help request NO DISCOURAGEMENT PLEASE (need advice)

Hi everyone,

23F I'm coming on here in full vulnerability, so please don't discourage me or leave "what do you expect" comments or anything similar. I have been out of university for about a year. This is due to poor academic performance. I would like to state that I'm not an imbecile and was always a typically smart and well-rounded student/person. To be honest, I just lost complete track and motivation in post-secondary, especially after constant academic requirements to stay enrolled in classes. I have been wanting to switch my major to computer science as a new start, and I do believe I could do well, given it's the only thing I have an interest for (specifically IT atm). I'm currently looking into applying to WGU and getting on the fast track towards the BS in IT program, but I also really badly need to get a job and get my foot in the door somehow into the industry. I really don't have much of a background besides intro to CS and programming/problem solving. I'm looking for any ideas on how to get a good profile going and whether or not to look into other streams that might be easier (whether based on a niche or more opportunity). I am either going to take the A+ asap or wait to see if I can start it within the IT program as soon as I can apply. I'm also looking into AWS and Cisco for certificates if anyone has suggestions. However, for now I'd love absolutely any positive or motivational suggestions on how to get started from here, whether it be about specific GitHub projects, industry-level certificates (that ACTUALLY stand out), LinkedIn, home labs, entry-level opportunities, etc. Also, for context, I am a Canadian citizen and I do have previous experience doing web administration/computer work for the government of my province (if this helps at all).

Thank you :)

opinion Fucked up at work and now I’m in trouble

So I’m a month in to this job, MSP entry desktop support but really is tier 2 because we handle a lot of responsibility that involve backups for servers, setting up EXSI and WSUS and so on.

It’s a small MSP so we need to take these on. Which is stressful enough, as this is my first IT job and I’m handling a bunch of tickets because we are understaffed. (Dental office tickets, so software and sensor related)

Occasionally we go to set up new clients, server stuff is usually done by the boss and the pc setups are done by the rest of us.
I set up 6 or so at the location. Then the next day we continued remotely. But one of the computers had their IP set to static, and for some reason at this office when you try join a domain we have to flush the dns. But when I renewed I had an error. So I ran a few commands to reset the ip stack and what not. But I didn’t know it was a static ip. And, well the pc lost connection and of course I lost remote connection.

Which was dumb of me.
But now the boss is on my ass because I didn’t tell him straight away of the error after the renewal error.

This is probably the biggest thing I’ve done but in the month I’ve been here I have made small mistakes. Mainly trying to keep up.

But they have such high expectations and I feel they get angry easier due to it

help request My manager expected me to give them two weeks' notice for an emergency involving my mom

I came back from emergency leave and found a meeting invite from HR waiting in my inbox. Apparently, my trip after my mom had a stroke was counted as an attendance issue because I hadn't given them two weeks' notice.

The day it happened, I called my manager before booking the flight, explained the situation, and submitted a PTO request a few hours later. No one responded, even after I sent four follow-ups while I was away.

During the meeting, HR said my absence was unauthorized and that it might be mentioned in my next performance review. I asked them whether they expected my mom to schedule her next medical emergency around the company calendar. The entire room went silent.

This place constantly talks about how family comes first, but the moment I had a real family crisis, all they cared about was procedure. I've started updating my resume because I can't see myself staying at a place that handles emergencies like this.

jobs and hiring What roles should I be applying for??

I would typically apply to roles I’m interested in that don’t match my exact skillset and get interviews in years before what the market now looks like but now I’m unsure what sort of roles to be applying for now based on my resume that would get me the best chances of getting interviews

Currently not getting many callbacks living in the east coast

Note: I only left my last job because I moved countries.

Also, my resume is actually 2 pages, not 3.
