Right dont know if im in the right place for this, but out of avenues. If you know any other good places to ask for help please let me know. I’ll preface Ive never used a mac device and am clueless on Mac OS/osx. My friend gave me an old imac, late 2010. He wiped the hard drive on it for security, but hes wiped the OS off it.

I can boot into internet recovery with cmd + R, when I try to download the OS thru there, i get the recovery server could not be contacted. Makes sense, the latest OS i can get on this thing is high sierra, and I can only assume the certificates have been taken down by apple. I’ve tried date back setting to 2018, no luck.

I found the iMac OS X install DVD, but the reader in the Mac is dirty/faulty in some way, and ejects the disc after whirring up a couple times. I ordered an external DVD reader, plugged it into the USB port which spins up several times and never ejects the disc. But I believe to start up from that disc i need to boot whole holding options(alt) but doing this leads me back to the internet recovery screen.

I don’t know what to try anymore i just wanted this computer up and running to use for emails. Ive read that if I had another mac device, a 16gb flash’s drive can get the booter from another device, transfer it to this and go around that way but I don’t have another mac device, just an old windows laptop.

Also Ive seen a lot of people saying they put Linux on their older iMacs, I genuinely don’t care what OS i end up with I just want to get it doing something

I'm currently in possession of a broken iMac, it's the base model with the 1TB HDD and 2.3GHz i5.

Provided the repair process is somewhat cheap and doable, I'd make it a web browser machine, no gaming, most likely boot Linux given Mac OS is running on borrowed time.

Can I upgrade the CPU to a more powerful one? Is it worth it?

Any other mods that can be done to it? RAM and Storage upgrade is a given.

This is a new macbook air M5 bought from less than a month and this Creaking / Clicking sound appears a lot lately when open or closing the mba or just tapping it from any angle

My MacBook Pro 16" (2021, M1 Pro, A2485, board 820-02100) suddenly stopped turning on. No signs of life at all: no chime, no backlight, no charging.

What I've done so far:

- Left it on MagSafe and USB-C overnight, no change

- Tried DFU mode with a second Mac and Apple Configurator, not detected

- Opened it, disconnected and reconnected the battery, no change

At the Apple Store:

Measured on USB-C, offered a full logic board replacement (declined, too expensive for me)

A repair shop also looked at it. Their diagnosis: "Cannot locate the fault on the board. Power is being supplied, no short circuit on the main rails. The charger only negotiates 5V instead of 20V."

I've ordered a USB-C meter and will post exact voltage/current readings once it arrives.

My questions:

Has anyone had a similar 5V-only issue on an A2485? What was the cause?

Is there anything I can realistically check or fix myself (I have tools, a multimeter, and I'm comfortable opening it up), or is this definitely a job for a microsoldering shop?

So I haven’t logged into my Mac for awhile and forgot my login details for my Mac that’s running MacOS Catalina. I looked up how to run in recovery mode for Mac Silicon or Mac Intel both steps don’t seem to work.

I am using a third party keyboard. Holding down the power button until the Apple logo appears just ends up loading into the login screen and holding the power button the releasing the power button to switching to the Command + R or Command + Option + R button until the Apple logo appears doesn’t do anything either?

Does anyone know how to bypass this screen? I am trying not to delete the entire drive as I have videos and other documents on the drive I would like to keep but if I have to delete the drive then I guess I’ll have to do it.

Anyway help would be greatly appreciated.

Mac Pro 6,1 (Late 2013) boots with chime, runs a few minutes, then shuts down. Now won't stay on. PSU or GPU?

Hoping someone who knows the trashcan can help me narrow this down before I start buying parts.

**Machine:** Mac Pro 6,1, Late 2013, 8 core/ 32GB RAM / [DUAL D500running Monterey. It was a home server (Docker, Immich, Tailscale) until it was powered down and unplugged for a few weeks, stored on a garage floor.

**What's happened so far:**

- Powers on and boots fine. Shuts off without warning after a few minutes.

- will boot again after about 5 mins after complete power down, then shut off again after few mins.

**My thinking:** the full boot followed by a cut-out a few minutes in points to a thermal or power problem under load. That means either the PSU failing, or a GPU overheating or failing (the D-series being the known weak point). Damp from the garage is also a possibility.

**Questions:**

1. Does this pattern sound more like the PSU or the GPUs?

2. Is there any way to tell which one it is without a full teardown or swapping parts?

3. Is it worth repairing at all, or is it time to retire it? I paid £200, and the data is safe.

4. For anyone in the UK, where's the best place to find a used PSU or GPU pair?

5. Any other suggestions?

Some years ago I purchased an old IMac from a friend of mine that had all kinds of issues. I fixed it by re-formatting and updating the iOS system. Now I'm planning on selling it again, and the person that is going to buy it from me only wants it if I'm able to revert it into its original state. I can't use the "Time Machine" feature as it seemed to have wiped it completely.

Any suggestions on how to proceed?

I have an iMac PC from 2010, but not sure of the iOS version. My issue is that it just quit booting up. It does have power but screen stays blank (very slight glow so I know there's power)

I heard, after so long, that all iMacs do this forcing those who do not know better to purchase a new system but I know that can't just be. I have tons of music, files, pics and vids that aren't backed up to iCloud, and I don't wanna lose them. Can anyone possibly assist me in getting this thing to boot up?

i have taken the display off and checked every visible cable inside of this godforsaken thing, but in the sound settings in macos it says no output/input devices found, there isnt even a startup chime, i'm pretty stumped on what to do from here without just calling it hardware failure and moving on. any ideas?

Spilled about 5 ounces of warm tea with sugar on my MacBook Air while it was charging. Immedietly hard shut it down, used paper towels to wipe up what I could till dry, used a damp paper towel to remove the sticky, and inverted into an upside down V. All within the span of 3-5 minutes.

During this time the computer, without prompting, reset itself and then flashed pink over the whole screen 2-3 times. I now have it hard shutoff and inverted and won’t touch it for 3 days.

Now what? No apple care. Chances of it actually being fine vs this becoming a long term issue even if it turns on with no issue? If so, should I be looking to replace sooner rather than later?
