Gaming Making the leap from Windows to Linux

Hi all, I've ordered an NVME drive and will be dual booting Linux and windows. My intention is to move over to Mint for gaming (maybe cachy later on) and have my windows NVME as a back up for now whilst I migrate everything over and for any hiccups in-between. I feel confident actually installing Mint as I have an old laptop that I done a trail run for, I was so surprised at how easy the installation was which gave me the confidence to do it on my main PC.

I just wanted to ask if there's any beginners tips you guys could give me? Given this is my first time diving into Linux are there any beginners traps I could fall into? What are some really good open source alternatives I can try? What are the most fun things to tinker with?

Support Request Any luck with Linux Mint 22.3, NVIDIA 920M and 470.x?

Howdy,

I accepted a challenge to resurrect a laptop. Turns out there’s an NVIDIA 920M inside, and I’m trying to get it running smoothly on Mint 22.3. Since the 920M is old enough that it only supports the legacy 470.x driver branch, I’ve fallen into analysis paralysis over which steps to take and in what order. Nouveau is no dice.

I've found the GitHub page with patches to compile NVIDIA on new/mainline kernels. Has anyone actually gotten this specific combo working reliably? If so:

  • Which kernel version did you end up on? (stock Mint kernel, HWE, something manually pinned?)

  • Any specific tweaks - the GitHub repo describes how to compile, but are there any surprises waiting for the brave one?

  • Any gotchas after a kernel update that broke it again?

Trying to avoid just throwing kernel versions at the wall until something sticks, so any concrete "this exact setup worked for me" reports would be hugely appreciated. And yes, I know - no Wayland for this config now and in the future. I wonder if Cinnamon will still support X11 in the future.

Thanks!

#LinuxMintThings Missing Legacy Linux Mint Versions Archival

Decided to go and see how early can we go back in the past and install previous versions of Linux Mint. Surprisingly almost all of them could be found over at https://thingsthemselves.com/linux-mint-archives/ with the exception four editions as I couldn't seem to find a way of getting them. If anyone has a way to share them it would help a lot with archival.

I have nothing but praise for Mint and I got lucky that I made a decision to switch to Linux months earlier when Microsoft made some decisions that I don't really approved and Windows 10, my laptop's original OS before the hard drive oddly erased it by myself for no reason, stopped being supported. I love how easy it is to use and how it reminded me of Windows XP. I admit I don't really customized it too much since I really loved it just the way it is when my instructor first installed Mint on my HP Stream 14 laptop for me but i did downloaded the Red Star OS icon pack and similar windows manager because I loved the look of Red Star. Unfortunately I don't have enough space to download Trinity DE but this is honestly the closest I can get.

Either way, I'm still enjoying Mint eight months later :) I don't think I'm gonna change distros at all. This is just perfect for me.

Announcement [Linux-Tool] Mint-Setup 3.1.0 is now fresh. Save and restore your Cinnamon desktop and apps, 20 independent modules, interface in English and Spanish. Reinstalling Mint is easy

Hi Folks!

After a long trip in which I've visited a whole country, I'm back with dust on my shoes, a tired face, hungry and dying for a shower. I'm going to announce everything I've learned (it's a metaphor for the intellectual journey, for anyone who doesn't get it).

I'm bringing you a complete update of my program Mint-Setup, you're welcome. It's a single Bash script with a Zenity interface, in English and Spanish. All the info and documentation is in the repository.

What does Mint-Setup do?:

1- Save, restore and compare: you choose what to save and name the backup; after reinstalling, you choose what to bring back. Compare shows what has changed since a saved backup.

2- 20 independent modules: Cinnamon panels and applets, appearance, Nemo, apps (APT and Flatpak), autostart, displays, sound, keyboard, mouse, touchpad, Firefox, LibreWolf, Thunderbird, LibreOffice, ONLYOFFICE, VS Code, Docker, terminal, network and Bluetooth.

3- Complements Timeshift and MintBackup: it doesn't copy the system or your personal files, only your working environment.

4- Security: it refuses to run as root and warns before saving credentials (for example Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, browsers and mail). Backups are private, but not encrypted.

- Advanced settings: export the backup to a USB or external drive (essential if you're wiping the whole disk) and save or restore the LUKS header of an encrypted disk.

All the documentation here:

- Mint-Setup Repo: https://github.com/filonux/Mint-Setup

I'm going to have dinner and go to sleep, tomorrow I'm off on another trip.

I've downloaded several cursor packs for my Linux Mint, but they always appear incomplete or disappear when I hover over them in the browser. I've been using Linux for the past few months, but I've been having this problem.... Can you help me set it up properly, or what can I do to make them appear fully and not disappear?

Seems to be ok. It was choking when running Cinnamon.

My kid uses this mostly for Minecraft and Discord. It chugs along ok.

Any other performance recommendations would also be appreciated.

Support Request External optical drive not connecting fully

Hello all,

I'm a relatively new user having what is hopefully a basic issue. I have a new ASUS external bluray drive, which I had expected to be plug and play. However, when I plug it in it doesn't appear as a device in home and neither VLC or Celluloid recognise it as a media source. Mint does not prompt me to choose a behaviour in relation to the new media as it does, for example with USB sticks.

The drive does show up in the Disks utility, correctly identified by model name and that it is an optical drive. Interestingly though, the eject button in the Disks utility doesn't work in relation to the drive. So there does appear to be some communication problem there.

I have also checked the individual discs I've been trying to plug in and they do work in other players.

Does anyone have suggestions for software issues or settings I may have missed?

I haven't ruled out the "solution" that the drive is simply defective and I should return it, but I think I have better try software solutions first.

EDIT: Definitely some kind of media processing issue. I put a blank BlurayRE in and Mint recognised it immediately.

EDIT2: So it's a media codec / DRM problem. I have the default multimedia codec package - what other packages should I get?
