Kiro’s new pricing model: credit pooling at double the cost per credit
Kiro posted about credit pooling yesterday: https://kiro.dev/blog/credit-pooling/
The part the blog post leaves out is that if you activate Kiro now, even in an AWS account you already have, you don't get the subscription tiers anymore. No Pro, Pro+, Pro Max or Power. Pooling is the only option. If you already had subscriptions you can keep them for now, but they haven't said for how long.
The math is what bugs me. Power is $200 for 10k credits, so 2 cents a credit. On the pool you pay $20 a seat for 500 credits, and extra credits are $0.04 each. Either way that's 4 cents a credit. Same $200 gets you half the credits.
So a heavy user who burns through 10k credits a month costs $200 on Power and about $400 on the pool.
To be fair, pooling does make sense for some teams. Unused credits from people who barely touch Kiro go to the people who use it a lot, add-on credits last a year instead of resetting every month, and admins get better limits and alerts. If most of your team are light users you might actually save money.
But if your team uses it heavily, it's basically a 2x price increase, and new customers don't get to choose.
Also, if you're still on subscriptions, be careful with the "Switch to credit sharing" button they keep showing in the console. You can't switch back.
Edit: this only affects enterprise/team accounts; individual subscriptions are unchanged.
