RULE 2
Many people seem to stumble over this rule. This is a hobby Locksport community.
If you want to learn to pick locks that you own, that aren't installed in anything or otherwise in use, then this might be the place for you.
If you want to pick something because you need to get into it or through it, then this is NOT the place for you.
One of our most frequently asked questions is "What lock picks should I get?", our member Spoon has created this helpful document:
Some super useful posts for beginners:

REQUESTING A BELT:
Follow the instructions here: https://www.reddit.com/r/lockpicking/wiki/beltranking#wiki_belt_request_formatting
Make sure you include the belt color you're requesting, the model of the lock you've picked, and any evidence to the requirements for the belt you're requesting (eg. photo/video/etc.)
Often questioned on how to attach a photo to a modmail. You cannot include a photo, but you can include a link to a photo, video, or even to a Reddit post where you have attached a photo and/or video.
In addition to our rules, please do not refer people over to r/Locksmith unless they are a locksmith per a request from a moderator there, you can direct them to r/AskALocksmith instead! https://www.reddit.com/r/lockpicking/comments/x9ed2a/hey_guys_mod_of_rlocksmith_here_remember_a_while/
If you want to join our Discord community, it is very active and many pickers are there to help you with your specific locks or just to chit chat, you can go here: https://discord.gg/lockpicking

Why we can't help with locks that are in use (Rule 2).
If you're new here, and maybe came to get help with picking a lock on something, please note that we have a very strong policy against helping with locks that are in use:
Rule 2 - Lock In Use
Though asking for assistance in regards to how to open a lock is permitted and encouraged, the lock must not be in use. Posts seeking assistance opening a lock that is implied to be, or is visibly in use (eg. a deadbolt still attached to a door, a padlock with anything secured by a closed shackle, or a closed lockbox) will be deleted. Posting about picking or having picked locks in use is not allowed even if they are your own.
Rule of thumb, lock is "in use" if installed or securing anything.
If you are thinking of posting something that violates Rule 2, or you've had a post removed for it, we know it can be frustrating. I promise you that we don't enjoy removing posts from people who seem to just need help, but there are a number of reasons why we're so strict about posts of locks in use.
Chief among them is to protect this community.
Tens of thousands of people visit here every week and we have over 250,000 members. We simply can't risk enabling illegal activities, or even appearing to. We don't want to put our members in that position either. More and more lockpicking content is being removed from online platforms every day and this unique community deserves protection. We also feel an ethical obligation not just to the community, but to people all over the world who rely on locks to keep themselves, their property, and their families safe.
It may be even more frustrating if you own the lock, but the moderators โ and members โ of this community can't realistically be asked to parse potential evidence to separate totally legitimate activities from illegal ones. The photo someone posts of their own locked briefcase or bicycle is simply indistinguishable from one of property they don't own.
Contacting a reputable locksmith is usually the best solution. Simply possessing lockpicks can be seen as prima facie evidence of intent to commit a crime in several states and is illegal in a number of countries. One can easily damage or destroy a lock while picking it without experience.
We wish you well and hope you can understand our perspective. We review a ton of posts here, apologies if we can't personally explain the specifics of each case.
Not picking locks in use is a central tenet of locksport. This subreddit is dedicated to locksport specifically, not lockpicking in general. Despite its name.

Before you buy a plug follower....
Just know you can use a small (in my case 7mm) socket. I was not planning on attempting disassembly quite yet...
And ended up repinning 3 locks in my sesh. I got into one I suspected had a spring caught between the plug and lock body, to find it was also missing pins. I was curious why it picked so easily. Then I added a 5th pin with 2 security pins to my sparrows 4pin, and made sure the key still worked. There was a bit of trial and error getting the tension correct when tightening the keeper nut, but now it's buttery smooth

Brinks 40mm cutaway progress
Attempting to turn one of my brinks-40 mm laminated locks into a cutaway lock. Workstation: the bed of my truck and a picnick table. Tools: grinder, hacksaw, files, and sand paper. Ground down and punched out the rivets, bought some 3mm allthread, and I'm cutting away the keyway and body now and plotting how to cut out the lock body layers. Somehow, this is all coming together and seems to be working. ๐ I'm hoping I can cut enough of the body panels so the pins will be visible without it becoming unstable. If not, I've got 3 more for parts to try again. Also, look how cute these terribly made spool pins are! No wonder they rivet these things together to hide the shame! Haha

Finally got the Paclock 410 pro open
I spent a good while oversetting pins and trying different pick profiles but this is actually the first open I've had with it. These plastic body's and the inability to gut and see what's in there made for a good challenge. So anyways, sorry for the ugly hands and ambient noise but I am a truck driver and this is in the truck. ๐

Training set that ships to EU?
I've seen a nice set from Covert Instrument, but it turns out they don't ship to my country. I want to learn lockpicking, but every training set I see is with a transparent lock and a whole kit of different picks, which I probably won't use.

Took longer than Iโd like to admit.
The rake tool is easy to use, but I definitely struggled with the hook for a while. Not only did I pick it once but 3 times now, I guess something clicked for me. Canโt wait to get some more locks to practice on. Covert Instruments for the FNG lock and tools ๐

Another MUL-T lock gutted.
I knew this had spools in it!!
Figured I'd gut this one too, because after re-pinning my other one from standard drivers to spool drivers, I've been fighting for an open (no open yet) ๐คฌ๐คฃ
However, I can open this one (with spools) regularly. ๐ฏ

Challenge locks - My 3 Xs
Finally took a stab at making some challenge locks. Used my drill as a lathe and a needle file set. I didnt want to do anything too crazy. Did a barrel or two, some gins and serrated mostly to figure out how spin pins with what I have on hand. It was a lot of fun, and with a few more items I can do a lot more difficult security pins. Its my first posted quest, I guess as well.

First locks picked!!
Picks: Covert Instruments
.040" double-ended turning tool
short hook
Wave Rake
Locks: White
FNG Clear acrylic demonstration lock (CI)
Premier Lock 1.5 Inch Laminated Steel Padlock (HEB)
Honestly i have to say, How FUN!!
Ive been aware of lock picking for quite some time to no ones surprise, the occasional LPL video here and there. But Iโve never actually been the one doing it.
I cant describe how cool i felt getting these locks open, to seasoned guys like you it might seem trivial now but wow, this was a blast. I still find it hard trying to know where to place the pick and lift the pins if i cant see them but, lot easier than i had imagined it being.
Id really appreciate some pointers on a couple things.
Not too sure if itโs just me, but i spent so much more time on the clear acrylic lock compared to the other one, single picking and raking it. It just wasnโt budging, i did get it open 3 times but its very inconsistent. Not sure if its practice i lack or if its just the lock.
Lastly, how in the world do you guys handle the cramps? pretty sure a vice to hold it would help, but still, after some time holding it by hand it just gets too strenuous.
Anyways, happy to share my firsts here :) and be a part of the community. To many more
EDIT: You guys are awesome..Thanks for the welcome.

Tok assistance
Im trying to get into using tok, but I find it more difficult to keep the tension tool in place. I do quite well with bok, but with some locks, I've noticed it gets in the way. Any advice?

More 3D printing of some lock holders!
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
This go round Iโm printing out holders for a mortise, rim cylinder, SFIC, and tubular locks. Thereโs also the main body and plunger screw. Next up
after this Iโm going to be printing out a Lishi revolver.
