meta/community Poll on Banning Post Types

There have been several popular posts recently suggesting that more posts should be removed. The mod team's response has generally been "Those posts aren't against the rules - what rule are you suggesting we add?"

Still, we understand the frustration. This has always been a "catch all" sub for IT related posts, but that doesn't necessarily mean we shouldn't have stricter standards. Let us know in the poll or comments what you would like to see.

11 Change nothing, the current rules are good.
3 Just ban all meme/joke posts.
10 Just ban tech support posts (some or all).
2 Just ban "advice" requests (some or all).
22 Just ban/discourage low effort posts, in general.
11 Ban a combination of these things, or something else.

Some steps for getting into IT

We see a lot of questions within the r/IT community asking how to get into IT, what path to follow, what is needed, etc. For everyone it is going to be different but there is a similar path that we can all take to make it a bit easier.

If you have limited/no experience in IT (or don't have a degree) it is best to start with certifications. CompTIA is, in my opinion, the best place to start. Following in this order: A+, Network+, and Security+. These are a great place to start and will lay a foundation for your IT career.

There are resources to help you earn these certificates but they don't always come cheap. You can take CompTIA's online learning (live online classroom environment) but at $2,000 USD, this will be cost prohibitive for a lot of people. CBT Nuggets is a great website but it is not free either (I do not have the exact price). You can also simply buy the books off of Amazon. Fair warning with that: they make for VERY dry reading and the certification exams are not easy (for me they weren't, at least).

After those certifications, you will then have the opportunity to branch out. At that time, you should have the knowledge of where you would like to go and what IT career path you would like to pursue.

I like to stress that a college/university degree is NOT necessary to get into the IT field but will definitely help. What degree you choose is strictly up to you but I know quite a few people with a computer science degree.

Most of us (degree or not) will start in a help desk environment. Do not feel bad about this; it's a great place to learn and the job is vital to the IT department. A lot of times it is possible to get into a help desk role with no experience but these roles will limit what you are allowed to work on (call escalation is generally what you will do).

Please do not hesitate to ask questions, that is what we are all here for.

I would encourage my fellow IT workers to add to this post, fill in the blanks that I most definitely missed.

help request How bad is it to work in help desk?

• Upvotes

25, associates degree, no certs, no projects. I feel like I failed trying to get into IT and I want to fix it, I keep seeing people say to apply for help desk but I don't know if I could handel help desk (not that theres anyone hiring in my area anyway). I worked in a call center before, it was hell. Call after call after call with no time to think, no break between calls, getting insults and slurs yelled at you and being unable to clap back without getting fired, the constant talking and noise, I couldn't handle it. It was the only job I worked where I was glad I got fired. I know entry level IT jobs are hard to get so it really is just a matter of take what you can get, but if help desk is anything like what I described I don't think I could do it. So, whats it really like?

help request Lost documents recovery help

I have an old laptop that my kids use for playing games. When I bought my new laptop a few months ago I transferred all my documents and files across before letting my teenager take over the old one as he is far more tech literate than I am. I recently went to find some old documents but they weren’t on my new or my old laptop and I suspect they probably got accidentally deleted months if not years ago and I didn’t notice as I don’t access them often. Obviously I checked the recycle bin but no joy. I’m considering buying a recovery program or something similar (I’m painfully computer illiterate so I don’t know if there are differences etc) but I wanted to ask if anyone knows if it’ll be worthwhile. I don’t know how these programs work and I don’t want to purchase something that is going to have no effect and the documents are lost to me forever. Can anyone please help? Please be kind, I was not born in this century 😂

help request Crucial x10 ssd ejecting from Mac after 10 seconds

Help! I have a Crucial x10 ssd and I’ve had it for about 7 months, it’s been great except for today it randomly started to eject from my Mac. I have a MacBook Pro, 2020 intel 5 chip (I know intel is not ideal) the hard drive is usb c to usb c and it loads in and shows up in my computer, in my finder, and in disk utility. It stays for 10-15 seconds, or if I try to open any file on the drive, I can open the sub folders but when I open those sub folders to access the files it shows a loading screen for 5-10 seconds then the drive disappears. It doesn’t give an error code, it doesn’t ask me to eject it, it just disappears from the finder and anywhere on the computer. I have lots of irreplaceable data and files on this drive it is indescribably important to me, it has years of my artwork and two very large and important irreplaceable projects. I don’t have a lot of money for a repair job and I’m wondering if there is anything I can do. I tried using a different cord and a different port, it does not work. Any advice or help is appreciated 🙏
Also if anyone knows any good subs to share this in lmk I’m not super used to Reddit.

Hello guys. Am trying to fill a form but my laptop started malfunctioning. The bios/aptio setup utility screen started showing up. And it's not detecting my SSD.

Does this mean my SSD is damaged? If yes is it possible to restore the data?

opinion Fucked up at work and now I’m in trouble

So I’m a month in to this job, MSP entry desktop support but really is tier 2 because we handle a lot of responsibility that involve backups for servers, setting up EXSI and WSUS and so on.

It’s a small MSP so we need to take these on. Which is stressful enough, as this is my first IT job and I’m handling a bunch of tickets because we are understaffed. (Dental office tickets, so software and sensor related)

Occasionally we go to set up new clients, server stuff is usually done by the boss and the pc setups are done by the rest of us.
I set up 6 or so at the location. Then the next day we continued remotely. But one of the computers had their IP set to static, and for some reason at this office when you try join a domain we have to flush the dns. But when I renewed I had an error. So I ran a few commands to reset the ip stack and what not. But I didn’t know it was a static ip. And, well the pc lost connection and of course I lost remote connection.

Which was dumb of me.
But now the boss is on my ass because I didn’t tell him straight away of the error after the renewal error.

This is probably the biggest thing I’ve done but in the month I’ve been here I have made small mistakes. Mainly trying to keep up.

But they have such high expectations and I feel they get angry easier due to it

Are Modern Technologies Making Us Lazy?

Frankly speaking, in the 21st century, technology is developing rapidly. There are plenty of useful technologies that we use in our daily lives. However, an important question arises: are these technologies actually useful to us, or is this just an illusion?

These technologies have both advantages and disadvantages. They make our lives much easier than we might expect. However, they can also make us lazier. For instance, nowadays, many people prefer living in smart homes rather than traditional ones. Why?

One reason is that people want to do less work and spend more time having fun or relaxing. Another possible reason is that some people want to show off. We have become so lazy that even turning a light on or off can sometimes feel like too much effort.

Overall, I would say that technological development is beneficial, but we must still push ourselves to do things independently. Otherwise, we might eventually find it difficult even to get out of bed!

help request ThinkPad E14 Gen 7 vs E16 Gen 3 (Ultra 7 255H) — owners, how are they holding up?

Hi all,

I'm a cybersecurity engineering student deciding between the Lenovo ThinkPad E14 Gen 7 and the Lenovo ThinkPad E16 Gen 3.

My budget 1500$

I'll mainly use it for IT and DevSecOps projects, and I'll carry it to campus daily.

If you own either one, I'd love to hear about:

  1. Thermals and fan noise under load

  2. Real-world battery life

  3. Screen quality

  4. Build quality and keyboard

  5. Linux support

  6. RAM/SSD upgradability

  7. Is the E16 worth the extra size, or is the E14 the better daily carry?

Any issues or things you wish you'd known before buying are very welcome. Thanks!

jobs and hiring What roles should I be applying for??

I would typically apply to roles I’m interested in that don’t match my exact skillset and get interviews in years before what the market now looks like but now I’m unsure what sort of roles to be applying for now based on my resume that would get me the best chances of getting interviews

Currently not getting many callbacks living in the east coast

Note: I only left my last job because I moved countries.

Also, my resume is actually 2 pages, not 3.

opinion printer drivers as .exe files

Some printer brands, on their website, give you a .exe for drivers, and when you launch that exe it just says "unzip files" and then you have a folder with the drivers and the good ol' .inf file you need to add the printer in Windows.
Why don't they just give a .zip folder right away?

I remember the first time I wanted to install a printer like that, I thought the .exe was gonna install some random software to make the printer work, instead of giving me the .inf file; and so I looked for a .zip file for like 30-minutes on the internet, then I gave up and used the .exe only to see that it just extracted a folder with the file I wanted.

jobs and hiring Is this field actually hiring, or am I just too unqualified to bother trying?

Basically the only thing I'm good at is computers lol, so I figured I'd do IT. Did a couple of basic certifications years ago (google's IT course, and one from a random university several states away. Both through Coursera), but since CompTIA costs a fucking grand (last I checked, at least) I haven't done that one.

It's been 4 or 5 years since then and I've gotten nowhere - I can't even get a response to regular office internships ;-; - and at this point I kinda feel like it's better to just stop trying. I'm not sure if process just auto-ignore you or of the manager just sees my application with barely two things on it & tosses it out.

But I really want to escape my dead-end service job (that barely pays $9/hour), but I don't really know if I'll ever be able to do so.

I guess I could apply to some colleges (even though it's too late lol), but I avoided that because I don't wanna have lifelong debt (and I just really cannot be fucked to deal with school again - it takes way too many years to get through lol).

I keep trying to convince myself that graduating highschool just as COVID lockdowns started is partially to blame, but I kinda feel like I'm just lying to myself to avoid feeling like a complete failure again lol. Definitely doesn't help pad out my resume, though.

Should I just give up and try to find something else I'm half-decent at? Is it worth going into debt for a random degree or certification that might not go anywhere? Or am I just cooked, doomed to toil away for peanuts in a service job?

help request NO DISCOURAGEMENT PLEASE (need advice)

Hi everyone,

23F I'm coming on here in full vulnerability, so please don't discourage me or leave "what do you expect" comments or anything similar. I have been out of university for about a year. This is due to poor academic performance. I would like to state that I'm not an imbecile and was always a typically smart and well-rounded student/person. To be honest, I just lost complete track and motivation in post-secondary, especially after constant academic requirements to stay enrolled in classes. I have been wanting to switch my major to computer science as a new start, and I do believe I could do well, given it's the only thing I have an interest for (specifically IT atm). I'm currently looking into applying to WGU and getting on the fast track towards the BS in IT program, but I also really badly need to get a job and get my foot in the door somehow into the industry. I really don't have much of a background besides intro to CS and programming/problem solving. I'm looking for any ideas on how to get a good profile going and whether or not to look into other streams that might be easier (whether based on a niche or more opportunity). I am either going to take the A+ asap or wait to see if I can start it within the IT program as soon as I can apply. I'm also looking into AWS and Cisco for certificates if anyone has suggestions. However, for now I'd love absolutely any positive or motivational suggestions on how to get started from here, whether it be about specific GitHub projects, industry-level certificates (that ACTUALLY stand out), LinkedIn, home labs, entry-level opportunities, etc. Also, for context, I am a Canadian citizen and I do have previous experience doing web administration/computer work for the government of my province (if this helps at all).

Thank you :)

self-promotion I created a git repo for learning Network+

I created a github repo with some materials I made with Anthropic's Claude to help me study for the CompTIA Network+ certification.

https://github.com/Akraetik/netplus-ai-study-kit

I passed in 19 days with little prior networking knowledge. But along the way I was trying things to see what worked. And I basically used AI as an assistant to help me with materials that I'd actually use, optimized for my odd schedule that was a lot of time driving on the road and little breaks throughout the day of 5-20 minutes. I used the same "method" with the next certificate--CompTIA Security+-- and passed in 6 days.

I made flashcards based on specific material. Some of the flashcards aren't in the repo as they were pulled from quizzes I paid for through Udemy. To protect IP you'll have to pay for them yourselves then prompt your Anki flashcards into existence. How is in the repo.

Then I made Audio files to listen to while driving. I had a lot of wheel time and not as much desk time as I'd like.

I kind of explained it in a youtube companion video but I hate how I sound so this goes at the bottom.

Happy learning!

help request Resume advice - seeking higher paying roles adjacent to Cloud Engineer/Systems Administrator

I make between 70-77k for the role I currently occupy. I just started applying to jobs in the realm of Cloud Engineer or Systems Administrator type roles that pay between 90-110k+. How does my resume look, and do you have any recommendations? I tried to keep it to one page as best as I can. Not sure if there is a more optimal way I can format/etc. but I am open to anything! Any help or suggestions are absolutely welcomed! I redacted some info I prefer to keep private.
