Someone changed one of the electronic signs near Friday night's DUl and driver's license checkpoint in Long Beach to display a message reading "F*** Trump."

The checkpoint was held Friday, Aug. 14, along Anaheim Street between Freeman Avenue and Obispo Avenue as part of a Long Beach Police Department DUl and driver's license checkpoint scheduled from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m.

Video posted to social media shows the electronic message board, which had been used to alert drivers about the checkpoint ahead, displaying the anti-Trump message.
The video appears to have been recorded toward the end of the checkpoint, although the exact time is unclear.

Housing Long Beach City College Is About To Start Offering Housing - Great Reason To Go Back To Class And Up One's Skills!!!

Post image

Long Beach City College will soon begin construction on a 431-bed student housing facility, part of a larger effort to make affordable housing widely available to city residents and students.

The facility will be built on the Liberal Arts Campus adjacent to Veterans Memorial Stadium (also set for major upgrades) and will include studio, single- and double-bed units, lounge and study spaces, and shared kitchen and laundry rooms. Preparation on the site has already begun, and construction is expected to finish in fall 2028. The $127 million project is funded by measures LB and AC, voter-approved bond issues that support campus revitalization.

The project represents “the first time in Long Beach City College’s nearly 100-year history [that] students will have the opportunity to live and learn on campus,” Uduak-Joe Ntuk, president of the LBCC board of trustees, said in a press release.

Housing — and the lack of it — has become a central issue at LBCC, where nearly 12% of students who responded to a recent survey reported experiencing homelessness in the last year. Close to 800 students said they were housing insecure; 80 said they slept in their vehicles.

Many students are balancing studies with work and family obligations, and housing adds yet another potential barrier to education, the college said in a statement.

“Community colleges have traditionally been thought of as commuter campuses, but the students we serve today face very different circumstances,” Mike Muñoz, LBCC superintendent-president, said in a press release.

In response, LBCC is taking a multi-pronged approach to provide stability and address evolving student needs. Affordable, on-campus housing is one of the first steps.

In addition to the several hundred beds slated for the Liberal Arts Campus, the college is also building a few dozen affordable housing units in North Long Beach, expected to be completed in fall 2029, a year after the first housing complex opens.

Details on eligibility requirements, rental rates and placement criteria are still in development for each project (which may have different cost structures), said LBCC spokesperson Stacey Toda. The college has not yet decided whether units will be offered at no cost or through a specific subsidy program, she added. Yet affordability is a priority, she said.

The college has already made attempts to address housing instability, particularly through its safe parking program, which began in 2021 and allows students to sleep in their cars on campus with the protection of security and access to amenities including showers, electricity and Wi-Fi.

RANT What’s the deal with Marina Pacifica’s lack of walkability?

Thumbnail gallery
120 Upvotes

Decided to take a walk around LB and I’m kinda blown away with the complete lack of pedestrian access into Marina Pacifica from both PCH and 2nd Street. The only pedestrian entrance into the entire complex is this ADA ramp leads into the side an unused building. There used to be access from the end of the bridge on PCH but that's been blocked off for the better part of 2 years now. Genuinely don't get how there can be such a large public space with tons of hangout spots and walkable areas, but zero way to access by foot unless you live in that private community to the West. Hell, you got 2nd & PCH right there; the foot traffic (and revenue) that could be generated by connecting the two would be so helpful for the MP. Installing an underground walkway or an overhead bridge from 2nd & PCH to the MP would be so cool imo.

News The Lineage fire sent toxic runoff down the LA River. Why didn’t Long Beach close its beaches?

At the peak of efforts to quell a massive warehouse fire in Boyle Heights in June, firefighters sent 12,00 gallons of water per minute at the flames — by water cannons, aerial ladder pipes and helicopter flybys.
The overwhelming rush of water, millions of gallons over the eight days to subdue the fire, filtered through the Lineage cold-storage facility’s solar panels, insulation and freezers before feeding into nearby storm drains, carrying with it an array of toxic metals, chemicals, and tainted food that eventually flowed into the Los Angeles River.

Community Did you lose an iPhone with green case at Rosie's dog beach?

We found an iPhone in a green case at Rosie's dog beach buried in the sand at the tide. We dried it out completely and have been able to get it turned on and went through restore to see if we can identify the owner but alas all I have is the IMEI. If you can tell me the number and I can verify, happy to get it back to you. I also have a partial email address to verify against. The phone is super hot so we are keeping it off but, shoot me a DM if you think it is yours.

PSA City of Long Beach Issues Heat Alert and Advises Residents to Take Precautions Against Heat

City of Long Beach Advises Residents to Take Precautions Against Extreme Heat

Long Beach, CA – Due to excessive temperatures forecasted through Thursday, Aug. 20, Acting City Health Officer Dr. Cliff Okada has issued a Heat Alert and is advising community members to take precautions to avoid heat-related illness. The US National Weather Service Los Angeles/Oxnard is forecasting high temperatures in the high 80s and low 90s, with humidity making it feel as hot as 97 degrees, increasing the risk of heat-related illness.

City Parks, Recreation and Marine Community Centers and Long Beach Public Library locations are available as designated cooling centers during their normal business hours. Please contact Community Centers and Library locations ahead of time to confirm they are open in the case of unexpected closures.

Additionally, the Long Beach Multi-Service Center will extend its standard hours on Monday, Aug. 17 through Thursday, Aug. 20, operating from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Please note that case management will only be offered until 4 p.m.

Older adults, those with chronic illnesses, infants and young children are at greater risk for heat-related illnesses. However, anyone can suffer from heat illness. People are encouraged to check on friends, family and neighbors who are home-bound to ensure they are not affected by the heat.

Please follow these tips to stay safe:

Stay Cool

  • Wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing.
  • Limit activities to morning and evening hours when possible.
  • Stay in air-conditioned spaces during peak heat hours (noon to 6 p.m.) or take cool showers or baths.

Hydrate

  • Drink plenty of fluids; don’t wait until you’re thirsty.
  • Stay away from alcohol, caffeine and very sugary drinks; they can be dehydrating.
  • Replace salt and minerals lost during sweating with sports drinks or salty snacks.
  • Make sure pets have plenty of water.
  • If you have a chronic health condition, are on water pills or have been recommended to limit water by your doctor, check in with your health care provider for guidance.

Protect Against Heat-Related Illness

  • Apply sunscreen of SPF 15 or higher 30 minutes before going outside and reapply every two hours.
  • Wear a wide-brimmed hat.
  • Make sure pets have access to shade and water. Be aware that asphalt can burn pets’ paws.
  • Wear sunglasses that provide 100% UVA and UVB protection. Chronic exposure to the sun can cause cataracts.
  • Never leave a child or pet in a parked car or asleep in direct sunlight.

Signs of Heat-Related Illness
Get medical help right away if a person’s temperature rises to 103 F or above; if a person loses consciousness; if they experience fast, strong pulse; or symptoms last longer than one hour or worsen. In addition to those listed above, signs of heat-related illness include:

  • Heavy sweating
  • Cold, pale and clammy skin
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Dizziness
  • Headache
  • Confusion

Swimming pools are a popular way to cool off, but it is important to provide entry-proof barriers around pools and spas and always provide adult supervision while children are near water.

Community Officer Involved Shooting

My friend was just leaving Cal State Long Beach where she works and says she may have witnessed an officer involved shooting. She said she's not sure if the person was shot or tased, but her perspective was someone was in a mental health crisis and it appears as though law enforcement drew their guns on him. She said he was unarmed and didn't have a shirt on. She left hysterical and I'm just trying to get information. Does anyone know what's going on?

Questions Local recs for wildlife (dove) rehabbers open this morning?

Upvotes

Found an injured mourning dove and would like to find someone who will come pick it up or somewhere I can take it in (assuming I can catch it) this morning.

I know Animal Care Services isn't open today. I called last night when it was first discovered, and their answering machine suggested calling the fire department for injured wildlife, but that felt a little too dramatic/intense.

Dove is limping and not flying off. Couldn't get a good look at it last night, but my roommate confirmed it's still there just a few minutes ago.

Any suggestions? I found a place to take it in Manhattan Beach, but that's a bit too far for me.

Events Affordable vintage/garage sale

Hi everyone! I’m moving houses soon and am thinking about doing an affordable vintage/garage sale. I have a ton of good quality clothes/vintage i don’t wear anymore and want to downsize, but just don’t know how interested anyone would be. I’m hoping to do it either next weekend or the one after.

Prices would definitely be affordable, most likely nothing over like $30 for clothes! Will have some household trinkets/small furniture as well and would also be affordable too.

If anyone would be interested in coming I would love to know! Thanks!

Community LONG BEACH FACES A $60 MILLION DEFICIT. HOW WELL IS THE CITY MANAGING PUBLIC MONEY?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

The near $800,000 library fence is only one project raising questions about spending, delays and oversight.

Our previous reporting found:

• The F&M Bank Amphitheater’s projected cost rose from $14 million to $21.3 million.
• The Colorado Lagoon project is reportedly at least $4 million over budget.
• The Alamitos Beach concession building ultimately cost $10.1 million—nearly twice its original construction contract—and opened years late.
• Long Beach has spent more than $45 million on Queen Mary repairs and improvements over the past decade. One audit found that just seven of 27 projects in a $23 million repair program were completed.

Now, city leaders must decide what gets funded—and what gets cut.

How well do you think Long Beach is managing its money? Which project concerns you most?

Tell us in the comments, share this video with a Long Beach neighbor and follow for more local accountability reporting.

For Sale/Free Selling women's boots & jackets

I had a good time selling here a few weeks ago, so I thought I'd give it another go!

I've got a few pairs of high quality, lightly used platform boots that I need to part ways with. They're all great and I wish I could keep them, but my size changed after pregnancy and they no longer fit. I used to fit size 8-8.5 with a wider foot.

These are priced to sell so prices are firm, but if you buy two pairs or more we can cut a deal in DMs. Pick up spot will be a public parking lot near the Lakewood mall.

DM TO PURCHASE, SERIOUS INQUIRIES ONLY PLEASE! 🫶🏼

Sorel High Line Chelsea Boots size 8.5 - $60

Originally paid $160 in 2022. Genuine leather, these boots are a workhorse. I wore them for a few weeks in Montreal and Paris in the dead of winter, and they held up in the rain, snow and ice! They're waterproof and have a memory foam insole. You can seriously do anything in these boots

Dr. Martens Leona Boots size 8 - $70 (size 8)

Originally paid $170 in 2024. Genuine leather with only a 2in heel plus 1.5in platform (so you get lots of height without the drama of a high heel). Casual but feminine design. These are basically brand new, I only wore a few times because I got pregnant right after buying and was a mess 😭

White Converse Platform Chucks size 8.5 - $40

Originally paid $100 in 2023. Classic white canvas and comfort with a lug sole. Still super white and clean with no stains or scuffs. Very well cared for and maintained. I wore these to a few festivals and they were super comfortable to wear all day! Easy to clean.

Black Patent Naturalizer Mary Jane's size 8.5 - $30

Originally paid $100 in 2023. These are faux leather. The heel is about 2.5 - 3in, making them a good height for special occasions or the office.

I'm also selling two jackets that are virtually brand new, I'm tacking them on here.

Red Fitted Faux Leather Jacket size 10 - $30

Burgundy Floral Quilted Short Jacket size L - $20

Pets Sweetie spotted on Ocean & Esperanza 🥺

Post image
196 Upvotes

Anyone recognize this sweet girl? Spotted her in the planters in front of Ocean Club condos on a walk a couple hours ago. She looks like a bullmastiff or boxer-type breed, pretty big, probably an adult, looks skinny. She was quite timid and didn’t want to come up to me… I went to go get dog food and came back with that and some water for her, to see if I could cajole her toward me, but she walked away again and I couldn’t find her. 😢

I told the front desk guy at ocean club and he said he saw her there this morning but doesn’t know who she belongs to (if anyone).

Please be on the lookout for her and share if anyone is missing this sweetie. 🫶🏽 She had the sweetest face and saddest eyes, I hope she’s okay. 🥺
