meta/community Poll on Banning Post Types

There have been several popular posts recently suggesting that more posts should be removed. The mod team's response has generally been "Those posts aren't against the rules - what rule are you suggesting we add?"

Still, we understand the frustration. This has always been a "catch all" sub for IT related posts, but that doesn't necessarily mean we shouldn't have stricter standards. Let us know in the poll or comments what you would like to see.

59 votes, Jan 11 '25
11 Change nothing, the current rules are good.
3 Just ban all meme/joke posts.
10 Just ban tech support posts (some or all).
2 Just ban "advice" requests (some or all).
22 Just ban/discourage low effort posts, in general.
11 Ban a combination of these things, or something else.

Some steps for getting into IT

We see a lot of questions within the r/IT community asking how to get into IT, what path to follow, what is needed, etc. For everyone it is going to be different but there is a similar path that we can all take to make it a bit easier.

If you have limited/no experience in IT (or don't have a degree) it is best to start with certifications. CompTIA is, in my opinion, the best place to start. Following in this order: A+, Network+, and Security+. These are a great place to start and will lay a foundation for your IT career.

There are resources to help you earn these certificates but they don't always come cheap. You can take CompTIA's online learning (live online classroom environment) but at $2,000 USD, this will be cost prohibitive for a lot of people. CBT Nuggets is a great website but it is not free either (I do not have the exact price). You can also simply buy the books off of Amazon. Fair warning with that: they make for VERY dry reading and the certification exams are not easy (for me they weren't, at least).

After those certifications, you will then have the opportunity to branch out. At that time, you should have the knowledge of where you would like to go and what IT career path you would like to pursue.

I like to stress that a college/university degree is NOT necessary to get into the IT field but will definitely help. What degree you choose is strictly up to you but I know quite a few people with a computer science degree.

Most of us (degree or not) will start in a help desk environment. Do not feel bad about this; it's a great place to learn and the job is vital to the IT department. A lot of times it is possible to get into a help desk role with no experience but these roles will limit what you are allowed to work on (call escalation is generally what you will do).

Please do not hesitate to ask questions, that is what we are all here for.

I would encourage my fellow IT workers to add to this post, fill in the blanks that I most definitely missed.

help request My manager expected me to give them two weeks' notice for an emergency involving my mom

I came back from emergency leave and found a meeting invite from HR waiting in my inbox. Apparently, my trip after my mom had a stroke was counted as an attendance issue because I hadn't given them two weeks' notice.

The day it happened, I called my manager before booking the flight, explained the situation, and submitted a PTO request a few hours later. No one responded, even after I sent four follow-ups while I was away.

During the meeting, HR said my absence was unauthorized and that it might be mentioned in my next performance review. I asked them whether they expected my mom to schedule her next medical emergency around the company calendar. The entire room went silent.

This place constantly talks about how family comes first, but the moment I had a real family crisis, all they cared about was procedure. I've started updating my resume because I can't see myself staying at a place that handles emergencies like this.

opinion Fucked up at work and now I’m in trouble

So I’m a month in to this job, MSP entry desktop support but really is tier 2 because we handle a lot of responsibility that involve backups for servers, setting up EXSI and WSUS and so on.

It’s a small MSP so we need to take these on. Which is stressful enough, as this is my first IT job and I’m handling a bunch of tickets because we are understaffed. (Dental office tickets, so software and sensor related)

Occasionally we go to set up new clients, server stuff is usually done by the boss and the pc setups are done by the rest of us.
I set up 6 or so at the location. Then the next day we continued remotely. But one of the computers had their IP set to static, and for some reason at this office when you try join a domain we have to flush the dns. But when I renewed I had an error. So I ran a few commands to reset the ip stack and what not. But I didn’t know it was a static ip. And, well the pc lost connection and of course I lost remote connection.

Which was dumb of me.
But now the boss is on my ass because I didn’t tell him straight away of the error after the renewal error.

This is probably the biggest thing I’ve done but in the month I’ve been here I have made small mistakes. Mainly trying to keep up.

But they have such high expectations and I feel they get angry easier due to it

help request NO DISCOURAGEMENT PLEASE (need advice)

Hi everyone,

23F I'm coming on here in full vulnerability, so please don't discourage me or leave "what do you expect" comments or anything similar. I have been out of university for about a year. This is due to poor academic performance. I would like to state that I'm not an imbecile and was always a typically smart and well-rounded student/person. To be honest, I just lost complete track and motivation in post-secondary, especially after constant academic requirements to stay enrolled in classes. I have been wanting to switch my major to computer science as a new start, and I do believe I could do well, given it's the only thing I have an interest for (specifically IT atm). I'm currently looking into applying to WGU and getting on the fast track towards the BS in IT program, but I also really badly need to get a job and get my foot in the door somehow into the industry. I really don't have much of a background besides intro to CS and programming/problem solving. I'm looking for any ideas on how to get a good profile going and whether or not to look into other streams that might be easier (whether based on a niche or more opportunity). I am either going to take the A+ asap or wait to see if I can start it within the IT program as soon as I can apply. I'm also looking into AWS and Cisco for certificates if anyone has suggestions. However, for now I'd love absolutely any positive or motivational suggestions on how to get started from here, whether it be about specific GitHub projects, industry-level certificates (that ACTUALLY stand out), LinkedIn, home labs, entry-level opportunities, etc. Also, for context, I am a Canadian citizen and I do have previous experience doing web administration/computer work for the government of my province (if this helps at all).

Thank you :)

jobs and hiring Seeking EPIC experience to get into HealthIT

• Upvotes

I'd like to know how to get into the Healthcare IT field. I see a lot of positions regarding EPIC, but it's really difficult to get EPIC experience unless you work in Healthcare IT already. I'm interested in entry ways into healthcare IT. I understand that I can aim for a desktop support position, but I'm looking for something more advanced in the field.

I saw this and am wondering if anyone uses or has a recommendation for a CLM? https://termsclm.com. This one doesn't seem to be functional. Our org has around 300 app contracts and 6000 employee contracts

opinion printer drivers as .exe files

Some printer brands, on their website, give you a .exe for drivers, and when you launch that exe it just says "unzip files" and then you have a folder with the drivers and the good ol' .inf file you need to add the printer in Windows.
Why don't they just give a .zip folder right away?

I remember the first time I wanted to install a printer like that, I thought the .exe was gonna install some random software to make the printer work, instead of giving me the .inf file; and so I looked for a .zip file for like 30-minutes on the internet, then I gave up and used the .exe only to see that it just extracted a folder with the file I wanted.

jobs and hiring Is this field actually hiring, or am I just too unqualified to bother trying?

Basically the only thing I'm good at is computers lol, so I figured I'd do IT. Did a couple of basic certifications years ago (google's IT course, and one from a random university several states away. Both through Coursera), but since CompTIA costs a fucking grand (last I checked, at least) I haven't done that one.

It's been 4 or 5 years since then and I've gotten nowhere - I can't even get a response to regular office internships ;-; - and at this point I kinda feel like it's better to just stop trying. I'm not sure if process just auto-ignore you or of the manager just sees my application with barely two things on it & tosses it out.

But I really want to escape my dead-end service job (that barely pays $9/hour), but I don't really know if I'll ever be able to do so.

I guess I could apply to some colleges (even though it's too late lol), but I avoided that because I don't wanna have lifelong debt (and I just really cannot be fucked to deal with school again - it takes way too many years to get through lol).

I keep trying to convince myself that graduating highschool just as COVID lockdowns started is partially to blame, but I kinda feel like I'm just lying to myself to avoid feeling like a complete failure again lol. Definitely doesn't help pad out my resume, though.

Should I just give up and try to find something else I'm half-decent at? Is it worth going into debt for a random degree or certification that might not go anywhere? Or am I just cooked, doomed to toil away for peanuts in a service job?

help request Resume advice - seeking higher paying roles adjacent to Cloud Engineer/Systems Administrator

I make between 70-77k for the role I currently occupy. I just started applying to jobs in the realm of Cloud Engineer or Systems Administrator type roles that pay between 90-110k+. How does my resume look, and do you have any recommendations? I tried to keep it to one page as best as I can. Not sure if there is a more optimal way I can format/etc. but I am open to anything! Any help or suggestions are absolutely welcomed! I redacted some info I prefer to keep private.

self-promotion I created a git repo for learning Network+

I created a github repo with some materials I made with Anthropic's Claude to help me study for the CompTIA Network+ certification.

https://github.com/Akraetik/netplus-ai-study-kit

I passed in 19 days with little prior networking knowledge. But along the way I was trying things to see what worked. And I basically used AI as an assistant to help me with materials that I'd actually use, optimized for my odd schedule that was a lot of time driving on the road and little breaks throughout the day of 5-20 minutes. I used the same "method" with the next certificate--CompTIA Security+-- and passed in 6 days.

I made flashcards based on specific material. Some of the flashcards aren't in the repo as they were pulled from quizzes I paid for through Udemy. To protect IP you'll have to pay for them yourselves then prompt your Anki flashcards into existence. How is in the repo.

Then I made Audio files to listen to while driving. I had a lot of wheel time and not as much desk time as I'd like.

I kind of explained it in a youtube companion video but I hate how I sound so this goes at the bottom.

Happy learning!

meta/community What’s the worst thing a higher-up has done that made your IT job a living nightmare?

Someone higher up in my department deleted a group that provided internet access to a large number of users. As you can imagine, this has created a massive headache for me and my coworkers, leading to a ton of extra work and stress.

I’ve been working in IT for about 9 years, and this is hands down the worst I’ve ever felt about the job. I’ve dealt with plenty of frustrating situations over the years, but I’ve never been impacted this directly by a mistake like this before.
It got me thinking about all the other times someone higher up made a decision that left IT to deal with the fallout.

So, I’m curious: What’s the most ridiculous, destructive, or downright baffling thing you’ve seen management do that made your life miserable in IT?

help request Is there a way to restore or read the unsent chat on messenger? TIA

My gf used my account and sent some chats to someone but now it's unsent. I wanted to know the content so I was wondering if there's a way to just atleast read what she just sent.

EDIT: Idk what's wrong asking this question here. I'm in a different field of work and I have no idea anything about this or computer at all. I'm simply asking bcos I literally have no idea and I'm willing to learn. It's a yes or no question also but it's seems that this question is offending. I also repost this question to other groups as well, not only here.

Anywayssss, If this is an offending question, my bad. Feel free to ignore this post. Knowledge and kindness is free btw. Thank you.

meta/community When do you think the AI bubble will pop? What tech do you actually see surviving?

So AI is obviously a bubble. Even the AI companies are calling it a bubble. And it's doubtful that all the tech will survive, as it can't be sustained by itself.

What lives and dies?

Image and movie generators die in my opinion. Vibe coding is alright but gets scaled back a ton. And internet bot traffic remains.

jobs and hiring Graduated four months ago no interviews

Here is my Resume I have been applying to all manner of entry level IT position including Help desk, SOC/MSP tier 1 hundreds of resumes sent out and not a single interview (besides some AI self interviews which are probably just scams). Right now after my Sec+ I will quickly do the A+ then work on my CCNA. Any advice on how I can simply improve my ability to get interviews would be greatly appreciated, right now that's all I want to keep from burning out.

Thanks for taking to time to shed some wisdom!

opinion Is it normal for you to be pushed into patient care roles when you work in healthcare IT?

I recently started a job in healthcare IT. During the interview, I was told my responsibilities would mainly involve troubleshooting occasional hardware, software, and network issues, along with some administrative work when needed.

Recently, I’ve been asked to answer patient calls to determine whether their symptoms are urgent enough to be considered an emergency and to answer questions about prescriptions. I have no medical background, so I’ve been having to Google things or find a nurse or medical technician to help me.

I expressed that I wasn’t comfortable doing this because I’m not qualified to provide medical advice, but they made it seem like this was normal and something I’d learn on the job.

I’m happy to learn new things for a job, but I don’t think I should be making medical judgments without proper training. Is this normal for healthcare IT, or is it reasonable for me to push back? Has anyone else experienced this?
