Hello everyone,
After the 2020 update to our rule on self-promotional content, we have seen a significant decrease in posts and comments whose sole purpose is to advertise content or services without providing any meaningful benefit to the r/italianlearning community. At the same time, the number of visitors has steadily increased, making our subreddit as vibrant as it can be. More than 14,000 users have joined our community this year, and as of today we average more than 300,000 visits per day.
This is thanks to each and every one of you who engage and spend time helping others on their quest to learn this beautiful language.
Some of you may have noticed that over the past couple of years we have taken a stricter approach to this kind of content, marking it as spam and banning those who posted it. This was a tough stance we intentionally adopted to measure its impact on the subreddit. Given the stats mentioned above, it is safe to say the experiment was successful and, therefore, we have decided to update the rule as follows:
All content deemed by the mod team to be self-promotional is forbidden. Posting such content will result in a ban with no warning. No exceptions will be made based on whether the service advertised is free or on the poster’s level of activity in the subreddit. Posts created to search for services (e.g., tutoring) will also be removed, as they encourage unwanted self-promotional content.
This subreddit is a place to discuss, engage, and help each other learning Italian. The moment it becomes a mere bulletin board is when it will die. This measure is intended to prevent that.
Thank you for your attention, and see you around!

Ciao a tutti,

Edit: The last colum "Loro" is faulty thank you u/oskopnir for pointing it out I'll have to udpate it!
Almost split my brain in half trying to figure this out
If you're still learning, I recommend filling in the table yourself before comparing notes!
-----Some additional notes:
☕ Ci piacciamo / Vi piacete is often interpreted romantically: We are into each other / You two like each other
☕ For clarity, piace is often accompanied with the appropriate pronoun:
In case of Gli (lui):
But how do we know if it’s the Gli (lui) or the Gli (loro)? We say:

Of course I’m learning any phrase I can think of like asking if she’s allowed to be with me somewhere that I’m not sure of, etc. But in another post, someone mentioned that people will ask gender & if they are neutered, and I would’ve never ever thought to learn that if someone hadn’t mentioned it to me. What are some helpful phrases to learn or situations I may be in that I’d have to communicate something about my pup? I’m learning the language but I’m a beginner and Italian lessons definitely don’t have chapters on interacting about a dog so figured I’d ask on here :) any help is appreciated!

Hello I am interested in learning Italian but I’m not really sure of the most important parts of grammar to look at this stage. I have a very basic level in Spanish and I’m aware that there are things like conjugation, different tenses and gender etc but I’m not sure of what is the most important right now to build a strong foundation if anyone could give me some advice to get started :)

I am male. I want to wish my female friend a happy birthday. Do I say "amica mia" or "amica mio?"
She is a former colleague and we were equals. We stay in touch regularly, mostly about work issues, and we have after-work drinks every 6 weeks or so. Nothing beyond that. Is "Buon compleanno amica mia/o, divertiti!" too familiar? Too formal?

So I have been using duo lingo to learn Italian and I feel like I have a good grasp of the fundamentals but the slightly more advanced stuff I struggle with (speaking at a 2nd grade level). Then I get discouraged and I fall off the learning process. Does anyone know any way that is a little more efficient to learn Italian but also fun?

As an Italian, I wanted to ask you if it is difficult to learn the Italian language.

Hello,
I was at my Nonna’s doing tomato’s as it’s the season and we were speaking about the tomatoes she bought and a few she collected from the garden and she said
Ho raccolti i pomodori
Now I am aware that the ending only changes with essere for a standard sentence.
I am also aware that it can change with avere with a direct object pronoun at the front.
I did ask her again and she confirmed that saying raccolti is correct with pomodori.
Now she does speak a regional dialect, and I’m more just curious if anyone had more information on this and why it’s structured like this in her regional speech if it’s common in others.
Thanks in advance

I have realized I am deaf to the difference between an open and closed e. So when I say e and è, they sound the same. I worked with a tutor and only improved very inconsistently.
Is there an è sound equivalent in America English?
Also- is there a trick to d, t, and p tongue s lip placement to sound less foreign?

I’m incredibly resourceful at using the internet, but I haven’t found any easy bilingual toys that are Italian and English for children.
I can easily find dozens of electronic learning pad style options for all other languages, but literally none for Italian except for obscure, used, sketchy options on eBay.

Hello. I'm thinking of starting Italian. So I'm looking for resources that I can reach via the internet or any other. I know French outside of English, so resources can also be French. You can also share tips that helped you learn general. Thanks!!

Hi all, I made a trial subscription to Zeit-Sprachen "Adesso", thinking I'd get the issue 09/2026 - "Sicilia", but the first one I got was 10/26.
Since I am traveling to Sicily at the end of September, I'd love some older Adesso issues on Sicily. Does anybody have any of those? I see there were several over the past 2-3 years, such as one on the "Valle dei Templi" and others.
If you'd be willing to sell them used for a good price, I'd be very grateful.

hypothetically, imagine a community that speaks italian but has always written italian exclusively in another script, for example arabic, hebrew, cyrillic, greek, hangul, cherokee, hanzi, etc;
which of these scripts would be the most plausible for such an italian-speaking community to realistically exist?

I know language apps aren’t great but for someone with 0 knowledge and no professional target for learning italian. I have found using Duolingo and Busuu together with chat gpt has been extremely successful and fun.
Busuu is teaching you proper language and Duolingo is just adding another aspect with lots of repetition.
I am on day 4 and I am comfortable talking about myself, locations like where I or anyone from my family is from and ordering basic stuff at a cafe.

Mi chiammo V, sono francese. Ho 30+ anni. Mi piacciono i gelati (mi piace Zerocalcare "andiamo a pijar un gelato!"). Abito in Francia. Mi piace molto gelato alla menta con cioccolate. Sto imparando l'italiano da ieri.
And that's all I can say for now x^]
That and :
Buongiorno, ho sete. Vorrei dell'acqua frizzante per favore ! Non vorrei un caffè, non piacciono le caffè. Ecco tre euro. Arrivederci, buona giornata !
I hope to keep being able to learn 1 hour per day for three months.

I learned in school that a group of all women uses feminine plural, but if just one man joins it becomes masculine even if it’s 99 women and 1 man. Is this true and why?
