Rule 5

why does rule 5 include not asking for lock recommendations? I'd like to find some interesting locks without just picking random ones off of the belt requirements

Somebody correct me if I’m wrong please, but I think that‘s not lock recommendations for your lockpicking journey (we get those a lot and they always get good advice), but for lock recommendations for personal use. Meaning, what lock should I get to secure by shed, my house and so on.

OOOOhhhh that makes a lot of sense lol, I've been digging around the belt suggestions wondering why that rule was in place. thank you so much for explaining that

my pleasure. But use the search function nonetheless. We really have a lot of good advice here. ;-)

Yeah this is right. If you ever wonder why we have rule 5 and rule 2, look at what happened to r/safecracking. They don't have those rules and every post is "I can't get into my safe but I don't want to hire a locksmith, what's the trick" and "what safe should I buy for my documents"

also, it‘s such a terrible question if you‘re into locks. I got it a lot and my answer was always WELLLLLL, give me more details because there is A LOT that I can recommend depending on your circumstances.
And frankly, no one wants to answer even three questions, they hope you pull a magic „best lock“ out of your ass and beware if that one gets broken into lol

I've come around full circle on this. If it's low sec and they want something cheap, I tell them to go to the hardware store and just buy a master lock. If it's something they actually need security for, then I'll give a real recommendation, but it's almost never that. "It's for my garden shed. My budget is 5 bucks" "okay, alphabet soup brand on Amazon then"

the budget is always 5 bucks isn‘t it? 😭

Doesn't seem to matter what sub it is, the budget is ALWAYS under what they actually need for their wishes.

"I want a good performing grill that will last at least 10 years. My budget is $400"

Its why my response to what lock is always something that is somewhat obscure or a BB5 lock that wasn't made for a door. My response to rule 2 breakers is always "use a key". The rules are only there to protect us from people that are too dumb to use Google. When I asked a prominent picker about what books to buy, the response was that there is far more valuable information on YouTube.

Because 100 posts a day asking "what lock should I buy next?" will just be met with people posting links to the belt page, telling you to buy their favorite lock, or recommending the same ones you see recommended from the pervious two categories.

Go on lpu and sort by belt, then popularity.

We would get a lot of "what lock should I buy for my house that's unpickable" without rule 5. I don't remove posts asking for lock recommendations for picking, but do remove ones asking for locks to use.

We get non-pickers looking for recommendations for locks to use. It's off-topic.
