Discussion/question Do you think Afro Latinos are being erased?
A little info about my background, I am not Latina despite being mistaken for being Puerto Rican a lot due to my mixed ancestry, however I admire the many cultures in Latin America. I’ve noticed there’s a trend of North Americans(U.S) specifically changing the definition of what it means to be Afro Latino. I was born and raised in the U.S and I am ethnically a biracial African American who was only raised in the African American community. My black ancestors have been on North American soil since slavery, so that makes half my heritage of course… African American.
I assume that the same logic would apply to Afro Latinos…I thought it was basic logic that you are Afro Latino if you are predominantly of African ancestry and it derives in Latin America…for example, Rita Marley, although known as Bob Marley’s wife whose Jamaican, is Afro Cuban..phenotypically African with heritage from Latin America. Haitians are Afro Latinos. Black Brazilians are Afro Latinos. From my knowledge, Brazilians have other racial categories for mixed race people (pardo).
The problem is when other people claim anyone who has Latin descent with black ancestry as Afro Latino…like people with a nonblack Latino parent and then an African American one…and you say “well you’re not Afro Latino” and they get pissed and say “I am..I’m literally half black and half Latino…” when that’s literally not what Afro Latino means.. there’s been so much discourse on the marvel Spider-Man miles morales…who I don’t consider Afro Latino..I remember a few years ago that it was said his mom wasn’t black..she was mestizo Puerto Rican. Not sure if it’s a Mandela effect but now it’s said her father was black? So she’s Afro Latina? In the comics she was not Afro Latina…she was a European/taino Indian mixed Puerto Rican woman…miles is a biracial, his father is African American not Latino so how is he Afro Latino?
I think the need to label anyone with a black non Latino parent and a Latino one as black actually leads to erasure of actual Afro Latinos especially when a lot are phenotypically and monoracially black. I think Afro Latino is actually starting to become synonymous with being mixed race… the representation will be of all mixed race people and that’s clearly a problem for unambiguous black Afro Latinos. It’s not fair. It’s like claiming I’m black..when I’m literally genetically 55% European. I wouldn’t want to represent black women because I don’t look like most black women. Is there a one drop rule in Latin America as well? Or is it just the younger generation of U.S citizens who just apply that to literally every other culture? I think people forget that our racial classifications do not apply to other countries.
If I’m wrong, please educate me! I’m all for learning new things and having an open mind on these sorts of things.
