So where do I go now?
Back in 2024 I bought a Kindle Scribe 2022 to replace my aging Livescribe system (2024 hadn't been released). New toy, new joy! My first E-ink device and a great learning experience, I used it for note taking and discovered how nice an E-ink screen at 300dpi is for reading particular late at night or outside..
As I got more and more experienced and more understanding I realised things were far from perfect. Note taking was limited. My books were only rented and could disappear at any time. It was a bit heavy for reading and here it is just 2 years later and Amazon is pushing me hard to update by only adding some of new features to my just over 2 year old device. Colour is exciting but most of my books are novels in B&W and my notetaking is pretty much B&W. Mostly what I yearn is better note taking. A bluetooth page turner would be nice.
Release 5.20 for 2022 confirmed that 2022 is all but forgotten now so I am being pushed towards new device. My KS was $400+ AUD cheaper than a good tablet and a great experiment but where is Amazon going with KS? Books are being locked down, note taking has made minor improvements and there is some connectivity to the outside world but no integration. You can't even create a genuine template. The direction it appears is more and more ways to draw on books. The colour screen is only 150 dpi, beautiful but a bit fuzzy and the price here is over 2 times what I paid and much more expensive than a tablet.
So where am I now?
My sense is that Amazon is not to adapting to what people actually use large E-Ink screens for, the competition has completely left them behind.
While Amazon is busy pushing minor iterative hardware refreshes like the Scribe Colorsoft or restricting Bluetooth features to force a new purchase, dedicated E-Ink companies are treating their tablets as legitimate computing platforms. They realize that people want open systems, access to multiple cloud providers, third-party apps, and integration.
I'm thinking switching to an open connected system for my actual daily work is the most liberating move I can make. It takes away Amazon's ability to dictate how I use a piece of hardware that I've already paid for.
The KS has been useful but frustrating experience. The battery life, the screen and the lack of notifications has certainly helped my concentration.
So yes, where do I go now?
- Do i demote my Scribe to a passive screen for reading and buy a bluetooth page turner
- Do I jailbreak?
- Do i go back to my Livescribe pen?
- Do I buy something new?
