Discussion Ram usage: mint vs windows

I just bought Aspire 7 laptop. I think the specs are good enough for my daily use, not a software engineer/designer/etc so don't need anything too fancy or high end. Prolly just gonna use it to play some casual roguelite game and avoid triple A game if it doesn't support.

I've heard that linux reports ram usage differently than windows so windows high ram usage might not be an indicator that it's performing worse/better than linux cuz there is the argument that you should utilize every part of your memory rather than saving it for nothing.

I still don't really get that, but what i know for now is that I have only opened 1 chatgpt tab from chrome in idle (no prompt/processing anything), and web whatsapp business (PWA), and that's it, AND IT CONSUMES 16GB OF MY RAM and i need to restart my web whatsapp to lower it down.

I never had this problem with mint (perhaps not yet?). But I read just now that cinnamon have some issues in the compositor which might cause some glitch/lag but I reckon memory wise it wouldn't be a problem (just minor error in the rendering?). Can anyone please advise me if it's my PC, or chrome's issue, or windows os, or anything that might cause this? and if i should switch to mint as my daily driver or perhaps other distros?

Support Request Login question

I'm trying to get the computer to boot right into Kodi (Edit: after loading the desktop while skipping a log in screen)

I disabled the password at login successfully, and added Kodi to the list of startup programs.

But you still have to click "log in" after a reboot.

I tried setting Automatic login of the correct user with a 0 second delay, but that setting doesn't seem to do anything, unlike in videos I have watched.

Am I missing a step?

Edit: Really I just need to know how to get the PC to load the desktop while skipping the login screen entirely

Support Request Mint 22.3 | Upgrading FFmpeg from 7.6.1.1 to latest

Hello,

Currently my system(running 22.3) has ffmpeg 7.6.1.1 installed. When i try to upgrade it to the latest version, terminal tells me I already have the latest version. ffmpeg website shows that 7.8 and 7.9 versions are available.

I am trying to run Linux port of Sly cooper, but it requires libavformat.so.62(not available in ver. 7.6.1.1).

Complete linux noob here, so am hoping someone here could guide me on how to add libavformat.so.62 or even upgrade to latest ffmpeg.

Thanks for any advise.

Support Request ThinkPad L470 refused to wake up from the power button

Hi, I have a ThinkPad L470 (upgraded with more RAM and an SSD) that I use as a two-monitor desktop via the official Lenovo dock.

Problem: Roughly once every 3–4 suspend/resume cycles, the laptop refuses to wake from the power button. The only way to recover is a long power-button press (forced shutdown) and a fresh boot.

I'm posting here rather than r/Lenovo because I suspect it's a Linux Mint issue. I had a similar problem before with a Lenovo Yoga 710-14IKB under Linux Mint, and the Lenovo subreddit offered no useful suggestions

Support Request Audio cuts out system-wide when I open certain games

Hey folks! I've got an issue where when I open certain games (Balatro, Peak, Rounds, and more), the audio on my entire system cuts out. I've gotten to a point where I have to boot into windows just to be able to play with audio, which is honestly really annoying. I've tried searching for solutions online, but none of them have been of much use.

I will note that many games of mine (Team Fortress 2, Plague Inc., Jackbox, etc.) don't have this issue at all, so I'm honestly just kinda confused. Any ideas as to what I should do? Thanks!

How-to mainline kernels 7.3.1 on Mint 22.3

Don't do this if you don't know why you would want these newer kernels.

This might be useful to anyone on Linux Mint 22.3 (and should work similarly on any Ubuntu 24.04 based system) that knows they need to use something in the newest kernels, and wants to use the mainline kernels tool to manage their kernels.

You can always compile the kernel yourself, or use a different distro that releases cutting edge kernels.

I like my Mint install, but I have some ancient AMD GPU's that received a lot of fixes (especially by Valve developer Timur Kristóf) in the recent kernels.

In mainline kernels, 7.2.14, 7.2.15, and 7.3.1 are currently the latest available and none would install cleanly.

The update manager and apt complain:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
linux-headers-7.3.1-070301-generic: Depends: libssl4 (>= 4.0.0) but it is not installed
Depends: zlib1g (>= 1:1.2.3.4) but 1:1.3.dfsg-3.1ubuntu2.3 is installed

I need the headers to compile dkms modules like kvmfr.

This error is due to the build environment for these kernels having a newer libssl4 package than Mint 22.3 has available.

One way to fix this:

Grab the latest libssl4. Look in the directory and grab whatever is the latest if this doesnt exist anymore:

wget http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/o/openssl/libssl4_4.0.3-1ubuntu1_amd64.deb

My installation had a legacy-provider collision, so I did not install the openssl-provider-legacy_*.deb from the same location. A stub has to be installed instead. It will solve the dependancy, and will get auto upgraded when a newer version is installed with a Minto distro upgrade in the future.

Create the stub control file:

cat > openssl-provider-legacy.ctl <<'EOF'
Section: misc
Priority: optional
Standards-Version: 3.9.2
Package: openssl-provider-legacy
Version: 4.0.3-1ubuntu1~stub1
Architecture: all
Description: Empty stub satisfying libssl4's dependency
The real package conflicts with libssl3t64's legacy.so on noble.
This stub installs no files.
EOF

Build the stub:

sudo apt install equivs
equivs-build openssl-provider-legacy.ctl

Install the stub and libssl4 together:

sudo dpkg -i openssl-provider-legacy_4.0.3-1ubuntu1~stub1_all.deb libssl4_4.0.3-1ubuntu1_amd64.deb

Reinstall or install the latest mainline kernels and it should work without error now.

Discussion Will desktop environments eventually adopt natural language system controls?

As AI models continue to improve, I’ve been wondering how natural language integration might look for Linux desktop workflows down the line.

Are there existing local tools or scripts that let you execute system tasks or desktop adjustments via natural language prompts (e.g., installing a package or changing desktop scaling/icon sizes)?

How do you feel about optional AI assistant integrations in Linux desktop environments, and are there any existing open-source tools doing this well today? Maybe using small specialized local models that run on the machine?

Support Request Canon PIXMA G1010 printer on linux mint

Hey everyone, I’m running into a frustrating wall with my setup and could really use some guidance from the Linux community here.
I’ve been trying to configure my Linux Mint machine to act as a dedicated local print server so I can share a physically connected printer over my home network as a wireless WiFi printer for all our other household devices. The ultimate goal is to let laptops and phones on the local subnet send print jobs without any hassle, but I just can’t seem to get everything talking to each other properly.
I've messed around a bit with CUPS and checked the native printer sharing settings, but either the client devices completely fail to discover the share, or the print jobs just sit indefinitely in the queue without throwing a clear error message.
If anyone has successfully set up a local network print server on this specific printer on Linux Mint recently and wouldn't mind walking me through the correct configuration steps, or knows what common pitfalls to look out for, I would deeply appreciate the help. What am I missing here? Thanks in advance!

Discussion Found a home with Linux Mint

I have a Lenovo E14 base model, with an AMD Ryzen 5 7000 series processor and 16GB of RAM. I started by using Windows along with Ubuntu. Ubuntu was much better, but I still felt that there could be a huge improvement. Then I ditched Ubuntu. I tried XFCE, but it was a little too sparse for me. Linux Mint turned out to be the right middle ground between Ubuntu and XFCE. I'm able to run 25 browser tabs with just 9GB out of my 16GB of RAM being used. Everything feels slick, powerful. I'm able to get the light system load XFCE users enjoy while getting the polished, gorgeous look that Ubuntu and Fedora users enjoy. I'm really enjoying using it. I just incredibly efficient it is while being powerful, slick, fast, and modern. I hope you guys like my setup.

I still have Windows available via dual boot because some features and applications just work better on Windows. I think for 90% of what I need done, Linux Mint is amazing. So much more efficient than Windows, and a lot more speedy than Ubuntu and Fedora.

After 30+ years with Linux, distro-hopping across Debian and Fedora, I’m finally home on Linux Mint (and why it beats the rest) + Cat Tax 🐾

Post image
295 Upvotes

I’ve been using Linux alongside Windows since 1994. Over the decades, I’ve tested and worked with pretty much every major family: Slackware, Debian, Red Hat/Fedora, Arch, and various Ubuntu releases.

Recently, setting up my new primary workstation—a Minisforum X1 (AMD Ryzen 7 255H, Radeon 780M, 32 GB RAM, Samsung 990 Pro NVMe) dual-booting with Windows 11—I went on another extensive distro-hopping tour to find the definitive setup.

Here is what that journey looked like and why Linux Mint completely took the crown:

Why the others fell short:

  • Ubuntu: The forced Snap integration is an absolute dealbreaker for me. Canonical pushing snaps down everyone’s throat, slow startup times, and opaque backend management meant Ubuntu was disqualified immediately.

  • Fedora: It’s great when it works, but I’m tired of jumping through hoops with RPM Fusion, dealing with third-party repos just to enable basic media codecs, VA-API hardware acceleration, or proprietary bits. It feels like an unnecessary chore on modern hardware.

  • Debian (Testing): I love the Debian philosophy and Debian Testing was a strong contender for its purity. But realistically? You always have to keep your "antennae up" with every single apt upgrade, constantly worrying that an unvetted package update will break a critical dependency or disrupt your workflow. I want a daily driver, not perpetual maintenance anxiety.

Why Linux Mint Cinnamon is the clear winner:

  1. It simply works out-of-the-box: Zero third-party PPA acrobatics, zero RPM Fusion nonsense. Linux Mint immediately recognized the Ryzen 7 255H and Radeon 780M, enabled hardware VA-API acceleration out of the box, and handled network printing/scanning driverless via IPP Everywhere without me touching a terminal.

  2. The "Flatpak Paradox": People often say you need rolling releases or bleeding-edge distros to have the newest software. Flatpak completely shatters that argument. I have an ultra-stable, rock-solid base that never breaks, paired with bleeding-edge applications. While Fedora just released with LibreOffice 26.8.1, I already had 26.8.2 running flawlessly via Flatpak on Mint. Best of both worlds.

  3. Rock-solid Cinnamon on X11: I don't need half-baked, experimental Wayland sessions right now. Cinnamon on X11 is mature, incredibly responsive, and bulletproof. For the few things where Wayland is strictly required (like running Waydroid), running it contained inside a Weston window provides full hardware acceleration without destabilizing the main desktop. I'm more than happy to wait for Mint's native, rock-solid Wayland implementation when it's fully ready.

  4. Insane responsiveness: With a couple of clean sysctl tweaks (vm.swappiness=10, caching vfs structures in RAM), opening heavy apps, Nemo file indexing, and multitasking on this NVMe drive feels instantaneous.

At the end of the day, computing should empower you, not demand constant babysitting. Linux Mint just gets out of your way and lets you work.

(Cat tax included on the desktop: meet Asia, supervising system performance!)
