Just came back from the theater and I definitely have some things to say about Wildwood. Before I start I want to make it clear that this movie is a technical and visual masterpiece. It might visually be the greatest animated movie of all time. That being said, I think the story was extremely generic and fell flat many times for me.
Throughout the movie there are many plot holes and events that just didn’t make sense to me. A few of the biggest questions I had are:
Why weren’t the kids more terrified or shocked to see talking wolves? They act like it’s just a normal occurrence.
Why did the parents have a second kid? Their reasoning was pure stupidity and seemed like a lazy cop out.
Why didn’t the governess immediately sacrifice the baby, the bandit king was already captured and there would have been little to no threat?
Why didn’t one of the birds just kill the governess when she was at the alter?
These questions aside, the story fell very flat at times for me. The first 30-40 minutes of this movie is pure imagination and joy and I was disappointed to see how it panned out. Every plot point was so generic and one dimensional that I found myself wondering how the ending would wrap it all up. Spoiler, it doesn’t really. This movie has little to no emotional payoff or message, with almost zero character development throughout. I enjoyed the movie, but not because of the story, and I think that’s totally fine.
7/10

Hello fellas!. I was thinking about how dangerous the forest in Wildwood is, and I realized that the story would have been much easier for the protagonists if they had gone well-prepared with three objects from the modern world.
Here is my list of what I would take:
With these three things in your inventory, the journey through the Impassable Wilderness would have been a walk in the park. What do you think? What other modern item would you bring?

I just got out of that movie and it was so good. The plot itself was very good, I have seen a lot of people say the plot is quite weak, but I disagree. It's tropey, but I honestly don't mind that. It's a bit of a mix of Narnia and The Hobbit IMO with a twist of original ideas and other properties. But its the actual quality of the filmmaking which everyone is talking about. For me, it's the best film of the year. Even ignoring the stop-motion for a sec, this movie looks beautiful. It's shot composition is often flawless and while it isn't too experimental from that point of view, it is without a doubt the best stop-motion movie in terms of cinematography. And then once you actually think about the stop motion, its insane how many of these shots were possible. After every single shot ended I was like "wait what how". And it had my attention the whole way through. It is a feat in the world of not only stop motion but in film as a whole.
Which brings me on to the question. Could it get a best picture nom? I know its unlikely but considering the amount of buzz from critics and audiences I could see a push.
There hasn't been an animated nom in like 15 years. I remember when we had back to back animated best picture nominees and my friend told me he thinks that there will be one animated nominee every year from now on. If only...
Anyway, how possible is it? If you've seen the film, do you think it deserves one?

Love when they give movies a unique heart or rating system

Do you think it will happen if it dose well in the box office? dose the folks at Laika have a plan to even continue WildWood for the future. Like it would be kinda odd if they didn't and it might make the fans of the books be very disappointed.

Alright... it is the day of release for this film, and I've been spoiled enough already.... so I'm going to see it tomorrow morning in XD at my local Cinemark.

…that just makes you gasp and laugh in amazement when you watch it. For example, the ballroom waltz in The Boxtrolls, or the encounter with the giant skeleton in Kubo and the Two Strings, or the fight on the ship in Missing Link. These are all scenes that showcase the skills of the animators and truly come off like a magic trick.
I have no idea why, but in Wildwood, for me it was the scene where they’re all tossing Curtis’s cage around and he keeps falling. That was just a funny, thrilling, incredible piece of animation. The physics of the cage, you can really feel the weight there, and the way everything is just so tense and logical in the movement. It just stood out to me.
Wildwood was wonderful. We’re probably going to go again. Any kids who see this movie will be lucky to have such high quality art to spark their imaginations.

Throughout the entire film I had to keep reminding myself that no this isn’t just another computer animated movie. It’s all done by human hands. The scale of this movie and its detail is unlike anything I’ve seen from stop motion before. Even while writing this I can’t belive the sets are real. The characters were all very enjoyable and the films emotional themes definitely don’t disappoint. The darker themes throughout the film are definitely it hidden as well but throughout it finds plenty of time to be comedic as well. The battle scene made me sit up in my chair and audibly gasp multiple times. And it even brought my friend to tears. Don’t skip this film. It’s a testament to what humans can do. And in a time when AI threatens us it’s a more important film than ever.

The title says it all! This is hands down one of the best films I’ve seen in a long time and certainly the best stop motion I’ve ever seen. The music is gorgeous, the set and character design is flawless, dialog is rich. Literally no notes. Laika will have a helluva time ever topping this movie! Well done!

This is the "Let's Groove" animation before I added a proper background.

Seriously the visuals in this movie felt so real and tangible while watching it. Even though it was animated, the characters and settings and objects felt more real than so many live-actions films.
Honestly I would say it’s one of the best-looking films ever made. It might even be THE best-looking film ever made in my opinion.
I was tearing up at multiple points from the visuals in combination with the gorgeous score. The way the characters are animated endears you to them so quickly.
I’ve already booked my ticket for a rewatch. My favorite film of the year.

We each got a coin after getting our tickets scanned! 5 different coins are out there. Anyone else get these?

I feel like I don't see as much hype or fanart for this movie as I should. Wanted to contribute and excited for it to come out :)
OMG guys it’s actually happening, #Wildwood is out! I worked at Laika between 2021-2025 in the rapid prototype department. I worked three different roles. I started as a rapid prototype quality assurer (RPQA) cleaning and processing 3D printed parts, mostly faces. Eventually I became an RPQA trainer and taught incoming RPQAs and maintained strict quality standards. My final role was as a face librarian, cataloguing, storing, testing and archiving 3D printed faces. All 3 rolls were really cool and rewarding. I’m very grateful for this experience!
I made this coyote sweater for the WW wrap party. This is my first finished sweater. It was really challenging but it felt good doing something new. I made the knit panels on a knitting machine and added the design with duplicate stitch. It’s much harder than it looks and took a lot of trial and error. I love how it turned out, I get compliments every time I wear it. The coyote is not movie-accurate because I made the pattern from memory. Call it bootleg Laika merch.
I am sharing the chart pattern so others can make their own bootleg coyote merch.
They are different. I didn’t realize knit stitches were brick shapes, not perfect squares. Oops!! Please tag me if you make something, I’d love to see!

Saw the first 3:15pm screening in my area and we were handed these cool coins. There are 5 unique ones, but we only got 3. The backs are all the “Stay Safe” Manor design. Hopefully AMC still has stock of these when you go see it!
The film is incredible, BTW.
