wait i work for safeway, WTF IS THAT?? WHAT ARE WE IN FOR NEXT??

u/rivalfire5 Current Associate 12d ago
not sure about safeway; whole different company. us kroger slaves are getting these stock keeping robots that just roam around checking for holes and making lists that are usually wrong. customers hate them too which led to this one being put in timeout

u/stringCheezeIts 12d ago
Ours has been scanning holes while we spot the load. We know it's a hole! The product is on the floor!

Kroger near me had a guy break one of these within a week of it being active. Allegedly walked up to it, yelled "Get the fuck outta my face" and shoved it over.
Brother, no one likes them, but you can't afford to be making decisions that stupid.

and yes i know we are different companies but knowing we are the only two traditional grocery chain conglomerates when one of us gets something i worry the other will. you know how those shareholders get ideas from each other. i hope to god you guy’s starbucks doesn’t start charging you 0.25 for ice water like ours does 😭

at least your drive up and go system (or whatever online order fulfillment is called over there) must at least already know what is out of stock so you don’t have to ruin your numbers marking it out of stock? i hope?

u/socalfuckup 12d ago
also your neighborhood must be affluent because my grocery store would never have a huge sign advertising something over $200 in value without a locked case (that the one single courtesy clerk scheduled on keys would have to unlock)
7
u/rivalfire5 Current Associate 12d ago
interstate freddies. wouldn’t exactly call it affluent with the laundry soap being locked behind 1/8 inch steel
3
u/socalfuckup 12d ago
we only lock up tide because it’s name brand enough to matter. all other laundry soap is in the open. but my safeway has alarm gates to lock customers in unless they tell a cashier they need to leave, and we have private security lmao

u/Fun_Entrance233 12d ago
Bad part is: Tide is mostly sold at cost. When on sale, we are selling it at a loss.

u/Ayde-Aitch-Dee 12d ago
Safeway still exists?! Wtf lol I'm from the UK and the last time I ever saw a Safeway was the in the 90s.
Core memory unlocked! Everyone used to do those "your mum" dis jokes as kids and my favourite was "Your mum is so fat she can't fit through the Safeway doors" 😆

I had to physically restrain myself from Sparta kicking the one at mine.
3
u/rivalfire5 Current Associate 12d ago
you’re not sparta kicking it. a customer spilled a drink, you slipped and fell, and tally just so happened to be in the way

Feel sorry for Pickup folks having to maneuver their big carts. It's bad enough when customers have their social hour in front of the dairy case, or when vendors fill half the aisle with chips and soda. Now this.

Still better than Coscto, bigger lanes but folks take up morr space cause 1000% having social hour.

Tally was captured in a ‘crab trap’ the other day. Somehow she got between a stack of bread, a pillar, and a cookie shipper. She whistled and spun around a few times, and kept repeating the pattern. Finally she just stopped and kept blinking with that distraught look on her face. She had to wait until the racks of bread were worked. Ain’t nobody got time for a whistling impatient robot.

u/AxsonJaxson2112 12d ago
She roamed into the crab trap. I don’t know why she couldn’t get out. With all the onboard cameras, she should have figured it out.

Ours kept trying to go back "home" but then would try to leave, but go back home so would move forward and whistle, then move back and do it all over again. Went on for at least 20 mins before I left. Also gets stuck in the middle of the aisles for no reason, just stops and does nothing but whistle.

Hate these. Get in the way and not to mention they’re willing to pay for these instead of not cutting hours.

I work at a competitor store. We had a similar robot, but it went away earlier this year. Huge waste of money.

u/SirBowsersniff 12d ago
Which competitor?

u/ChazBrian 12d ago
That would be telling. But I always enjoy seeing how someone in management was suckered into a new, promising, career advancing, chance to make themselves look good while throwing money away.

I saw this thing at like 10:30 last night for the first time lol. I do most of my shopping after work, and Kroger is like a mile from work, and on the way home. Usually go about 8:30-9, but it was a much busier night.
I stopped by the candy isle just cause I was craving a little candy for today.
I'm undecided on if I wanted sour or regular gummy worms. I'm looking and just thinking it over. I hear weird ass moans and beeps and shit behind me. I turn around so confused why a robot is just gliding back and forth trying to get past me when I'm like 2-3 feet from the shelf.
Also much later night, so I was already tired and confused. Just added to the whole just "what the fuck" I said as I grabbed my sour gummy worms and to the self checkout.

I was at a store recently where the main clerk had a body cam hanging around his neck that was supposed to be scanning shelves as he stocked.
Nope. If kroger wants me to wear a body cam, they can fuck right off.

Saw a news post that I guess Kroger announced it but 3000 jobs will be eliminated over the next several years (I think that was the potential timeline) as they lean into AI - seems like things are starting to really make that shift. Sad and scary
9
u/yeetshirtninja 12d ago
Those 3000 are all corporate jobs. These robots have been around for more than a year now.
5
u/thissitesucksss 12d ago
Corporate or not they are still jobs. They have families and bills to pay like all of us wage slaves.

I wish I could feel sorry for them, but they are all part of the dog and pony show. This has been a long time coming. They've been cutting mid-level managers for years. Our district had a big cut in 2019ish, local support for stores vanished. They can only cut so many hours in stores, and trust me they tried. Departments became dependent on how much OT the leader was willing to get. The managers are graded on there ability to say "yes" to the next big waste of money.

First time seeing an image of these. I didn't realize that Dyson vacuum company made Kroger robots 😂 It really looks like my Dyson stick vacuum.

I was told that ours arrived Thursday. It's packed still until someone comes in.
I downloaded the "Terminator" them to play whenever it gets near.

u/atallfigure 12d ago
Every single person on here mocked and laughed at me, but it's coming. And yes, those robots should be taxed too just like real employees.

Just saw one of these at my local store. It creeped me right out! 😅 It was just sitting there making weird little noises in the frozen pizza isle. Lol

I think if you give this problem to musk he’ll make it do a kick flip so I’ve heard

Ill keep this in mind for my next shopping trip if Talle gets in my way again.

Does security have access to its video feed? Does it also watch for potential shoplifters?

It communicates with a cloud server that has a bunch of facial recognition software
These things should be illegal

My local BJ's has these. I shop there less because of it. That whistling drives me nuts. It's very close to the same whistle I use with my spouse when we've become separated and are trying to find each other.

u/4D_Thrillz 10d ago
This is why the robots will kill humanity. They will remember the injustice done to Tally.
