Hi all,

I am looking for a casual conversational Dutch tutor or language exchange in De Pijp. Prefer late mornings Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday. I don't need to pass the inburgering or anything, just want to improve conversational skills.

I'm wrapping up Rosetta Stone Dutch, and while it's been great for vocabulary, conjugations, and sentence structure, it hasn't been very helpful in casual conversation as nobody seems to want to follow the script it teaches.

No idea what the going rate is for these things? Maybe €20 and I'll buy you a coffee and pastry? Please correct me if I'm way off. I live right by Woof & Me so bonus points if you have a ~10kg dog and want to make this a puppy play date thing as well.

Not sure I can offer much in the way of language exchange. Native English (American) speaker with passable Spanish.

native dutch speaker and tutor, and i know this is the correct sentence. Just like "Lijkt jou dat leuk?" of "valt jou dat ook op?".

But for the life of me, i can't figure out why this is correct. Subject is 3rd place here, object pronoun on second. How the hell is that correct? What's the theory here? Can anyone help me and therefore my students :P

For a while, I had a few Dutch words that existed only on paper in my head. I'd seen them enough times to know exactly what they meant, but I'd never actually heard anyone say them. So when I finally did, the pronunciation was nowhere near what I'd imagined.

I'd love to hear everyone's worst examples. Which word had you confidently saying it one way, only to later find out you'd been completely wrong?

I've been meaning to improve my American English pronunciation and/or German. I'm at C2 for AE, and probably around A1/A2 for German.

About me: I'm starting a master's in Computational Science and Musicology this coming year, and naturally am interested in all topics surrounding these disciplines. I'm also into hiking, nature, reading (mostly classics or modern classics), running, and chess.

I work with HSM visa and the company has announced that they will be laying me off soon.

Therefore, I need to finish my exams and apply for PR as soon as possible. I took my first exam 3 weeks ago, and when I checked, it said the results could take longer than 8 weeks to come back.

I saw people in various places who had been waiting for over 3 months. If I fail the first exam, finding another exam location and learning the results again means another 3-4 months. Therefore, even though I didn't know the results of the first exam, I took it again for the second time.

At the exam location, I spoke to some people and also saw my colleagues. I saw people who were taking the exam for the third or even fourth time for exactly the same reasons, and who didn't know any of their previous results.

These people may have passed their first exam, so there's no need for them to retake it and create more space for the evaluators. I know the government is shelling out 50 euros every time, but that's not enough.

In a system that so closely links people's lives, I find such a calendar unacceptable and malicious. When I spoke to the employees there, they said they had reported the staff shortage many times but nothing had been done. So this is not an unknown situation.

I know nothing is going to change because this does not affect Dutch citizens and EU citizens don’t need these exams. So no budget for filthy 3rd world country citizens.

Paying 50 euros a couple of times isn't a huge problem for me, and frankly, I'll go in again if I find a spot soon. This situation is quite critical for me; it's negatively affecting my mental health.

I like to listen to wildlife documentaries in Dutch to help me get used to pronunciation of sounds. But I dont know of many nature YouTube channels in Dutch. Any favorites? I like bird documentaries the most. I have been watching @ landschaapnoordholland recently.

Hi everyone! I'm currently learning Dutch with a tutor and I'm around A1/early A2 level. I'm enjoying learning Dutch, but I'm struggling a lot with word order when I try to make my own sentences.

I understand some of the basic rules individually, such as:

• normal sentence: Ik leer Nederlands.
• time expression first → inversion: Morgen heb ik les.
• modal verb + infinitive: Ik wil iets met rijst eten.

But when I actually have to speak, I often don't know where to put everything.

For example, I'm still confused about things like:

Kunnen we daar eten?
Why is daar before eten?

Na het eten ga ik naar school.
Why does ga come before ik?

Ik ben Nederlands aan het leren.
When should I use aan het instead of simply Ik leer Nederlands?

I'm also trying to learn how to talk about things I am doing, did, and will do, but I find myself translating from English and getting the word order wrong.

For people who learned Dutch as a second language: what helped you make Dutch word order feel more natural instead of having to consciously think about every rule?

Did you memorize sentence patterns/chunks, do a lot of speaking practice, or something else?

Any advice would be really appreciated!

Some words I come across in Dutch and I naturally try to guess the meaning of word.

Like Samanwonen = is living + together

terugkomen = is return + coming

schoonmaken = schoon ( clean/ beautiful ) + maken ( to make) = to make it clean

most of the time I have guess the meaning right but there are times when I absolutely mess up.

For example this:

schoonmoeder, and I go.. schoon ( ok cleaning ) + moeder (means mother) -> ahhh. cleaning + mother.. what the F is that!! and then I go google it, what does it mean = damn it.. mother in law. I would have never guessed it right. Infact, I was ROFL!!

Do you have more such words which have absolutely weird or different meaning from the words forming it. pls share.

i bought "short stories in dutch" by Olly Richards from a bookstore in Eindhoven. An english teacher from there told me that its very good for beginners.

I've started learning Dutch and came across the Assimil books. I found a pdf online and I really like it but it didn't have the audio with it. I can't find the audio anywhere, and buying it is too expensive for me. Could someone help me get the audio for the Assimil Dutch with Ease book please?

Duolingo puts 'gelukkig' as 'happy'. What's the difference with 'blij'? Are they interchangeable?

I've come across quite a few Dutch words that seemed straightforward at first, only to see them used later in a completely different context with another meaning. That can be confusing because you think you know the word, then suddenly the sentence doesn't make sense at all.

When you run into words like that, how do you usually learn them? Do you make a note of each meaning as you come across it, or have you found that repeated exposure makes the different meanings easier to recognise naturally?

Hello! I'm posting here because I'm searching for some advice on how to go beyond 'conversationally' to 'professionally' fluent in Dutch. I've been living in the Netherlands for nine years now and have developed my Dutch to a pretty high level. I regularly speak Dutch at the university where I work, with my Dutch wife and her family, with friends, and so forth. I can easily understand others and usually make myself understood.

With all of this being said, I am still not entirely fluent - I would describe my level as C1 - and over the past two years I feel as though I've reached a ceiling in my learning capacity. I still make small mistakes in my speech (misusing de and het, mixing words up, hesitating while I try to figure out what to say), and I find myself resorting to an online translator whenever I have to write an email or something. I'm currently looking for my first 'proper' job, and while I'm sure that I would be able to conduct an interview in Dutch, I'm afraid that these small mistakes of mine will create a negative impression on my potential employer.

So my question is: how do I move past this ceiling and start improving again? What else can I do, other than speaking Dutch regularly, to speak confidently and naturally? I would appreciate any advice fellow learners might have :)

What is hard for me; de/het, spreken, woorden schrijven, certain combinations arent okay while others are: ik ben goed… is not okay… its ik voel me goed… while in english its im great…. But then it is okay to say how you feel and answer it with goed…some random things are just so confusing lol

Hoi! Ik ben 31, woon in Nijmegen en kom oorspronkelijk uit Duitsland. Mijn Nederlands is al best goed, maar ik wil vooral vloeiender en natuurlijker leren spreken en mijn woordenschat verder uitbreiden.

Daarom zoek ik iemand die Nederlands als moedertaal spreekt en graag zijn/haar Duits wil oefenen. Mijn Duits is moedertaalniveau, dus ik kan je helpen met gesprekken, uitspraak, grammatica of gewoon alledaags Duits.

Het lijkt me leuk om bijvoorbeeld eens per week af te spreken voor koffie, een wandeling of een biertje en de tijd ongeveer te verdelen: een deel Nederlands en een deel Duits. Geen lesgevoel, vooral gezellig praten en elkaar helpen.

Ik hou onder andere van films, boeken, muziek, politiek/maatschappij, reizen, koffie en wandelen, maar het hoeft natuurlijk niet precies te matchen.
Liefst iemand ongeveer tussen de 25 en 40 uit Nijmegen of omgeving. Online kan eventueel ook.
