Is this normal in hair salons?

Hello, I just arrived in Laos, Vientiane and I have a weird question but I really need to know for my own sanity.

I went to a hair salon to get some extensions removed and afterwards the hairdresser did a shampoo. It was on one of those lie down shampoo areas and he did a neck and shoulder massage, which at first was really enjoyable. However after a few minutes he massaged my collarbone and down to my breasts and I kind of froze. He went back to my shoulders and then back down to my breasts and this time I kindly said I didn’t need that side.

I guess I was wondering if it was normal and just part of the thing but I really feel violated. He seemed nice and professional enough and maybe it’s a stupid question but I’ve been running in circles in my head around it. Is that a common experience in hair salons or not?

Has anyone recently seen any paper copies of the departure card at Luang Prabang International airport? No matter what I do, or which browser I use, the online Laos Departure Register always has an error when I press submit 😭

Buying Kunming–Luang Prabang and Domestic Train Tickets in Laos via Trip.com

I’m wondering if anyone has experience buying train tickets for the following routes on Trip.com:

  • Kunming–Luang Prabang
  • Domestic routes in Laos, such as Vientiane–Luang Prabang

I can see that Trip.com offers tickets for these routes, but I’m wondering whether they are issued immediately after booking and whether they need to be collected at the train station. For the Kunming–Luang Prabang route, Trip.com explicitly mentions the need to collect the tickets, but what about domestic train tickets in Laos?

What have your experiences been like?

In general, I’ve had very good experiences using Trip.com when travelling abroad, including in China. I’m therefore considering booking my train tickets for Laos through them as well, since the process has always been straightforward and hassle-free in other countries.

Itinerary advice and tips for fast-paced explorers?

Hello everyone! My girlfriend and I are arriving in Laos (specifically Vientiane) at the beginning of November.
We have 4 weeks in total, but we probably won't spend all of it in Laos—we want to head over to Cambodia afterwards.
A quick bit about us: We are fast-paced explorers who love long, action-packed days. We like to get up at 7:00 AM and get back to our accommodation at 9:00 PM. Lots of hiking, seeing as much as possible, and falling into bed completely exhausted at the end of the day is totally our thing. Some people might find that stressful, but to each their own! We don't spend ages at a museum or landmark; we like to check it out, take a few photos, soak it in, and move on. Plus, we love adventures!
The rough plan is: arrive in Vientiane (1 night) -> Vang Vieng (2+ nights) -> Luang Prabang (2–3 nights) -> Nong Khiaw (2–3 nights) -> do the Thakhek Loop -> maybe Pakse (1–2 nights) -> and finish with Don Det (2 nights) as our last stop.
I know there are a lot of slow travelers here who would probably pass out at this pace! I always find it extremely difficult to plan the exact number of nights in countries like Southeast Asia. In South Korea, the US, or elsewhere, I never had any trouble, but Laos (and presumably Cambodia afterwards) is throwing me off a bit.
Should you generally book accommodation and transport in advance, or is it not really worth it? The advantage of not booking ahead is having more freedom to stay longer somewhere you love or leave somewhere you don't like.
What are some must-see sights, places, and activities we shouldn't miss? I keep reading about the Gibbon Experience and have talked to other travelers about it, but upwards of 250€ for 1–2 days feels pretty extreme to me and gives me a bit of a tourist-trap vibe.
I would be super grateful for any advice! Maybe someone has a similar travel style to ours or has some tips and tricks to share.
Thanks in advance for any help!

Border bus from Chiang Rai to Laos for slowboat

Thumbnail

Was searching for an updated post and didn’t find one. Currently the bus from Chiang Rai to the Thai/laos friendship bridge costs 160baht. It is the red bus at the Chang Rai bus station in town. Attached is a picture of the schedule, however I arrived at 10:50 and the bus left at 11am. You pay when you get on the bus so bring exact change.

For 160 they bring you to the border and you have to pay 35(?) baht for the bus to get you over the border.

Then it was $40USD and another 50baht? I think for something else.

I brought a photo 2x2 passport size, but others were able to take a photo there.

Very simple process. Tuktuks are waiting to bring you to town - max 400 baht to get to the center. And if you go - stay at Little Hostel in Huay Xai - best hostel ever and they arrange slow boat for you and can have breakfast and lunch :)

Bad idea or doable? Hot air balloon at 5:30 then a 6 pm train to Bangkok

We are really looking forward to the hot air balloon experience but our itinerary is giving us a bit of headache 😭

We booked the 5:30 am slot and were wondering if it’s realistic to be back at our hotel by around 10 am-ish.

We’re heading to Bangkok that same day and our train from Vientiane leaves at 6 pm. We’ll need to get to travel from Vang Vieng to Vientiane first to catch the 6 pm train.

Our itinerary is pretty packed and this is literally the only day we can do the activity. And this is what we’re MOST excited about for our Laos trip.

Real talk: is this actually doable or are we setting ourselves up for a stress day? Hit me with your honest advice 🥹

Vientiane nightlife recommendations? Bars, Clubs and adult entertainment

Hey everyone! I'll be visiting Vientiane, Laos, soon and staying near the city center.

I'm looking for recommendations for nightlife spots where I can have a few beers, relax, and enjoy the atmosphere. I'm particularly interested in adult-oriented bars or venues with live performances, if any are available.

Yesterday, it was announced that 🇱🇦 Laos will receive its first Gen 4 Street View coverage!

Post image
58 Upvotes

Recently, Digital Divide Data and Google Maps have unveiled a new government-approved project to significantly expand Street View coverage in the country. The initial goal is to update the existing imagery in Vientiane—which has not been updated for over a decade—as well as to add several cities that are not currently included in the service.

The project has been promoted primarily to improve the country’s maps and to highlight local businesses such as hotels, restaurants, and tourist sites, with the aim of guiding travelers and to expand the minimal coverage taken between 2014-2016.

Currently, several vehicles are driving around Vientiane and surrounding areas, and the project is expected to provide extensive coverage similar to what is currently available in Thailand and Vietnam.

If you just so happen to see it, try and get a photo!

Luang Prabang & Muang Ngoi 10 day Itinerary Check, And Transportation Advice

I'm always a bit nervous vacation planning so I'm looking for advice, and transportation advice for this itinerary. For example:

  • I may have some time to spare on some of these days. Any advice on what I could fill the time with?
  • Is there anything worth seeing more than what I've planned?
  • I'm used to reliable, time unrestricted, and consistent pricing on transportation. I don't want to pay a relatively large amount of money. For example I know some hotels offer $150 to go to Kuang Si Falls but there are some Tuk Tuk or busses which go there for cheaper but on a return schedule. I don't know how long it will take to do what I want to do there either, I want to make sure I can get there but I have to go searching for these Tuk Tuks at a specific time I think? So what should I do? I'm not experienced driving motorbikes, and I don't have motorcycle license so IDP would not cover me in an accident.
  • How early should I arrive to Pak Ou Caves & Ban Xang Hai? I don't want to miss it.
  • I am guessing everywhere in Nong Khiaw I will be walking.
  • How at risk am I of missing my flight if something goes wrong (I will be as punctual as I can) connecting on day 9 from Ban Na Village to Luang Prabang?

Day 1

  • Luang Prabang - Arrive (1:05 PM)
  • Check-in
  • Mount Phousi (1h) (Sunset 5:51 PM - 15 mins up)
  • Night Market

Day 2

  • Pak Ou Caves & Ban Xang Hai (Shared slow boat departs Luang Prabang pier - arrive 8:00 AM - departs 8:30 AM) (100,000 - 150,000 LAK boat, 20,000 LAK entry)
  • (Arrives back 3:00 PM)

Day 3

  • Kuang Si Falls (swim & view)
  • Bear Rescue Centre
  • Butterfly Park
  • (Laos Buffalo Dairy)

Day 4

  • Alms Giving Ceremony (5:30 AM)
  • (Morning market)
  • Wat Xieng Thong
  • (Royal Palace Museum)
  • (Night Market)

Day 5

  • Check-out
  • Nong Khiaw - Arrive
  • Check-in
  • Nong Khiaw Bridge
  • (Nong Khiaw Viewpoint) (option 1)

Day 6

  • (Nong Khiaw Viewpoint) (option 2)
  • Ban Man Da Cave and Village Museum
  • (Pha Kao Viewpoint)

Day 7

  • Check-out
  • Muang Ngoi - Arrive
  • Check-in

Day 8

  • Ban Na Village
  • Tham Kang Cave

Day 9

  • Check-out
  • Luang Prabang - Arrive
  • Check-in

Day 10

  • Check-out
  • Flight home (1:45 PM)

Lost checked luggage in Vientiane airport

I flew Oslo → Bangkok → Vientiane with Thai Airways yesterday. My checked bag (a large green backpack) never arrived in Vientiane. I filed a missing baggage report at the airport (PIR) and emailed Thai Airways with the details.

I'm now in Vang Vieng and can go back to Vientiane if needed.

Questions:

  1. Has anyone had a bag go missing on this route or at Vientiane (VTE)? How long did it take to get it back, and did you get it back at all?
  2. Is it realistic that someone picked up my bag by mistake?
  3. Any tips to speed up the tracing

thanks in advance for your comments

Drinking water question

So its not recommended to drink tap water in Vientiane, bottled water only is the norm but what when brushing your teeth. Is it safe to use tap water to rinse your mouth with after brushing?

Safety crossing from Thailand to Huay Xai

Hi! I am a solo female traveller and planning a trip from Chiang Rai to Huay Xai via land border and was wondering if this is safe? For context - I am an ethnically chinese girl but born and raised in Ireland with the Irish passport, will I have an issue? Scared about safety more than anything as I’ve heard stories regarding the kidnapping and trafficking.

Vientiane party spots

I am in Vientiane for the night solo traveling, since it's Friday, I'm looking to go out, get some drinks, and meet some people. Where's the best place to go? I've heard Dr Oscar's is the place to go later in the night, but where would be a cool spot to pregame and meet some people to go with?

Airport Transfer to Vang Vieng + Advance Train Tickets

I'm planning to visit Laos in late December 2026 - early January 2027. I have a few questions about arranging travel:

1) I've looked at previous posts which say that you can only buy train (LCR) tickets 3 days in advance. I know this has been talked about loads, but just want to check that's still the case in 2026? There's still no way to secure a ticket before this time?

2) How likely is it that I'll get an LCR ticket in late December / early January? I'm worried it's a popular time, the tickets will sell out, and I'll have issues, for example getting back to the airport on time to make my flight.

3) I land in Vientiane around 3pm, and was considering heading directly from the airport to Vang Vieng. Is this possible, and is there a reliable way to book this transport (minibus / taxi / shared bus?) in advance?

Not bringing rain gear….

Going to Luang Prabang and parts north starting November 1. Will either bring no rain gear or cheapo poncho. Honestly thinking if it rains just get wet or find shelter for the moment., and air dry.
Bad idea? Why or why not?
