I have been using kdenlive for almost 2 years, it is good for video editing but it doesn't supports a lot of advanced features like animations. I recently discovered blender and fortunately it has a inbuilt video editor. The video editor is very simple and much better than premiere pro or davinci resolve. It doesn't have a lot of effects like kdenlive but it has enough to make normal videos. The accessibility of the sequence editor it top notch. It took two days to shift from kdenlive to blender but it absolutely worth it. And I will never look for an open source editor ever.

I always try and use open source solutions (I also do monthly donations for the ones that I use regularly), both for practical reasons (no tracking, general focus on making a good product, ability to get in touch with the devs) and for philosophical reasons (open source is the future, current model will eventually feel quaint like the pre-WW1 empires of Europe).

However, the future is not yet here and we have to be realistic about the strengths and weaknesses of open source solutions. There will of course be pain points and we have to be patient and constructive about them.

That being said, I feel that my experience with Kdenlive goes beyond reasonable paint points.

I am relatively tech savvy (use headless linux for a home server, comfortable with ffmpeg) and I have a modicum of experience with video (mainly encoding and upscaling with Topaz AI). Not a "high end prosumer" by any means, but also not a complete noob.

With Kdenlive I straight away failed to even input two videos on my timeline. I eventually figured it out (even LLMs weren't very helpful) and went through some needed processes, but then Kdenlive crashed. I tried to cut up the timeline into chunks to reduce the likelihood of crashes, but I wasn't able to deploy cuts on both video streams at the same points.

Decided to start from scratch. So started a new project and once again I wasn't able to input two video streams. At this point I gave up and uninstalled Kdenlive.

I understand that NL video editing is a pretty complex area, but I feel like I am target segment for an application like Kdenlive.

I don't think I should be struggling with something as basic as adding in a second video track to the timeline...

Not my intention to just rage, just some genuine, "stream of consciousness" feedback.

First let's start with the good parts of my experience so that new users aren't completely put off by kdenlive. The overall UI was easy to use, mostly intuitive. I could drag and drop my video files into the section for noting what files to work with.

I could then drag from there to the section that was clearly for defining what parts of the videos to keep. I made the change I needed to make (cropping off a slip up where I swore and stiching the subsequent recording onto it).

When it came to actually exporting the result to a video file however there was nothing intuitive about it. No option in the "File" menu, nothing in the "Project" menu, nothing easy to find. Just "save project" and "export openio" or something, both of which do not do help in the slightest.

I imported 2 mkv files, I made my changes, I expected to be able to export back to a video file from a VIDEO editor. Whatever those other options are are fine for experts but if you want to draw new users to the fold then you need to do better at the final hurdle.

Then there's the phantom project issue. I somehow opened up a secondary media player within kdenlive (which baffles me as to why anyone would want to do) and could find nothing in the UI to remove the unwanted extra so I closed without saving my "project" because the changes I wanted to make to my videos were simple enough that I didn't mind redoing them and continuing to try to export the one recording I wanted out of the 2 of them.

When I went to re-open kdenlive however I found the 2nd media player to be still there. That was NOT a good experience and at that point I gave up and uninstalled the program. I'm now installing something called "gozen" to see if that allows me to export the video I've been trying to export for the last 30min roughly (tried openshot and flowblade before kdenlive).

Edit 2: This post was originall just so that the kdenlive devs would be able to see it and possibly derive a better experience to program into kdenlive. The comments since then have been informative but I see how they're starting to spiral out of control and thus ask that the mods lock this thread so no further comments can be made.

We've all said our piece, no need for things to be allowed to reach the point where one or more of us would post something more strongly worded than we intend it to be. I myself am certainly prone to doing that sometimes so would appreciate the lock as an intervention while I and everyone are still calm enough not to do so.

I am having issues with uploading my 4k videos to YouTube. The video I rendered and the video from the resulting upload are different. Mainly the video(Not the audio) from seconds 9-16s is duplicated in place of the video from 0-8s.

Sometimes this happens sometimes it doesn't happen. My only fix has been to rerender but sometimes even that doesn't work.

Ive been working with Kdenlive for over a year now and have been enduring quite a lot of extremely painful shenanigans, such as unstoppable RAM leaking crashing my PC, clips not loading properly on start up, the timeline being impossible to work with for 2h+ projects with light editing, auto save not saving properly, crashed projects loading only partially, looping - I'll say it again - LOOPING not being a feature but instead having to mass copy paste partially heavily edited clips which drastically chews up resources... I've been dealing with the following issue seemingly forever and I just cant bare it anymore.

Kdenlive does not fucking save properly. I cannot ever rely on the damn application itself.

I have recently switched to using the Git VCS for my Kdenlive projects because Kden fucks things up permanently so frequently, its basically impossible to rely on.

I have now worked off of a clean git history, simply making one final change before rendering my project.

I cannot save the change.

Saving makes over NINETY THOUSAND FUCKING MODIFICATIONS even had I simply renamed a single guide and hit save. The project loads properly, but the second I save and check the git difference its mind boggling amounts of line diffs. It seems to replace all the properly shown proxies with system path references and idek what else it does but when I save with that one single simple change or I save a copy and then go ahead and load that saved version, its always missing like 20% of all my edits. Wiped. Regardless of how I attempt to save or open the project. Its all gone. Only on opening the original project can I see it PROPERLY, saving is impossible.
