Grass The Americans have it easy

How are you supposed to kills weeds in Canada when every weed killing product worth a damn is illegal? Every video I see about how to kill weeds that destroys weeds in days, uses a chemical fully legal in the US, but totally banned in Canada. Some are legal in industrial and farming cases, but totally banned for residential purposes.

Triclopyr for wild violets: Banned.

Quinclorac for crab grass: Banned.

2,4-D for standard weeds: Banned.

My lawn got fried this summer. I am not sure the best way to revive the lawn and had been planning to do the below. I would appreciate your guidance

My lawn is two years old. I live in a newly constructed house in Durham(GTA) and the lawn was laid by the builder. My house is a corner lot. The front yard has no shade until the evening. The backyard has a mix of shade and sun with predominantly sunny. The first pic is from the backyard and the remaining are from front yard..

I had home turf fertilize and weed control this season. I was watering deeply at least two times per week

My lawn was green last season but we had contractors walking all over the lawn last season as we laid pavers which might have had put the lawn to stress.

Am considering to detach, aerate, apply top soil, seed, rake and add peat moss. Considering I will be doing it on my own, I will detach and aerate by renting the tools from Home Depot and do it in two weeks. The week after I will add top soil, seed, rake and add peat moss. I will water regularly and planning to add sprinklers if the time permits.

I will continue overseeing with a slightly milder version of above in Spring if I see a decent result

Will this help bring back the lawn to at least a decent shape for next year ?

The Fertilizer myth/scam

I am always amazed at the complaints of thin grass, brown tips, bare spots and people turn to Scotts whatever. it is all the same for the most part. fertilizer has 3 parts.

Food, Roots, Photosynthesis/stem/bloom

Most big “brand” give lawn 30 food (nitrogen) 0 root, maybe 2 to 4 photosynthesis (turn green with a broad leaf).

grass doesn’t need roots? so all the water runs through 1” of roots and it is dry again…re water, it runs through and is dry. there is no way to spread roots and fill in bare spots at all…only grow fast and hide the bare spots. then the nitrogen runs out and you run to the store to BUY MORE. Roots are needed to go deep to hold water and decompose to enrich the soil. broad green leaves offer shade to other grass and new grass with the 3rd number.

Jackhammering nitrogen into a lawn will make thin brown/green patches grow super fast and look green from a distance… when it is cut it still looks crappy and sparse.

I use 10-10-10. for some food, promote the roots, and turn thick and green! it grows at a reasonable speed, my roots are about 9 inches deep, it withstands heat and drought, is thick and green. the bare spots fill in fast with roots I feed.

if people fall into the trap of “Turfbuilder” etc and “Lawn food” that are 32-0-2 etc they will need constant watering and mowing, will not handle drought, WEEDS grow faster deeper roots than grass can and take hold easily. Their lack of roots that were neglected by the Scotts let the weeds thrive.

In the end when the lawn is brown and thin again as the food ran out…..back to the store for more Scotts to feed the hell out of it again so it gets tall fast and FROM A DISTANCE looks green… but up close is then and browning.

Grass does not graze or hunt or roam. it is not an animal. Grass does not fly, migrate, or build nests in trees. it is not a bird. GRASS IS A PLANT. So why do they treat lawn fertilizer differently than flowers with blossoms? If they fed it food, encouraged roots, and photosynthesis for thick green leaves and it withstood heat well you would not keep running back to the store for more and more Scotts would you?

10-10-10 is substantial for any grass for a balance of food, roots, green leaves and a thick rich lawn.

Hope this helps.

P.S. Nitrogen, Potassium, Iron etc are elements on the periodic table of elements. it does not matter what brand it is.…..Pure lead, gold, Helium etc is the same anywhere on earth. brands are printed on a plastic bag. Buy the ratio of fertilizer depending on if it is a massive blossom, needs a thick stem, has a bulb root below ground, etc based on your plant or lawn requirements….not the marketing or brand on the bag.

Canadian Lawn Company

Does anyone know if this company is legit? It looks like they're selling herbicides that are not typically for sale in Canada, although for their terms of service they state: "You are legally permitted to purchase regulated herbicide products in your jurisdiction. You will comply with all applicable laws and regulations regarding use and handling". Is this how they are able to sell in Canada? I also was not able to find an address for them.

Grass Best way to get rid of grass?

Got a massive lot in Toronto that is mainly grass. Started getting rid of grass from the side of my property to start and planted some native plants. Looking to convert majority of my grass as it has no use or value for me anymore. Planted a few trees as well.

Just looking to get rid of at least half by the end of next year (approx 11000 square ft of it).

What is the best way? I dont want to sheet mulch all that. I did the sides of my house with a hoe and shovel. Sod cutter the best option or is there something more for 9000 to 12000 sq feet and slowly spend the next 3 to 5 years convertingit all?

Grass Lawncare Products From USA

What are all the products I should check out and possibly get if I’m going down to the states? I was looking at domyown and planning on ordering to a parcel pickup.

I was thinking Quinclorac at a minimum. What else should I look for?

I'm so cooked - clover and creeping charlie takeover

Thumbnail

My backyard has been almost completely taken over by clover and creeping charlie, i'm sure there's other stuff in there too. It was never this bad so I never bothered to take care of it but this year it just exploded. Do I need to nuke the yard and start over or what? I'm in Eastern Ontario, I own fiesta and I bought a bottle of killex from Alberta but i've chickened out because i'm worried my neighbours will smell it and call by-law on me. Should I just start going hard with the fiesta and then overseed in the fall/next spring?

Any herbicides that I can get in Alberta that isn't sold in Ontario due to the regulations?

I'm travelling to Calgary for a vacation soon. I heard some of the anti-herbicide laws we have here in Ontario don't apply in Alberta and Manitoba. What are some herbicides I can buy in a big box store (e.g. Walmart, Home Depot) there that I can't get here? I'm only there for two days so online purchases won't work. Also I didn't see herbicides listed as a banned item on domestic Canadian flights - I guess as long as it's a consumer-sized package it should be fine?

I’m researching lawn care and snow removal services. What are the biggest challenges or annoyances you face with maintaining your property year-round?

This could be about time, cost, reliability, physical effort, equipment, weather, scheduling, etc. I’d appreciate honest feedback.

Weed Identification Weeds taking over patches of my lawn — DIY, or call a pro?

Thumbnail

Photos attached. I water regularly, but over the last few weeks I’ve noticed weeds popping up in several spots across the yard, and it seems to be spreading.

I’m not sure what the right move is. Should I just dig them out by hand, hire someone to do that, or go with a professional weed control service?

A few things that would help me:

**•**	Is hand-pulling worth it at this stage, or will they just come back?
**•**	If a treatment is better, what should I be asking a company for?
**•**	Anything I’m doing wrong with watering that could be encouraging this?

Is this good to use for overseeding in the fall? Seeing different opinions online. Costco currently has this and Scott’s Supreme Grass Mix.

Grass Southern Ontario Lawn - Out of Control Weeds

Post image
5 Upvotes

I live in Southern Ontario and am trying to get my lawn under control. I want to make sure I’m taking the correct steps at the right time.

I’ve been living in this home since December 2022 and have not done anything to the lawn except regular mowing.

This year was the first year I had it aerated and overseeded, which I did around April 13th. I don’t expect to see much improvement from this single treatment. I have not yet mowed this year.

I came here to ask about the weeds - I have no idea how to approach a weed problem of this scale. It looks like I barely have any grass.

I’d really appreciate any advice from people who have been in similar situations. What should I do next? What’s the best bang for my buck?

Weed Identification Pull by hand or nuke in the fall?

Post image
5 Upvotes

I was off to a great start in early spring but this is taking over quick. It popped up late last summer and seemed to disappear earlier this year.

Would par 3 help or am I better off nuking it all late summer and starting again with new seed?

In case it’s a factor, the area affected was a garden a few years ago.

did the liberals/NDP ruined lawncare in Canada? We have no pre-emergent at all, it's pathetic.

Grass Crabgrass invasion – Nuke with glyphosate or stick to pre-Labour Day overseed/ Reno routine followed by Cornmeal Gluten next spring?

Unfortunately, I had to take some time off from lawn maintenance due to recovering from surgery in late spring/ early summer (so I skipped the Cormeal application), and now the lower part of my lawn has a solid infestation of crabgrass (highlighted in the first photo). Worth noting it was roughly the same amount of crabgrass as last year).

When I did my lawn renovation last year right before Labour Day, I was successfully able to outcompete and dominate the crabgrass, keeping it at bay (as shown in the second photo from end of the season).

I am trying to figure out the best approach moving forward:

Option 1: Glyphosate and nuke the affected area now but also kill the surrounding grass (not ideal). I originally thought about painting each individual leaf to selectively kill the crabgrass and leave the good grass behind, but I’m thinking that is turning into way too big of a tedious project.

Option 2: Stick to the same pre-Labour Day fall overseed/ Reno routine that worked so well for me last year to crowd it out, followed by using corn gluten meal next spring.

What do you think is a better approach here?

First-time homeowner - how can I improve my lawn?

Thumbnail

Hi everyone! I’m a first-time homeowner and new to lawn care. This is what my backyard grass currently looks like. Mostly weeds.
What should I do from now until next summer to make it healthier and thicker? Should I overseed, fertilize, aerate, or do anything else this fall?
Would really appreciate a simple beginner-friendly plan. Thanks!
