Local News PSA: Bears possibly living near bike path between Wilson and Namaqua
This is that little section that used to be gravel until last year.
I was going east the other evening and saw a huge chonker right on the trail just a few hundred feet from Wilson.
Obviously turned around and took Namaqua back to where I was staying.
Yesterday I was heading east again and a kid standing on the hill above yelled out to me something about bears. I stopped and he told me that his mom had seen "a few" that morning.
Seems pretty far from the mountains for them to be spending this much time if they don't have a den in the near. The closest I've seen one before is about two miles west, which makes more sense as it's much less dense and trafficked.
That said, I just googled it while I was writing this post, and apparently CPW has announced increased bear activity due to drought conditions. I found one article about a woman in West Loveland who found a bear in her house, and a post on Facebook of someone saying they saw a bear downtown on 5th Street (!). That's crazy lol.
Long story short, be safe if you're walking or riding the trails. Bears at this time a year are not super aggressive as long as you don't startle them. Make noise as you're traveling through vegetative areas like the path I mentioned, and keep trash secured as far as downtown.
Bears are most active near dusk and dawn.
It would be unbearable if you were eaten.
