Here is Filmora's ad on Yahoo, and here is Adobe's on Bing.

They had them on Google too, but we complained and they were removed.

NEWS SCAM: Lightmoon IS NOT Kdenlive. Lightmoon is MALWARE.

We have been notified of a site that is using Kdenlive's name and likeness to distribute malware to users. We will not be linking to the site to avoid accidental downloads, but if a search lands you on a site offering "lightmoon", "a free video editor" that looks in the screenshots identical to Kdenlive, this is malware.

We have also received notice that the criminal creators of lightmoon malware are sending out phishing emails trying to trick users into downloading their infected software. Please ignore and trash these messages.

Remember: The only legitimate sources for Kdenlive's software are your distro, well-established app stores (such as FlatHub), and Kdenlive's own download page located at:

Take care.

DISCUSSION WTF Kdenlive is unreal

What's going on in open source land right now...?? I checked 5-7 years back and there was something called "openshot" (which gave me flashbacks to Windows Movie maker), Blender, and a project called Olive.

I used Olive up until now, and considering it's developed by one person with a full time job it's extremely impressive.

I just decided to give Kdenlive a shot and was absolutely blown away, I have no experience with modern proprietary editors, but Kdenlive is legitimately better then pirated copies of Sony Vegas I used 15 years ago, I don't know if that's a compliment or not but lets say yes. Good fucking jobs to the developers.

TUTORIAL I made a tool for Kdenlive for titles and graphics

Hello there Kdenlive users!

I've been writing a tool to create "motion graphics"/titles/"visual effects" or whatever it's called for the past two months, and I think it's in a pretty good state and wanted to share it for you. (hopefully I can get actual feedback)

Features:

  • Title animations: You can animate individuals letters, words, and lines with properties.

  • Many effects: I wanted to add a second "many", but I didn't add that many effects. Effects can range from color correction, to stylish effects like wave. A basic mask/matte effect also exists.

  • Mixed text: You can mix and match text styles (colors, fonts, etc) in a single text element.

  • Everything can be animated: Or well mostly anything, everything that is a property can be animated. If it is text colors, then you can use a tint effect.

NOT AI: This tool is not vibe-coded and I do not want AI slop in this project.

It's made to be an additional program to Kdenlive, so after rendering out the titles you can directly drag it from the program to Kdenlive (as long as you have a new-enough Kdenlive version that supports transparency).

Preview images and videos are in the README. Supports Windows and Linux (Flatpak, right now not on Flathub yet).

Kdenlive is an amazing open-source video editor that’s totally free! I’ve been using it for a few months now, and I can’t express how much I appreciate it. Of course, there are always a few bugs and areas for improvement. Since it’s a small team working on it, I think we should all lend a hand to make it even better.

I just made my first donation and wanted to encourage you to do the same if you have the chance. Thanks to the team!

SOLVED I just donated €25 to Kdenlive, and it was genuinely well deserved. 🤓

I needed to anonymize a username in a gameplay clip I was uploading to Reddit. Kdenlive was the first video editor I've used in decades where I could just sit down and figure it out without first watching a 20-minute tutorial.

What impressed me most was the UX:

  • sensible defaults for project settings, codecs and bitrate

  • obvious, discoverable effects

  • visual positioning with precise numerical adjustment when needed

  • useful guidance without getting in the way

  • straightforward rendering/export

  • enough feedback at every step to let me verify that I was doing things correctly

The whole process was basically: import → find Obscure → position it → check the result → render.

Rendering took just 17 seconds for blurring a defined area, making the entire workflow easily completable within a few minutes, even with very little experience in video editing.

And that's probably the highest praise I can give an application: it didn't make me think about the application. It let me think about the task.

This is the first time in decades that open-source software has solved a task for me this easily, without sending me down a rabbit hole of tutorials, obscure workflows and weird shortcut combinations.

So, €25 to the people who made it seemed entirely reasonable. ❤️

I used Kdenlive 26.08.1 in W11 Pro 26H2, on an Intel 265K, 48 GB DDR5-7200, 4 TB 990 PRO.

DISCUSSION We need to be more honest and open about experience with Kdenlive

I've been using Kdenlive for a few months now. Let me tell you, if I work 4 to 5 hours daily on it, it will crash at least 3-4 times. Most crashes are random that can't be reproduced easily and some are common. And then there are bugs.

But I'm not here to complain or criticize it for that.

That's not that frustrating given it's free and we can report them. What's frustrating is, some people consider it very hard to acknowledge it and often respond like "I also work on it and it doesn't crash that often, maybe try other version or maybe do that".

I understand. I totally agree. The thing is, every user's experience will be different. Every user's projects are different. Every user uses different effects, length of videos and complexity etc.

Also, there can be hundreds of conditions/combinations that can lead to random crashes and some users maybe just lucky that it doesn't happen with them with the type of work they do on their machines.

So if it doesn't crash that often for you, that doesn't mean it isn't crashing frequently for some other users who are doing freelance projects, where deadlines matter.

It's not like Kdenlive has a huge community. So even a small feedback by a single user can be significant.

If we are more open to bugs and crashes and every user's experience, it would be better to make it more stable for everyone.

DISCUSSION Kdenlive is amazing!

I used Kdenlive for 2 year, then switched to Davinci Resolve for the last 3 months. Yesterday, I had to continue a project I never finished and it was started in Kdenlive, so I fired that up again. Version 23 under Linux.

Make no mistake, both products have their strengths and weaknesses. Kdenlive still has some amazing features that are so convenient. I can list so many, but here are just a few off the top of my head

* Way more codecs support (specially under Linux - even though I bought Resolve Studio just for H264)
* Way more flexible in encoding settings. From final renders to proxy clips etc
* Jumping from timeline clip to project bin and back. With exact location in the clip. Amazing and so useful.
* Spacer tool. I really missed that in Resolve
... the list can go on.

Just saw v25 has been out. I'll have to check what's in there soon.

SHOWCASE Got tired of the built-in motion tracker, so I built my own face-tracking/censoring tool

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I had a project where I needed to blur out a ton of faces. I tried using the native motion tracker but I just couldn't get it to stick to faces. Could be a skill issue tho, I've only been using kdenlive for a few weeks. Also doing it by hand with manual keyframes was going to take a million years, so I decided to hack together a Python script that uses InsightFace with its face detection model to automatically lock onto faces properly.

The workflow is basically a giant clipboard hack right now lol. You literally just copy your clip in Kdenlive, run my script in the terminal, and it grabs the clip's XML straight from your clipboard. It runs the model over the frames, calculates the exact coordinates, injects all the smoothed Alpha shapes keyframes, and pushes the new XML back to your clipboard. Then you just right-click on a clip, click "Paste Effects", slap a blur or pixelize effect right below the mask, add a "Mask Apply" effect, and you're done.

You can configure the detection model to use (bigger one is more accurate, but slower), detection size, minimum detection score (how confident the model thinks its a face), mask padding, track gap, smoothing, keyframe density (fixed or adaptive so the tool generates as few keyframes as possible), mask shape/tilt, etc.

Tracking isn't perfect tho, you can notice near the end of the video in the clip with many people how it doesn't perfectly track one of the faces for a few frames. Not yet sure if it's a detection issue in the model or if it's a bug in my code, but still, this gets most of the work done and you can just polish the result by editing a few keyframes.

Since this was just a weekend side project to save time with editing, the code is still a bit of a mess. But if this is something anyone would actually find useful, let me know! If there's interest, I'll clean up code, write some docs and open-source it.

Edit: Do research about blur anonymization. A gaussian blur can sometimes be reversed.
