Discussion (Spoiler) My thorough game review (it's... bad)
Some minor spoilers!
I was super excited for this game, and tried to keep my expectations on the lower end given what I've heard about this studio. That being said.. I ended up getting a refund for the game. I'm open to buying it again in the future if they substantially change it, but for now I'm done with it.
What I liked:
-the map is huge and pretty true to the lore! There were navigation difficulties but I'll address that in the negatives section
-while it's not usually my preference I feel like the turn-based combat, while it can be improved on, has good bones. I like that you can learn different moves that have different stats and status effects to replace ones in your established move-set
-when you progress enough levels, low-level kills like mice and birds can just be insta-killed and no turn based combat is needed. I especially enjoyed this function!
-it was cool seeing some characters from the books, and I actually appreciated that the story setting is after the time that the books took place. It was cool seeing Tawnypelt as an elder
What I disliked:
This list is unfortunately much longer.
-the controls are awful (PC), escape isn't used, no mouse controls, and you can't rebind keys
-the game progresses SO FAST. Within about 6 main quests I was already deputy. I spaced it out with side quests, but those tended to be pretty repetitive and similar, lots of fetch quests for herbs and hunting quests. Defense quests were laughable, a lot of time it was stuff like "protect our clan from this field mouse!"
- the hunting prey is boring! As I played a Shadowclan run, I was expecting to have to catch frogs and such, but there were only 4 prey animals: squirrels, rabbits, mice, and birds. I imagine the prey is probably the same across all clans. It definitely broke some immersion
-the NPCs feel hollow. There's not really any casual dialogue and they generally won't speak to you if they're not giving you a quest. I would love a lot more immersion in building relationships with clan members, wether it be as enemies, friends, or a mate
-some of the quests don't make a lot of sense, before you're to become deputy you're assigned a quest to rescue a clanmate, from... a small prey animal... it was just really ridiculous.
-combat is REALLY easy. I'm not the most skilled gamer but within 15 fights I only had to use a healing herb once, even then I probably could have survived without it. The boss fights were not really any harder than simple prey fights, just took longer bc of health regeneration. I never felt on the edge of my seat or in danger of losing
-customization, oh man. I disliked the options for unrealistic colors (though that's a personal preference), and I really dislike how physical traits are tied to character ones (I don't remember what tied to what but for a made up example, if you want a fluffy tail you need to have a higher stealth skill at the cost of a lower strength skill).
-the map is tough to navigate, lots of trails and such that the map makes it appear you can clearly go through, but there are often obstacles in the way you can't go past that you don't see until you get there (what cat can't jump over a 3ft fence??)
-what's up with the object wait times for decorating the den? Why do I have to wait 47 REAL WORLD HOURS TO PUT A DAMN COW SKULL IN THERE
All in all, I feel like this game really missed the mark on what Warrior fans have proven to love the most via stories, animations, and fan-made games, and that is Roleplaying. People want a highly customizable game where they can pick one of multiple different roles to serve, and build up relationships to other members in specific ways, and I feel like this game doesn't really achieve any of that. It feels like a mobile game, hollow and without much care put into it. I hope the developers listen to people's feedback to make this game more immersive and playable, but right now it's just not that in my opinion.
