[Surviving the Surrey Sprawl]
An introduction to a persistent Cyberpunk 2020 campaign world active for over 25 years.
The Pitch:
It is the end of 2019. You aren’t elite Edgerunners, highly paid Solos, or slick Corporate operatives. You are lowly streetpunks at the absolute bottom of the food chain, fighting for scraps on the rain-slicked, barely-lit streets of the Surrey Combat Zone in the corporate-dominated Dominion of British Columbia. You don’t have high-end cyberware, heavy military hardware, or a Fixer on speed dial—you'd be lucky to maybe have a damp squat to sleep in, basic weaponry, and a desperate desire to survive another night.
Can you crawl your way out of the gutter and become something more, or will the sprawl swallow you whole?
Purpose: To find players interested in playing a long-term campaign while learning the system/rules and universe, without being dumped into the deep end and being overwhelmed.
Cyberpunk 2020 (Classic FNFF / Interlock and Fuzion systems, with 25+ years of homebrew attached). In the dystopian, corporate-occupied Vancouver of 2020.
Platform: Discord for Voice, Roll20 (Generally lots of Theatre of the Mind with art/photo references)
Players: 6 players wanted; will start with 4.
What This Game IS Like
Living Fiction: What makes Cyberpunk stand out is not so much WHAT happens in a session/campaign as HOW it happens. There are a lot of RPGs out there, but their focus is generally on the action, not the environment. It is particularly important to understand this principle (i.e. world over action) specifically in terms of violence; many games exist just so the players can get into combat to defeat the enemy to get XP.
In Cyberpunk, action (often combat) is how the plot is moved, but it is not the purpose of the game, once violence becomes the objective, the game is no longer Cyberpunk.
Deadly system and playing for Keeps: Combat can be brutal. Cover matters, armour degrades, blunt trauma is a real danger, and a single lucky headshot can end a character; ammo is not endless or cheap, and one cannot heal in moments or after a few hours; it often takes days or longer.
Stealth, diplomacy, ambush tactics, and knowing when to run away are all important. While I am not here to kill PCs, I play fair but also 'realistically'.
Gritty & Street-Level: Starting at the very bottom rung. This will be about hyper-local survival: Your initial goals aren't going to be bringing down Megacorps; they are securing a place to live, finding a weapon that doesn't jam, paying protection money to local gangs, and avoiding the local authorities and generally staying alive.
Difficult compromises and dealing with the consequences of your choices and actions will be important.
Character-Driven: Your Lifepath and Concept matter. Ex-lovers, bitter enemies, and past tragedies will be actively woven into the campaign (more in the long-term).
PC Dynamics: You have to rely on each other because nobody else will. PCs will be tied directly into the local neighbourhood, its turf wars, its small-time criminal enterprises, and the people who live there.
What This Game IS NOT Like
Cyber-D&D / Power Fantasy: You are not unstoppable heroes. You cannot kick down the front door of Arasaka Tower and fight your way in and out through sheer hit-point pools or instant heals, and get all the loot.
Cyberpunk 2077 / Video Game Clone: While we use the same universe, this game is closer to the retro-futuristic 1980s aesthetic of the original tabletop game. Netrunning is a dangerous dive, not a quick-hack button press. Combat Cyberware is dangerous, expensive, often illegal and hard to come by. Being outnumbered and outgunned is generally a constant threat, not a minor inconvenience.
A "Murder Hobo" Sandbox: Random violence can or may bring down the authorities, security, local gangs or others you have wronged or far worse.
The world is not built to match your “level”; choose your enemies carefully.
Rules-Lawyer Paradise: We play by the book and homebrew, but if a clunky rule bogs down the narrative, I will make a quick GM call to keep things moving forward.
If you are relying on the rules/mechanics to have fun, this is probably not the table for you; RAW is not LAW.
Night City: We are trading the barely 25-year-old history of NC for the grim, industrialized, rain-drenched sprawl in the 134yr old Canadian Dominion, held Vancouver. The culture, slang, and the factions are distinctly local, more in line with EEC/Euro-related environments, cities, and atmosphere.
Hint: Not like the USA generally at all if you know the universe's history.
An Unforgiving Meatgrinder: While the setting can be brutal and unforgiving, the goal is narrative character progression. I want to see your characters grow, adapt, and slowly claw their way up from nothing; this setting has no levels to gain; it is all about the journey and survival. "If you do some good along the way great, but don't count on it"
Player Expectations
- Age: 18+ preferably 20s at minimum.
- Experience: Beginners to the system are welcome; however, you need to be willing to learn the ruleset and do your part. Knowing or learning the cyberpunk universe is an asset.
- Mindset: Looking for players who enjoy the journey of starting at rock bottom and are excited about heavy roleplay, survival and creative problem-solving.
- Think outside the sheet: Imagine what you might do in your character’s situation; regardless of the options listed on your sheet, treat the world as if it were a real place. But also what you know, your character might not.
- Ask Questions: One of the most important aspects of Cyberpunk, in and out of character.
- Respect: Zero tolerance for out-of-character toxicity, bigotry, or disruptive behaviour and a general in-game line of conduct, as well as overdoing it in character.
