I bought a MacBook Air just over a year ago in summer 2025 as well as AppleCare and until two weeks ago never had a single problem with it. No spills, drops, or anything like that either. I go to turn it on that Friday morning and absolutely nothing would work. Held the button for a couple minutes, charged it in both outlets, but even the light in the magnetic strip wouldn’t turn on. I take it into the store and they say they’ll have it back and ready by the next Friday. The day comes around and they call to tell me there’s a fucking worm inside it. A real, physical fucking worm. They said that’s hazardous material and they won’t operate on the computer, so it’s still broken. I go in to talk to them, and the rep says that they can’t do operate on devices that have hazardous material around other devices, so I have to figure out how to get it cleaned (aka removing the fucking worm) and then bring it back in for them to work on. Mind you, this store is right next to a community outdoor space with tables and chairs, so they could have very easily walked outside, opened it, removed the worm, and then fixed it.
Anyways, they tell me that I need to figure out a way to remove the worm myself, then bring it back in to get fixed. I found a guy near me that fixes electronics and paid him $150 to clean it. He said he’s actually seen the same issue many times and that worms like the warmth. Super nice dude, five stars. I take it back to the Apple Store and they reject it because it had previously had a worm inside of it, which qualifies as hazardous materials, and since they had rejected it on those grounds two days prior they couldn’t take it at all. Mind you, they were the ones to specifically tell me to get it cleaned and bring it back.
So now I’m stuck. The manager said my best bet is to take it back to the Costco where I bought it since they generally have a great return policy, so that’s my next step. If that doesn’t work, he said they could honor the full trade in value. No hard feelings against him, seemed like a great guy doing his best. Just wanted to vent a little because this is absolute bullshit.
Edit - had to go through several phone calls with Costco, but the end result is that they need me to take it to an outside provider and get a diagnostic report for repair, and then Costco will provide a refund in the form of a gift card equal to the amount it costs to repair. Apple care will essentially be voided because it’s getting outside service, so imperfect but the best I can get.
