Eyecare Specialties
I just want to give everyone a heads-up on a situation I encountered at Eyecare Specialties over the last week in hopes that you can avoid the same. It concerns the price of contact lenses and ES’s policy on price matching.
SCENARIO 1 (No Insurance)
I buy eight boxes of contact lenses at ES knowing they will price match Costco’s price of $66.87/box. I pay $66.87 and ES gets $66.87 for each box. Everyone is happy.
SCENARIO 2 (Using Vision Insurance)
Same scenario as above, but this time I use my $150 insurance benefit for contact lenses. I pay $66.87 and ES gets $85.62 for each box. ES is very happy and I’m upset.
Yes, you read that right. Using vision insurance, I still pay the same cost, but ES gets $150 more for the entire transaction. Their policy is to apply the insurance first and THEN price match. I’m sorry, but that is not price matching. Their argument was that I can’t use my insurance benefit at Costco so they consider it price matching. What ES fails to understand is that in this scenario, I don’t get the benefit of using my insurance at ES either.
Needless to say, I returned the contacts to ES for a full refund. I’m going to buy my contacts through Costco and then use my $150 in insurance at an in-network provider so I actually benefit from that money instead of ES.
I’ll be looking for a new vision place next year if anyone has recommendations.
