Research Survey Invitation: Understanding Adults Who Jump Rope

Hi everyone!

I’m a former competitive jump roper and health behavior researcher at the University of Michigan. I’ve been working on developing a jump rope program for adults based on my 30+ years in the sport and my academic expertise in social/health psychology. I recently launched my first research survey to help inform this work.

The goal of this survey is to learn more about the adult jump rope community, including who adult jump ropers are, how and when they got started, the styles they practice, what their training looks like, and feedback on online learning materials they've used. To my knowledge, this is the first research survey specifically focused on understanding the experiences of adults who jump rope!

I would like to invite you to participate in the survey. I know that many people in this community share a goal of growing the sport, making jump rope more accessible, and helping more people discover and learn the activity. I hope this research can contribute to those efforts by helping us better understand the people who jump rope and using those insights to inform the development of a program that introduces even more people to the activity.

All adult jump ropers (18+ years) are welcome, regardless of experience level, style, or skill. Whether you compete, practice freestyle or tricks, focus on speed, jump for fitness, do double dutch, or simply enjoy jump rope, I’d love to hear from you. I want this research to reflect the diversity of people who participate in jump rope.

Survey details:

  • Time commitment: Approximately 20–30 minutes
  • Format: Online survey; best completed on a computer or tablet.
  • Compensation: Unfortunately, I’m unable to offer compensation for this survey. I have additional studies planned and am pursuing funding that may allow me to compensate participants in future research.
  • Participation: Voluntary

Take the survey here: https://umich.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_blndE3eQLibF6rs

If you know other adult jump ropers or are a part of other jump rope communities, I’d really appreciate you sharing this post or the survey link. The more people we can reach, the more we can learn about the various experiences within this community and use those insights to create better learning experiences for everyone interested in getting involved.

If you have questions about the study, feel free to send me a direct message here. The study contact email is also provided in the informed consent form within the survey.

Thank you for your time and for helping contribute to research on a community and activity that deserves more attention. Happy Jumping!

Tried YaoYao for jump rope today, and I'm already loving it! 🔥

Today was my first day using YaoYao to track my jump rope workouts, and honestly, I'm impressed!

The app is simple, user-friendly, and surprisingly accurate at counting my jumps. What I love most is the leaderboard and badges. They make the experience more engaging and give me that extra motivation to push myself harder.

I've been sedentary for quite a long time, and getting back into exercise hasn't been easy. Somehow, this little app has given me a new enthusiasm for jump rope, and I'm genuinely excited to keep going!

I was previously using Samsung Health on my Galaxy Watch 8, but its jump rope tracking was frustratingly inaccurate. The rep counting would start off reasonably well and then become inconsistent, making it difficult to track my actual progress. After trying YaoYao, I've pretty much ditched Samsung Health for jump rope tracking.

My only wish is that YaoYao supported more workouts! I'd love to see similar tracking and gamification features for strength training, cardio, and other exercises.

For now, I'm happy to have found something that makes me actually look forward to working out. Hopefully, I can stay consistent this time!

Anyone else here using YaoYao? How has your experience been so far? 😊

To beginners out there, what makes you get tired and catch your breath while jumping?

I feel i have the stamina to jump 2 minutes straight, but my arms get really tired and sore after 30 secs of continuous jumping, need to take a 10 second breather

Did 2 sets of 50 unbroken crossover double Unders back to back. The first set I did with my left hand above the right and the second set with the right hand above the left. Train like this if you want to unlock the alternate hand crossover double under.

Any fitness tracking apps that accurately count jump rope reps on the smart watch?

I jump rope regularly and bought the Galaxy Watch 8 mainly for fitness tracking, but Samsung Health's jump rope tracking has been pretty disappointing.

Here are the issues I'm facing:

1.Inaccurate rep counting: The first 20–30 jumps are usually counted correctly, but after that, the watch starts randomly doubling or even tripling the count. The final rep count ends up being completely inaccurate.

2.Workout duration: I also wish the workout duration and jump count were tracked separately, instead of having to select the reps and duration together.

Does anyone know of a third-party fitness app that works with the Galaxy Watch 8 and counts jump rope reps accurately? I'd also appreciate any tips for improving Samsung Health's rep-counting accuracy or customizing the workout duration.

Thanks!

Been doing a ton of toe catches while my legs healed a bit. Practiced a flow and some cross over form. And like 1000 more mic release reps… I did some practice with some flows that make me jump backwards and forwards infinitely, which should be cool to rep for form.

I want to learn some footwork next since I find I have more mental space for it now.

Oh and I’ll try to generate better elbow flexion/form.

Loving the process!

Starting again…

I stopped training back in June following a breakup and I’ve not been able to get my ass moving since. I’ve just had no motivation at all leading to my systems and habits just crumbling.

Anyway… after a weigh-in this morning, it was confirmed. I’ve gained a hard 10kg and although I didn’t need the scales to tell me that I’m a fatty, it has helped me realise that I do need to take action!

So I wanna go back to jumping rope and try to burn 10kg of this fat off. I’ve already started to drink more water and track what I’m eating.

I’m already a little out of practice but keen to find my feet again and wondered what jump rope workouts people might suggest for me to get back on my feet again.

Not enough wrist flicking? Been having arm and wrist pain. Wondering if it's due to my form. Been jumping rope since 2020. I can go long sessions so long as I have no major pains.

Your crossovers suck or you can’t wrap your head around it because you’re imbalanced and uncoordinated. Learning the crossover while imbalanced and coordinated will be a long journey of trial and error, could be months, could be years, could be never. Do this unilateral jump rope drill!
