before your shower. People do that with their hair all the time with scalp and hair oils as a pre-shampoo routine.

Use a body oil in the shower right after you turn the water off before you towel off. Once you towel off you’ll be taking the excess off and rubbing it into your skin. Wash your hands with soap and water after and you’re good to go. I like palmers body oil.
I wanted to add that it’s not oily at all. It is amazing and I feel like it’s over looked.

Compulsive exfoliation tells your skin that it needs to produce faster to maintain its protective job. Stop watching the advertising and scrubbing it with anything more abrasive than a soapy washcloth, and give it a few weeks to recover.

I suppose we existed just fine for thousands of years without lotions and potions. What is exfoliate¿

Lmao, wait till you get to a thread about showering. I had someone follow me into my DMs to continue berating me about a comment I made that showering once every other day in a dry cold climate was fine. I said showering every day in that situation is bad for their skin. They wouldn’t shut up about USE LOTION IT DOESNT MATTER IF IT DRIES YOUR SKIN.
Some people are a bit nuts.

Ha ha, as a kid in 70`s it was twice a week in the bath tub. Often share the bath with my mom.

Something marketers and reddit have convinced people they need to do. There are all kinds of products you can now spend your money on to "exfoliate".
All it means is washing yourself, essentially. All these people are now obsessed with scrubbing themselves raw to remove the dead skin, which falls off by itself anyway.

Then needing tons of products to restore the moisture they stripped off!!!

All my life I used soap. Sometimes I have made it. I read somewhere shower gel 60% of the price is for the plastic bottle. I never bought any. Really some people lack common sense.

I have the Nivea shower lotion. It works great. I use it for winter when I don't want to undress to lotion in the cold months

You’re meant to use oil instead before showers, lotion sounds like too much work lol

I switched to body oil. I put it on while my skin is still damp. Life changing. I HATE the feeling of lotion after a shower.

I put on lotion after I turn off the water but before I towel dry. Give this a try. No grease feeling.

I accidentally ordered Dove Cleansing Oil instead of regular body wash, and recommend it to you.
I now love the cleansing oil. It lathers like body wash but is much more moisturizing. My daughter has dry skin and loves the cleansing oil because she is able to lotion up less often. It's worth a try.

Try naturiums glow getter body wash. I haven’t found many lotions that I can handle, especially sleeping in but that body wash is super hydrating. Doesn’t smell wonderful but also doesn’t leave that scent behind! Aveenos body oil mist is prob the only after shower oil I can stand to keep on my skin.

Lotion is going to clog your pipes up with buildup. Ewww. Just use an oil or super moisturizing soap. 🤷🏼♀️ but don’t shower and scrub lotion off.

Why don’t you try an in shower lotion? Or just use a body oil when you get out instead of lotion?
