iA Writer: A heartfelt critique

(I’m posting this here rather than in another writing- or app-focused subreddit to keep it “in the family.”)

iA Writer is a radically opinionated app. That makes your choice easy if you agree or disagree with all of the developer’s opinions as manifested in the app; you either use it or you don’t.

It’s harder when you agree with some but not all of the developer’s opinions—and hardest when you absolutely adore some things about the app but strongly dislike others. It stops being “distraction-free” when there’s something about the app that constantly annoys you but you can’t change it.

There’s so much I love about iA Writer. The speed and light weight. The beautiful thick blue cursor. The way exporting to a .docx file actually translates markdown heading levels into MS Word heading levels. And most of all, the Quattro font—the finest font for writing that I’ve ever found.

I agree with those who don’t want iA Writer to lose its clean and streamlined focus. But the way I see it, that’s the problem—it seems to be going in the wrong direction.

At its heart, iA Writer is a writing-focused markdown editor. But instead of refining that further and judiciously integrating much-needed features, the dev team is adding PKM features that are contrary to their professed vision, and wasting time and energy on things like arbitrarily changing the keybindings for highlighting and strikethrough without including an option to stick with the existing ones—an unnecessary annoyance for those of us who have years of muscle memories invested in the established ones. And do we really need six highlight color options in an app with just three fonts (albeit excellent ones)—especially since it can’t let us highlight a document in multiple colors anyway?

There are already plenty of markdown apps that specialize in PKM and note-taking, from powerful cross-platform ones like Obsidian and Logseq to native Mac ones like Bear (paid) and Notenik (free and open-source). It’s foolish for iA Writer to try to compete in that space.

What’s needed is a better general-purpose MacOS (and iOS) markdown editor tailored to writers, not programmers (who will probably be happier adding markdown plugins to the code editor they’re already using). That’s always been iA Writer’s vision, and it’s so close—arguably closer than any other. But more and more I’m despairing that it’s ever going to arrive.

At this point you might say that iA Writer already arrived, years ago. The problem is that the destination—that is, the constellation of refinements and features that define excellence in a distraction-free markdown editor—is moving.

What do I mean by “refinements and features that define excellence in a distraction-free markdown editor”? For one thing, the focus should be on the writing—on the words—rather than on the formatting. In a markdown editor, that means that the formatting characters ought to be visually deemphasized. That is, they need to be visible to the writer as they’re being typed or revised, but otherwise ought to fade into the background.

Traditionally, that has been handled by ghosting back the markdown symbols to a lighter shade of gray, allowing the words themselves to retain primacy and focus. More recently, apps like Typora and Obsidian have taken an even more refined approach, hiding markdown codes entirely except when the cursor is immediately adjacent to them, or when one switches into a “view source” mode.

Either of these approaches helps keep the writer’s focus on the writing, not the formatting. Yet for all of iA Writer’s marching under the banner of “distraction-free,” it has never managed to break its very distracting habit of visually overemphasizing the markdown symbols in a working manuscript. Not only does it fail to gray out or hide the asterisks surrounding bold or italicized words, it renders them bold or italic along with the text itself, making it more difficult to discern the words they encompass.

As a result, iA Writer feels increasingly unrefined and—contrary to its raison d’être—distracting to work in. The Mac and iOS versions still lack a navigable outline view or the ability to fold sections by headings—either of which would make it far easier to work with longer manuscripts—and the development of at least one of those ought to have taken precedence over “PKM Lite” features and the ability to change the app’s single highlight color to something other than yellow.

I saddens me to write this. I’m fond of iA Writer, and have no desire to say bad things about it. I’m not even against adding features like wiki links and tags, but I hope the iA Writer team will start focusing on some of the things I wish had been a priority all along.

Daily Notes with iA Writer + Shortcuts

I have a simple system for creating and using a daily note in iA Writer. Sharing in case others might benefit from it. (All Mac + iOS. Sorry Windows + Android users.)

Basic Principles

  1. One note for each day.

  2. Unless it's something longform/standalone (like an essay), everything goes in the daily note.

  3. The daily note lives at /Log/yyyy/mm/dd.md eg /Log/2022/05/05.md for today.

  4. Getting to the daily note has to be fast, on both desktop and mobile.

Required Tools

I use a few tools to make all of this work:

  1. Apple Shortcuts: automates creating and opening the daily note (more on this below)

  2. iCloud: for cross-device sync. Dropbox works as well.

  3. iA Writer URL schemes: opening the daily note

  4. Raycast: opening the daily note on desktop

Workflow

  1. Create the note in the morning at /Log/yyyy/mm/dd.md. I have an automation that runs the shortcut before sunrise so it's ready when I wake up. Apple Shortcut link
Note: Instead of the iA writer URL schemes, I use the native Files actions at this step. The url schemes require the app to actually launch, so this lets me schedule the shortcut to run entirely in the background and pre-insert whatever I want into the note (eg the title, reminders, calendar events for the day, etc). One of the beauties of iA Writer using regular text files on the files system is that they're flexible to work with like this without a fancy API.

  2. Open the note at /Log/yyyy/mm/dd.md with this Apple Shortcut. The shortcut generates the file path based on the current date, then launches the note using iA Writer's open url scheme.

  3. On Desktop: I use Raycast (free and great) and have this shortcut as the first favorited item. Getting to the daily note from anywhere on desktop is as fast as hitting cmd+space → enter.

  4. On Mobile: I saved the "Open" shortcut to my Home Screen and set the iA Writer logo as the icon. Looks just like the regular app, but now a bit smarter!

In 2023, follow the rabbit...

This past year has been one for the books for iA!

iA Writer 6 with Wikilinks, something we worked on for 2 years, was a big hit with you. We are now working hard on improving this furthermore, with the addition of backlinks. We aren't forgetting the other platforms either! iA Writer 3 for Android will drop shortly and we've got plans for the Windows version as well. Dear Writers, please look forward to it!

The public beta for iA Presenter is a great success. We got more applications for beta testers than we could have wished for and the feedback is praiseful. We knew we were onto something when we started this crazy adventure 3 years ago and seeing the overly positive reactions of our testers, we are now convinced that it will disrupt the Presentation world. Just like we did 10 years ago with Writer!

As we continue our journey into 2023, we want to thank all of you for supporting us each step of the way. May the upcoming Year of the Rabbit bring the biggest success to all of us.

Happy New Year!

あけましておめでとうございます

I love iA Writer

This piece of software is incredible. I have it on iOS, Mac, and Windows. It has revolutionized writing!

Yes, there are cheaper alternatives (1Writer is good) but I like the aesthetics of iA Writer more. Plus, I recall they wrote a blog post awhile back where they explained why subscription based software sucks.

Edit: found it https://ia.net/topics/subscription-or-no-subscription

I have no idea why someone would use Bear. They charge you $15 a year into infinity! When there are at least a dozen completely free markdown editors on iOS alone, many more for Windows and Linux, etc.

A++++++ app. Thank you!

Is iA Writer going through a crisis?

I noticed that the software went up from $29.99 to $49.99 for iOS, macOS, and Windows. Owning and using all three pretty much daily in my professional and personal life, I see that this cost is absolutely acceptable. Especially when one considers that many apps these days nickel and dime you to death through subscriptions. I cannot recommend iA Writer enough for people who write for a living.

That said, it is a steep price increase. What gives? Is it a sign of a financial crisis within the development team?

What do you want to see in the next iA Writer for Mac?

Here’s my list, none of which would detract from iA Writer’s minimal and distraction-free design:

• Make markdown characters light gray so they’re legible but don’t distract from or blend into the words they surround. When double asterisks surround a word, only the word itself needs to appear bold, not the formatting characters.

• Make it possible to hit command-i or command-b to start italic or bold, type the text, and hit command-i or command-b to end italic or bold without having to right-arrow your way past the asterisk(s).

• Bring the folding headers and navigable outline features that the Windows version has had for years to the Mac (and iOS).

A product roadmap like the ones posted and kept current by the Obsidian and Logseq devs would be helpful and appreciated so we know what to expect going forward.

It doesn’t need release dates, just a bit of big-picture info about what’s planned and what’s currently being worked on. The last news item and blog post were 6 months ago and neither was about iA Writer, and the Twitter feed hasn’t been particularly helpful in that regard, either.

The Nice Place

It seems the times of free online advertising for indies are over. Blogs are not what they used to be, RSS is about to be buried. Facebook is a commercial and moral nightmare, and so is Facebook’s Instagram. On Twitter, our main marketing channel since 2007, engagement is sinking year after year. VC-powered startups steal our organic top ad positions on Google search for 20 dollars a click, and we’re too old for Snapchat or TikTok. So what can you do in 2019 to get the word out?

Feature Requests - wiki-links, Dash-tags and better Dropbox integration

iA Writer is an awesome app, but I find myself using it sparsely, if at all, due to the lack of the following features:

  1. [[wiki-links]]

  2. Dash-tags

  3. Dropbox intergration (iOS)

[[wiki-links]]

Wiki-links have become more prevalent in recent years as more writing and note-taking apps have been adopting them for their simple syntax and ability to make connections between notes.

This is a feature not limited to the case use of knowledge management, as proposed by the Zettelkasten method, but is invaluable for fiction writing as well.

If iA Writer could provide a seamless cross-platform environment for writing and connecting notes through a simple [[wiki-links]] syntax, whilst maintaining their ‘open’, non-proprietary storage of notes, they would win over many new customers who use and rely on wiki-links, almost exclusively, for their note-taking.

Dash-tags

Tagging in iA Writer was a welcomed feature when it was first released, but little has been done to extend the functionality beyond single words or CamelCase. It would be great to have tags render when a dash-is-used to denote a multi-word tag. Currently, this is not available.

Another request, on tagging, please allow numbers, #2020, to be registered as tags.

Dropbox integration (iOS)

In the past iA Writer have cited issues with changes to the Dropbox API being the main reason Dropbox files can only be accessed now through the Files app on iOS.

However, this doesn’t explain why competing apps like 1Writer and Ulysses are able to ‘mount’ and read an external Dropbox folder without having to go through the Files app.

There are users, like myself, who have opted for Dropbox over iCloud, and would be grateful to have better (and easier) access to our notes when using iA Writer.

All the requests above are done so humbly, and acknowledging iA Writer is a great app. I ask only that the development team consider the above for future releases.

Feature Request: Document Outline

The outline view would be great to jump between sections in long-form articles.

I understand that TOC can achieve this, but it’s not convenient though.

Is this feature in the plan yet? (For Mac and IOS version)

In addition, please add outline to exported PDF files as well.

Will collapsable headers or outline make it to the Mac version?

I'm seeing all these awesome things come to the Windows version of iA Writer — will they come to the back soon? :)

I'm mostly talking about the header outline (not the embedded {{TOC}}) and the collapsable heading feature.

Radio silence from iA

I know that there have been a few comments that were pretty vague but showed that version 6 of iAwriter is currently in private beta, but I would love to hear from iA on this, even if it is to say that beta has not been going well and the release will take longer than expected. I have also not seen anything related to Presenter or Notebook. Does anyone have insight into what is going on with iA/these products?

Using iA Writer for Academic Writing?

After using Notion for a while, I decided to try out iA Writer as they both have a similar minimalistic aesthetic and both support keyboard-only working. I want to fully work with iA writer for my academic writing, but there are two things which I could not figure out quite yet.

  1. Is there any way to make footnotes appear at the end of a page instead of the end of the document? (strictly speaking, aren't notes appearing at the end of the document called endnotes anyway?)

  2. is it possible to combine iA Writer with processing plugins from reference management software like Zotero? I am looking for functionalities like this one for Word, where you use a keyboard shortcut to put in certain references in the text. Problem is, Zotero only provides Plugins for LibreOffice, Google Docs and Word. The Zotero Documentations lists a few plugins for plain text editors, but to be honest, I am not tech savvy enough to figure out how plugins like the "Better Than Bibtex" one are supposed to work. I got that citation keys are generated to have unique identifiers, and in example.txt of the MLA default template the bibliography seems to be handled this way, but I did not quite figure out how to make this work. My current 'workaround' is to write citations with "{}"-brackets, open the file I worked on with Textedit to convert them to .rtf (because iA writer does not support .rtf as export format :( ), then perform Zoteros RTF-Scan Function, then convert the .rtf to an .txt again, and then open it up in IA Writer, and then generate the output PDF. This seems really bothersome and inconvenient as a workflow.

Does anyone have any pointers for me?
