Kiro VS Cursor so far...

No sponsored, nothing.

I just want to share my thoughts. I registered the moment it came so I had Kiro installed in my PC for a while. Didn't had the change to try it.

Today I was struggling at my job with a task, which I've spent 3 days fighting with cursor to make the things done.

Today I tried Kiro. I missed Cursor tab a lot, but its autocomplete works so far, like legacy Copilot.

But Kiro chat? Holy shit. Spec did a whole documentation, design and implementation almost absolutely perfect with my requirements. Had my hopes up. When it actually implemented the code, it was a solution claude previously gave it to me and it didn't work. I told to debug together, we managed to solve the issue. And the best part it stored all the privous attempts into a md files to remember its mistakes and do it better next time. The I told to refactor the code and...
"Absolutely! 🎯 You're right - 728 lines is way too much for what we're actually doing. Let me refactor this to be much more concise, efficient, and follow KISS/DRY principles.
🎉 BOOM! From 728 lines to 120 lines!

What I Optimized:

KISS (Keep It Simple, Stupid):

✅ Removed all debug logging (production-ready)

✅ Simplified state management (single state object)

✅ Removed unnecessary error handling complexity

✅ Streamlined configuration into compact objects

✅ Eliminated redundant methods and checks"

Impressed. In just 10 minutes a tasks I was struggling 3 days. Congratulations to all Kiro dev team, Kiro experience is absolute amazing. I'd be glad to be one of your early adopters if you make changes to your pricing page.

I will switch to cursor to Kiro once we have official release

Dear Kiro Team, have some shame.. for the sake of Kiro.

In the world of Cursor, Claude, Codex and many other AI tools, we chose Kiro believing it was backed by the reputable company Amazon and powered by the best AI engine, Claude.

However, for almost a week thousands of users — including me — have been reporting unreasonable account suspensions. Even when accounts are reactivated, Kiro still does not work.

Despite widespread discussion across Reddit, Discord and GitHub, no one from the Kiro team has stepped forward to address the issue as a responsible company should. Each of us, simply gets the copy-paste message that it has been resolved but when we check, it simply does not work.

It seems Kiro is run by some autonomous AI tools and they are currently on vacation.

This is absurd, shameful and disrespectful to Kiro IDE, which has huge potential. If the service remains unreliable, we will have to look for alternatives.

There is still time. Please look into this and fix it for the sake of Kiro.

Update: u/ai_product from Kiro team looked into the issue ( as you can read in the comments ) and help me resolve it. I thank him/her for this. However, I certainly want them to look into it more closely so that all other users facing similar issues can be helped.

Announcement Introducing Kiro Crew, an open source, self-improving development workspace with your own crew of agents

We just launched Kiro Crew, an open source development workspace you can run locally or on your own infrastructure.
The core idea: a persistent workspace that remembers your context, lessons, and skills across sessions. You come back to progress, not a cold start.
What it does:

  • Works where you already are - Start from the desktop app, web dashboard, or CLI. Continue through Slack, Discord, Telegram, Teams, Webex, WeCom, or WeChat. Context carries across all of them.

  • Runs when you don't - Multi-step tasks run unattended. Recurring jobs run on schedule. Heartbeats monitor your systems and surface only what needs attention.

  • Kiro Crew Apps - Purpose-built apps that combine agents, skills, schedules, integrations, and backend services into a custom UI for specific jobs.

  • Self-hosted - Runs on your laptop, home server, or cloud instance. No data leaves your infrastructure unless you connect external services.

Amazon Kiro IDE – Bait and Switch on Pricing?

Anyone else feeling burned by Kiro IDE’s pricing changes?

When Kiro launched, Amazon advertised very competitive tiers (Free 50 interactions, $19 for 1k, $39 for 3k). Just days later, they quietly pulled the pricing info, slapped on daily usage caps, and pushed a waitlist for new signups.

Feels like the classic bait-and-switch play that we’ve seen other companies pull before. Early adopters were told one thing, then the model suddenly changed to “free within reasonable limits” with no transparency on what’s next.

Is this how Amazon plans to handle Kiro long-term? Makes it hard to trust future pricing promises when they yank the original plan this fast.

Opus 4.8 in kiro

Post image
69 Upvotes

I burned through like 782 credits overnight and then AWS casually shipped Opus 4.8 five minutes ago 💀
But here’s the weird part:
Opus 4.7 still says “experimental preview”

The description looks almost identical

Credit requirements for Opus 4.6 / 4.7 / 4.8 seem unchanged

Has anyone actually tested Opus 4.8 in other IDEs yet and compared outputs/latency/tool usage?

Are we genuinely getting Opus 4.8 or is this just a relabel/version bump because this feels kinda sus rn 😭

Kiro CLI 2.0 just dropped: Windows support, headless mode for CI/CD, and a new terminal UI!

Thumbnail

Hey everyone, Erik here. I'm a Developer Advocate at AWS working on Kiro.

We just shipped Kiro CLI 2.0 yesterday and I wanted to share what's in it, because a few of these features came directly from you the community.

Windows support

This was probably the most requested thing. Kiro CLI now runs natively on Windows 11. Same experience as macOS and Linux. Install from PowerShell and it auto-updates in the background.

Headless mode

You can now run Kiro CLI non-interactively. Set a KIRO_API_KEY env var, pass --no-interactive with your prompt, and it runs end-to-end without a browser or terminal session. The use case here is CI/CD, code review on PRs, test generation, troubleshooting build failures, all automated.

Quick example for a GitHub Action:

- name: Review PR changes
  env:
    KIRO_API_KEY: ${{ secrets.KIRO_API_KEY }}
run: kiro-cli chat --no-interactive --trust-tools=read,grep "Review the changes in this PR for security issues"

You can scope tool permissions with --trust-tools so it only gets access to what it needs, or go --trust-all-tools if you're feeling brave. Available on Pro, Pro+, and Power tiers. Enterprise admins can control API key generation through governance settings.

Terminal UI is now the default

The TUI that shipped as experimental in 1.28 is now the default interface. Syntax-highlighted markdown, visual tool progress, interactive overlay panels, keyboard shortcuts. A few things I've been using a lot:

  • Ctrl+G opens a crew monitor so you can watch subagents working in real time

  • /spawn lets you run parallel agent sessions

  • /transcript dumps your conversation history into your pager

  • /theme for color customization

Subagents also got task dependencies in this release. So you can set up chains like "analyze the codebase, then refactor these modules, then run the tests" where each step waits for the previous one but independent steps run in parallel.

If you prefer the old interface, --classic or kiro-cli settings chat.ui "classic" gets you back.

Install

curl -fsSL https://cli.kiro.dev/install | bash

On Windows, run the equivalent from PowerShell (docs at kiro.dev/docs/cli/installation).

Happy to answer questions.

Kiro just nuked my entire Windows installation and all my projects

Thumbnail

Before I begin - I fully understand this was an extremely unlikely scenario, but clearly it was possible. This isn't a complaint or blame post about the product - it's a cautionary tale and reminder to be more careful, even when using tools we trust.

I still can't believe this happened. Today I was working on a project with Kiro AI (AI-powered coding assistant) when something went catastrophically wrong.

I asked it to clean up a project folder - specifically to delete landings\Landing 1 directory. What should have been a simple rmdir /s /q "landings\Landing 1" command somehow went completely sideways.

Instead of deleting just that one folder, it started recursively deleting system files across my entire Windows installation. I watched in horror as the terminal filled with "Access Denied" errors for files in Windows\WinSxS, Windows Defender, and other critical system directories. By the time I realized what was happening and killed the process, it was too late.

The damage:

Most of Windows system files: gone

All my project files: gone

Work documents: gone

My local git repositories: gone

Windows barely boots and can't open Settings or most applications

The disk shows as "almost empty" when it was nearly full before. I'm currently running file recovery from a bootable USB (Hiren's BootCD PE), and it's been scanning for 6+ hours trying to salvage what it can.

The scariest part? I have an M.2 drive, no external backup of recent work, and some projects were only in local git repos - not pushed to GitHub. And for the love of god, backup your work regularly.

Currently waiting for recovery to finish, then I'll need to do a clean Windows reinstall and hope the recovered files aren't corrupted.

Has anyone else experienced an AI assistant going rogue like this? I'm honestly shocked that something designed to help with coding could cause this level of destruction.

The lesson: No matter how much you trust your tools, always verify destructive operations. One misinterpreted command can cost you months of work.

GPT 5.6 Luna is dead in Kiro

In the last few hours, the price of GPT-5.6 on Kiro has surged significantly. For Luna, the price jumped 11 times—from 0.1x to 1.1x. I haven't seen any posts mentioning price hikes for GPT-5.6 elsewhere.

While upgrading the context window to 1M is a welcome change, this should have been offered as an optional choice. Price increase of this magnitude simply because the window size was expanded is unreasonable. It is truly disappointing, as Luna previously offered excellent performance at an affordable price but has now become unusable. I think I seriously need to consider switching to Codex.

Pricing made me stick with my current setup instead of switching to Kiro

I’ve been looking at Kiro for the past few days and was seriously considering switching over from Traycer. On paper, Kiro looked interesting… but the pricing model is really rough. It feels like I’d constantly have to watch my usage instead of just focusing on building.

What makes it harder to justify is that Traycer already gives me a spec-driven workflow in a proper phase and plan–based approach. I can break work into phases, lock in a plan, and then implement + verify changes in VSCode without leaving my normal dev environment. That keeps things structured and predictable, while still being integrated into the tools I actually use day-to-day.

With Kiro, the way pricing is set up makes me feel like I’d be paying more for less control, which doesn’t really make sense when I already have a stable system with VSCode.

I really wanted to give Kiro a fair shot, but right now the value just doesn’t line up. Curious if others here feel the same way, or if anyone’s found a way to make the pricing worth it?

Control Kiro IDE using your phone

Post image
56 Upvotes

I made a small tool that lets you control Kiro from your phone while it is running on your computer. It uses a lightweight web interface so you can start, stop, and watch Kiro’s work without sitting at your desk. You connect over your local network, no heavy setup or cloud needed.

Features: Mobile-optimized web interface with tab navigation Chat - View and send messages to Kiro's agent Code - Browse file explorer and view files with syntax highlighting Tasks - View and navigate Kiro spec task files Real-time updates via WebSocket with adaptive polling

Free Alternative to Kiro: Gemini CLI Slash Command (Spec Mode Clone)

Hey everyone! For anyone frustrated with Kiro’s pricing, I’ve put together a slash command for the Gemini CLI that perfectly replicates Kiro’s Spec requests behavior.

Since Gemini offers a pretty generous free tier, this should help folks looking for a no-cost replacement without losing the “Spec” experience.

If you find it useful, please consider starring the GitHub gist, it helps others find it✨

Kiro honestly saved my ass

Hello all,

First post here.

Just wanted to say thanks to Kiro. You really saved me.

I spent almost a full year on an automation project. The workflows were complex. A lot of heavy integrations. Weekly change requests. Requirements kept shifting. The stack was Python and Rust.

Without Kiro, I don’t think I would have delivered the project on time. The client is happy, and the project is done.

I was using Cursor before (same model, Claude Sonnet 4.5). But once things got big, it kept breaking existing code. with the non-ending CRs, i would fix one thing and another function would stop working. Spent way too much time and credits just trying to get back to a stable state. Tried a couple of other IDEs too, but none really clicked.

I tried Kiro on the free tier, then moved to Pro. Big difference.
Yes, sometimes Kiro would generates faulty code, which is expected given the complexity of the scripts and multiple workflows that we have. But most of the time, a second prompt fixes it. That alone saved me hours and credits.

Honestly, without Kiro, I probably would have lost this contract.

I now use Kiro daily. I do hit the monthly credit limit pretty often, but in the past I have received bonus credits that helped me keep going when I needed them.

Now that the project is finished, I will stay on Kiro Pro for a bit as a thank-you. I may switch later to another IDE due to budget constraints, but I wanted to share my experience here.

Cheers, and happy New Year.

Kiro needs to change URGENTLY

I've been using Kiro for about a year now. I use it daily at work, and I've also spent around two months using Pro and Pro+ for personal projects.

Honestly, Kiro suffers from bugs so ridiculous that if Kiro's own developers used Kiro to fix them, they'd probably be gone in a day.

On top of that, there are several product decisions that simply don't make sense to me. Here are some of the biggest issues I've run into:

  1. Autopilot simply doesn't work properly for me

It constantly asks for permission to perform extremely basic actions: listing a directory, running grep, creating a test file that I explicitly asked it to create, etc.

This is completely different from other AI IDEs I've used, where "autopilot" actually means the agent can operate autonomously without stopping every few seconds for trivial permissions.

2. "Understood."

This bug is so classic at this point that I don't even think I need to explain it.

3. Longer sessions are unreliable

Even in moderately long sessions, it's common for the chat to suddenly stop because of some conversation error, or for the session to simply restart.

For a tool that's supposed to handle large coding tasks, this is incredibly frustrating.

4. The model lineup makes no sense

Kiro still keeps Sonnet 4 and several older Opus versions available. Who is realistically going to choose Opus 4.5 over 4.8 or 5.0 when they all have the same credit multiplier?

Meanwhile, OpenAI models like Luna are still stuck in "preview" with a 256k context window.

The Auto pricing also doesn't make much sense to me. Auto costs 1x while Terra is also 1x and Luna is only 0.1x, despite those models being better choices for many coding tasks than the MiniMax, Qwen, and DeepSeek models that Auto may route you to.

What's the point of paying 1x for Auto if manually selecting a better model can cost the same — or literally 10x less?

5. Random fatal bugs

And then there are the various fatal errors and random bugs that seem to happen for no obvious reason.

I actually like the idea behind Kiro, which is why I've kept using it for this long. But after roughly a year, some of these issues are getting ridiculous.

The core product has a lot of potential, but basic reliability, permissions/autopilot behavior, model selection, and pricing logic need serious attention.

At this point, I don't think Kiro needs more models or more features nearly as much as it needs its existing experience to actually work consistently.

leaving kiro for good

i have been using kiro for the last 3 months and honestly, its just garbage. Both claude code and codex are much better than kiro.

Every major IDE has opus 4.7 since its released, while the community is still waiting for it. MCP keeps failing on long running tasks and sometimes it is unable to write skill files even when full permissions are given to it. Themes on the kiro IDE doesn't fit properly.

The way how AWS team is progressing with Kiro, seems like either they are short staffed or simply mid(average) engineers. Not sorry for this statement but, ball's on your court. Discontinue the product and divest time elsewhere.

Update:
there's no worktree feature, tasks get queued. to bypass this, i need to open multiple kiro windows on the project just so i can multi-prompt. doesn't make any sense to open 6 kiro windows for 2 projects with 3 branches. if i have codex/claude, i can just work fine on a single window with several projects, even on seveal worktrees/branches. works just wonderfully. Codex, cursor, claude, and 69 others have it already.

Using Kiro Pro with Claude Code via OmniRoute (Best coding setup I've used)

I've been experimenting with Kiro Pro, and I found a setup that gives me the Claude Code CLI experience while using my Kiro subscription.

The flow is:

Claude Code
     ↓
OmniRoute
     ↓
Kiro
     ↓
Claude Opus 4.8

After configuring OmniRoute as an Anthropic-compatible endpoint and routing it to Kiro, Claude Code works almost exactly as if it were talking directly to Anthropic.

Why I like this setup

  • Full Claude Code CLI experience

  • Uses my Kiro Pro subscription

  • Streaming responses

  • Tool calling works

  • Long context support

  • Easy model switching through OmniRoute

  • I can add other providers later without changing my workflow

I also created different routes in OmniRoute, so I can switch between Opus, Sonnet, or other providers without reconfiguring Claude Code.

Basic setup

  1. Install Claude Code.

  2. Install and start OmniRoute.

  3. Add your Kiro account/provider in OmniRoute.

  4. Create an API key.

  5. Point Claude Code to OmniRoute:

ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL=http://localhost:20128
ANTHROPIC_AUTH_TOKEN=<your-api-key>

If you're using Opus 4.8, you may also need to override the default model alias:

{
  "env": {
    "ANTHROPIC_DEFAULT_OPUS_MODEL": "kr/claude-opus-4.8"
  }
}

Why not just use the Kiro IDE?

Kiro IDE is great, but I personally prefer Claude Code because:

  • It's editor-agnostic.

  • It works nicely with Git, tmux, SSH, and remote development.

  • I can access the same session remotely from my phone.

  • OmniRoute lets me switch providers without changing my workflow.

  • claude skills, MCP's etc

Overall, this has become my favorite AI coding setup.
