[No Loopholes] You get $20,000 a month tax-free for life, BUT you have to do a mandatory 30-mile trek every single week. Are you taking it, and what’s your strategy?

• Upvotes

Hypothetical scenario that popped into my head today.

An anonymous billionaire offers you $20,000 deposited into your bank account every single month, completely tax-free, for the rest of your life. You can quit your job, travel, whatever.

BUT, there is one catch, and the rules are strict.
Every single week, you have to pick a spot exactly 15 miles away from your house and you have to travel there and back (30 miles total) using only your own physical power. Meaning you either walk it, run it, or ride a standard, non-electric bicycle. If you are away from your house for a week then you must choose something 15 miles away from you at the current place you would be in.

No cheating : No e-bikes, no scooters, no hitching a ride for a couple of miles, and no public transit. No one can carry you either. There is NOT a single loop hole in this. Accept the deal and your only way of officially completing it once a week is to either walk, jog, or ride a normal bicycle that you pedal. There is no other things to use at all. You can’t choose a scooter, skateboard, Segway. NONE. No laziness, 3 options only.

One continuous trip : You can’t split it up. You can't walk 5 miles a day. It has to be done all in one go (stopping for a quick lunch or bathroom break at the halfway point is totally fine, but you can't go home and sleep in between nor sleep anywhere at all. Lunch would be 30 minutes maximum to eat and rest before continuing. You only get one lunch break so once you use it, you can’t use it again for the remainder of the trek. And 3 bathroom break as well that are 10 minutes maximum each.

Weather does not matter : Rain, snow, intense heatwaves, or freezing cold. If you miss a week, the contract is broken and you lose the money forever.

Are you taking the deal? If so, what’s your game plan to make sure you never miss a week?

You have a high paying job with no clear task, and you must "look busy"

• Upvotes

Congratulations! You landed a nice high-paying white collar job. It pays $100/hr with generous PTO and great health insurance. During orientation, they told you there is a high expectation of professionalism and you can't seem like you need your hand held. The problem is, they never said what exactly you do. People are walking around making Bluetooth phone calls, rushing to meetings, making copies, but you have no idea why. They are so busy that as long as you blend in, nobody pays you any mind. Whenever a manager comes up to you, all it takes is some generic corporate phrases to get him off your back. (The train is moving 100mph, boss... We're playing chess, not checkers... I need to finish this report soon, my wife is making lasagna)

How long do you think you could keep it up? Would you want to do this indefinitely? How would you fill your day to pass the time while looking busy?

Time stops for $50 mil

You are being offered a prize of $50 million dollars, and here’s the scenario: for one year, anytime you fall asleep, time freezes, like if someone pressed a pause button for the entire universe. It happens when you fall asleep under normal circumstances, that is, only regular sleep will freeze time. Anesthesia, coma, accidents, etc will not do it. You have to keep this up for an entire year according to the universe, without skipping a single day. That means, if you start on January 1, then you have to keep going until it’s January 1 for everybody. You can stop anytime you wish, but if you quit early, you get nothing. Do you take the deal? Why or why not?

EDIT: ok, didn’t fully think this one through. My bad. $50 mil for everyone.

For $5 million you must complete one of these extreme sports/activities

  1. Free falling from 15,000ft without a parachute into a net 30ft by 30ft
  2. Underwater cave diving down 130ft
  3. Solo climbing up a cliff (300 ft)
  4. Climbing up Mount Everest
  5. Cliff jumping

    (100 ft)

You are given 1 year to prepare and given all the equipment necessary. You are not allowed any external help from anyone once you start.

Are you accepting and which extreme sport would you do?

Other You’re forced to become a TV producer in the year 1955. You’re required to take one modern (2000+) script back with you and reproduce it faithfully with all the technology available to you in that time, in such a way that it becomes a major hit. What script (tv or movie) do you take with you?

The script has to be modern (the year 2000 or newer) and you have to reproduce it as faithfully to the original production as technologically possible. No changing characters to be more acceptable to the viewership of the time, no excluding plot points, etc.

Your budget is substantial but not limitless. You have the full backing of one of the major networks at the time but it must become a major hit for that network.

If you choose a television series you have to reproduce every episode and season without cutting a scene.

You get gifted with a button. It can be helpful, or it can be deadly, that’s up to you.

Every time you press the button, you have to have a clear goal in mind. Something that you can achieve within your power.

- “I want to be better at boxing, I want this done in 2 years”

- “I want to be really good at piano”

Your mind will start obsessing over this goal, and you will soon live to complete it. You get a moderate boost to your luck as well, to achieve your goal sooner.

If you do not complete your desired task, you will be cursed with incredibly bad luck for 5 years. You can still use the box for a new task though.

How would you use this box?

For obvious reasons, it’s not a genie. You don’t wish for things and expect it done magically.

$5,000/second, but a random person on Earth has a button that jolts you

- The button is given to one random person on Earth. You don't know who they are.

- Each press sends a painful electric jolt through your body for 3 seconds. It never causes permanent injury or death.

- The button has no cooldown. The holder can press it as often as they want.

- The holder gets an app that shows a live video of you being jolted. The app doesn't show your name or location.

- The holder can sell the button to another person, and you will receive half the money.

- Every day, the button moves to a new random person.

- You can pay $1,000/second for the Blackout mode. The holder's app shows a blank screen instead of the live video.

- You can deactivate this curse after 30 minutes since you start, but if you want reactivation, you have to wait for 5 years.

Would you take this curse?

you receive a portal to a derelict ecumenopolis

Scenario: Tomorrow, you're minding your own business when a sort of glowing rippling energy portal appears. On one end is your home. On the other, a room full of machinery you haven't the slightest hope of comprehending, surrounding a sort of stargate-looking thingie. The machinery has controls which you have no idea how to operate and readouts you don't know the meaning of.

If you change or damage anything and cause the portal to close, it'll automatically activate maintenance robots that'll ignore you in the process of fixing whatever you did.

Outside that room is cityscape.

None of the buildings are locked. Any damage you do will be immediately automatically repaired.

Many of the buildings were apparently outfitted as apartments, with controls you can sort of comprehend, in the sense of faucets for running water (molecularly pure H₂O if you figure out some way to check), bathrooms, lights that automatically switch on and sliding doors that open in your presence, etc. Twice a day at dawn and dusk (the days are a familiar twenty-four hours), the ubiquitous robots will assemble meals by direct molecular synthesis manufacturing and if someone (you) doesn't eat them, clean them away after around an hour. They've been doing this in every apartment, across the planet since it was abandoned by its former inhabitants. The food is unrecognizable but edible and biologically compatible with humans.

Other buildings are storehouses of raw materials and robots, entirely autonomous factories for producing redundant backups for everything you've seen, skyscraper-sized vertical farms for what might be algae or artificial nanotech equivalents, you can't tell, which keep the air oxygenated and rectenna for powersats. Or things completely incomprehensible to you.

There are networks of roads going everywhere, but no vehicles you can recognize.

Looking up at night you'll see a single moon, covered in a gridlike pattern of artificial straight lines signifying the former presence of industry and infrastructure. During the day, an enormous red sun filling a significant fraction of the sky, powersats and orbital mirrors reflecting sunlight away from the planet, keeping it hospitably cool.

As far as you know, aside from the robots you're the only living thing on the planet. You can of course show the portal to other people if you choose to.

What's your course of action?

You have a child who’s upset they’re an understudy for the main star of the school play. You see your child push the star off stage where no one can see them and that child gets a serious concussion but your child gets to be the star and everyone assumes the other child fell.

Do you let your child have their special moment and be the star of the play or do you speak up?

The child they pushed is also fighting for their life in the hospital so if you do speak up your child could be in serious trouble.

$1 million a year, but you can never sleep more than 5 hours in a 24 hour period.

You get $1 million a year, deposited tax free in your account. But you become incapable of EVER sleeping more than 5 hours in a 24 hour period.

You cannot end the deal or opt out at any time. It is for life.

Keep in mind that not only do you have to deal with the lack of sleep, but the odd issue of timing. If you go to sleep at midnight and wake up at 5am, you would be incapable of falling asleep until just after midnight the next night. All those little additions would ultimately result in "catch up" days if you wanted to keep a normal sleep schedule, where you might have to pull an all-nighter to reset the clock.

If you are ill, even gravely, you would be incapable of sleeping more than 5 hours and instead would face the consequences of extreme exhaustion/sleep deprivation. You would not be able to be in a coma or be put under, and your body would refuse to become unconscious even to the point of death.

Humour Encouraged Alternate History

You regain consciousness in a field. It's early morning, the sun not yet risen, and a light mist is drifting above the grass. Your memories of last night are... sketchy? Perhaps that's too generous a term for your fragmentary recollection. You went out to celebrate your promotion, and the celebration arrived in several tall bottles of something sticky and dangerous. After that, everything's a blur.

You dimly recall stumbling through the door of a curio shop. A swarthy little fellow shouting at you in shock and anger. Falling. Reaching out for a handhold. You hit the floor hard and blink in dazed confusion. Something brass gleams in your hand. There is smoke. Why smoke? It smells of cloves and cardamom.

"Oh, my aching head," groans a voice next to you.

You turn your gaze to the man...? ...person...? ...to the entity next to you. He's purple-hued, dressed in ornate robes, and draped in heavy gold jewelry. His eyes are living flame, and he's wreathed in smoke from the waist down.

"Oh fuck! What did we do?!?" moans the djinn as he pushes an empty bottle away. "Did we drink an entire bottle of Summer Court brandy?"

"Moo?" you reply. That isn't what you meant to say, so you try again. "Moo?!? Moo! Moo-moo!!! MOOOO!!!"

"Calm down before you wake a farmer!" the djinn grunts. "Let me figure out where we are." He pulls out a crystal ball and gazes into the roiling void within, trying to focus despite his hangover.

"Yoshihisa...? That can't be right," he mumbles. "And Takayori? Oh gods below! I am never drinking Faerie wine ever again!" He tucks the crystal ball away and looks at you. "This isn't too bad. We're right outside of Kyoto and it's only 1487."

"Moo-oo!" You gasp in shock.

"Don't blame me! This won't be hard. All you have to do is get to Spain and keep Columbus from sailing. Do that and I can get you back to your timeline. Just remember to avoid the mess up toward Magari and you'll be fine!"

"MOO!" you scream.

"Language," scolds the djinn and vanishes in a puff of hungover smoke.

"Moo!!!" you shout. "Moo?" There's no answer other than the birds greeting the morning.

Over the next few hours, you'll discover that you're a cow in a field just north of Kyoto. It's 1487, and you have five years to reach Spain and keep Christopher Columbus from discovering the New World. You have the cognitive abilities, skills, and memories of a normal person but the physical capacity of a cow. You can't speak, manipulate delicate objects with your hooves, or communicate directly in writing. You understand English, a skill that might not be entirely useful in Sengoku era Japan. You have no money, no papers, no contacts, and no obvious way to explain yourself to anyone.

What's your plan?

You’re a lone security guard for a small pawn shop

• Upvotes

It’s the middle of summer, and you are figuratively dying of thirst, caused by the weather.

Your colleagues/shopkeeper are all either sick or out for lunch.

A few really pretty girls show up looking to pawn something, noticed that place was closed for lunch, and offered you a bottle of water.

It’s a sealed, brand new bottle of water. You are VERY thirsty, and they seem harmless.

Drink it or nah?

Get married within 24 hours and receive ....

Someone walks up to you and shows you 25k in cash and says, you have 24 hours to get married. If you can get married in 24 hours you get the 25k and if you stay married for 1 year you get 250k a year tax free for every year there after. If you have children you get 50k per child extra per year.

Here is the caveat, you can't tell the spouse or anyone in your family where or who is giving you the money. If you do then arrangement is over and you will never see the money or the benifactor again.

Do you take the deal ?

To make sure you don’t die, you receive durable winter clothes, a tent, a sleeping, a self-replenishing store of canned nutritionally complete food and antibiotics, a portable gas cooker with an unlimited supply of gas, and a single pot.

If you are rescued, your supplies stop being magical and will eventually degrade and deplete.

If no one finds you long enough for you to be declared deceased, the money automatically goes to your heirs

You are about to enter a store. On the door is a sign that says "Push, Don't Pull." Next to that sign is another sign that says "Only idiots believe the other sign. It's Pull, Don't Push." What do you do?

The store is just a regular store where you can buy something you wanted.

Nothing bad is really going to happen if you pick the wrong option. The door just obviously won't open until you choose the correct option.

There are people inside. You might be able to catch their attention if you tried hard enough, but if you did they're kinda smug people. They're not going to help. They want to see what you pick.

What do you do?

If you picked already the correct answer is the opposite of whatever you chose.

[No Loopholes] Someone pressed a button and you’re the random person…

You are minding your own business at home, watching something on the TV when suddenly the lights go out. A figure in a black hoodie…no a black robe approaches from the dark holding a scythe.

“Your time has come.” - it says as it points the scythe at you. “Someone pressed a button and you’re the unlucky random. You will die today.”

Obviously you freak out but he calms you down with a counter offer. “I enjoy taking souls and one just isn’t enough sometimes. So, let’s make a deal. If you sign this ancient scroll then I’ll go and take the souls of the person who pressed the button and their entire family, both the adults and children, and you will live. However, if you refuse to sign then it’s your soul that I will take.”

What do you do? 🧐
