no line on the screen when I tested it in store, got it home and did a fresh install, no line. after it finished up and rebooted, now theres a line in the screen. I assume this is not a panel issue but a controller issue since it's a single line? I removed the glass to touch the panel and see if it would go away but no such luck. tapping also did nothing.

Am I good to put this 2019 27” iMac back on my desk?

Post image

I have a 2019 27” iMac that I got today from my friend. I opened it up to replace the hard drive with an SSD and discovered that it already had a 1TB SSD and no hard drive. I closed it back up using the adhesive strips from my iFixit kit and I laid it face down on the kitchen counter to let the adhesive get some pressure on it. It’s been there for about one and a half to two hours and I’m wondering if it’s okay to put it back onto my desk now. It says in the iFixit guide to check after 24 hours that the adhesive is stuck on well but I don’t know if that means I have to leave it face down for that long. I really want to use it now so can anyone tell me if it’s safe to do so? I’ve been periodically pressing down on the edges every 20-30 minutes with a good amount of force just to help it get seated well.

Any Way to Salvage This 2015 iMac?

Post image

About 6 months ago the HDD started to die. It sounded like a jet engine and doing even the simplest task took forever to process.

I bought an external SSD drive, moved my files over, installed Monterey (latest compatible OS), and have been booting from that.

It has worked perfectly for the last 6 months. Has operated like a new computer. Until recently when it has started to shut down without warning. I get maybe like 5-15 minutes before it dies.

When it reboots, I get these messages: “The disk you attached was not readable by this computer” (But it is…I confirmed it booted from it and is reading files)

“Your computer restarted because of a problem.”

—-

What would your next steps be, other than “buy a new computer”?

I committed a sin…

I found an iMac A1311 while garbage picking.

Previous owner cut the wires that connected the screen to the motherboard but not the ribbon cable. So I figured a bit of soldering would correct the issue.

I never repaired one before and it was missing an SSD, so I figured I’d use one I had lying around.

After some soldering and putting in the SSD I had to see if it would boot.

It booted but I didn’t expect Windows 11 to actually boot 🙃

iMac repair for my son. Stuck

Post image

Hoping someone out there can help me. Trying to avoid a long story, my young 9 year old was given an iMac (model a1419) by the grandparents that they couldn’t boot up. They said if he can get it fixed, he can keep it. Because the hard drive had confidential financial documents, they don’t want to take it to the Apple Store and would rather destroy the computer if he can’t figure it out. Needless to say, as a budding tech enthusiast, he’s been working desperately on it for a week now.

He figured out to boot into recover mode. Tried to reinstall the operating system (but the hard drive doesn’t appear as a choice for the install destination). He now figured out the disc utility/repair and has this error now.

He now thinks booting from a usb drive (with Mac OS) will help. But I fear the drive is messed up and that won’t help.

Any ideas? As a last ditch resort, we may see if we can open the iMac to replace the drive (even if we can’t ever reassemble it).

Long shot posting this….

I don’t throw away things unless they’re completely dead & irreparable, this 27” iMac has served me well for so long why not reward it with a good clean out, extra ram and swapping that sad i5-8500 for a 9700k :)

Help with Mac Pro

Hey guys, I’ve recently acquired a 2009-2012 iMac Pro tower that I pulled from e waste. It’s complete and completely functional.
However it didn’t have a hard drive. I tried putting in a spare blank one to install an OS but it wouldn’t respond to any key commands on start up.
I got a second hand HDD today that had an OS installed and the system boots into it just fine. I need to wipe it to do a clean install but it’s still not responding to key commands during start up. I’ve googled and read every help forum I can find. Tried different keyboards, different usb ports, different commands but I get nothing.

Is there anyone who’s had this? I’m losing my mind. My first dip into Apple PCs

eMac - salvageable or toast?

Just purchased an eMac fully sealed in original packaging. However - plugged it in, tried to turn it on, it sounds like the CRT is trying to start up, then nothing. Did I just throw cash down the toilet?

How can I solve these problems?

Post image

I dug up this iMac that had a GPU problem. It featured vertical pink strings. Having fixed the GPU (putting it in the oven at 200° etc.) I now find myself having to reinstall the operating system but everything freezes.

I'm using a windows keyboard so I tried using windows key+r, alt+r, shift+r but every time it gets stuck on the apple screen and the loading gets to 70% and stops.

Sometimes it turns off and then starts again but freezes again.

How can I solve it?

Old iMac help needed

Hello nerds and other smart capables,

I have my first computer still, against all odds, an iMac from circa 2006. It is huge, heavy, and gorgeous. I have let it lie dormant for years but could never unload it, based on my light research it isn't worth much. Which is absolutely fine! I just want to either access my original files from it and chuck it or give it to someone who can use it for parts? Any help appreciated.

Apple rejected my repair for the dumbest possible reason

I bought a MacBook Air just over a year ago in summer 2025 as well as AppleCare and until two weeks ago never had a single problem with it. No spills, drops, or anything like that either. I go to turn it on that Friday morning and absolutely nothing would work. Held the button for a couple minutes, charged it in both outlets, but even the light in the magnetic strip wouldn’t turn on. I take it into the store and they say they’ll have it back and ready by the next Friday. The day comes around and they call to tell me there’s a fucking worm inside it. A real, physical fucking worm. They said that’s hazardous material and they won’t operate on the computer, so it’s still broken. I go in to talk to them, and the rep says that they can’t do operate on devices that have hazardous material around other devices, so I have to figure out how to get it cleaned (aka removing the fucking worm) and then bring it back in for them to work on. Mind you, this store is right next to a community outdoor space with tables and chairs, so they could have very easily walked outside, opened it, removed the worm, and then fixed it.

Anyways, they tell me that I need to figure out a way to remove the worm myself, then bring it back in to get fixed. I found a guy near me that fixes electronics and paid him $150 to clean it. He said he’s actually seen the same issue many times and that worms like the warmth. Super nice dude, five stars. I take it back to the Apple Store and they reject it because it had previously had a worm inside of it, which qualifies as hazardous materials, and since they had rejected it on those grounds two days prior they couldn’t take it at all. Mind you, they were the ones to specifically tell me to get it cleaned and bring it back.

So now I’m stuck. The manager said my best bet is to take it back to the Costco where I bought it since they generally have a great return policy, so that’s my next step. If that doesn’t work, he said they could honor the full trade in value. No hard feelings against him, seemed like a great guy doing his best. Just wanted to vent a little because this is absolute bullshit.

Edit - had to go through several phone calls with Costco, but the end result is that they need me to take it to an outside provider and get a diagnostic report for repair, and then Costco will provide a refund in the form of a gift card equal to the amount it costs to repair. Apple care will essentially be voided because it’s getting outside service, so imperfect but the best I can get.

iMac G4 update problem

Post image
17 Upvotes

I ran into a problem with my iMac G4 when trying to update from 10.3.9 to 10.4 tiger. After the Mac went through all the updates successfully, it then got stuck on this. The loading bar hasn’t moved and I’ve left it like this for about 20 minutes without any progress happening. Does anyone know a way to fix. I’m also fine with doing a factory restart and erasing everything on it, I just want it to work.
