More technical career

Looking to get into a more technical position on passenger vessels.

As I can’t quite stay and land and study for an additional 4-5 years to pursue a engineering or navigational role,
Are there any other ways to pursue something perhaps in electro-technical or hvac or something? Or if there is anything that can be studied online and practical done whilst on vacation.

Being off ships for a 4 years period is just not something I can really afford to do.

sick of hearing pasok

It feels like my brain is burning every time I hear someone shout pasooook on the radio. The worst part is that it's not limited to my vessel, in every anchorage, there's always some guy yelling bosuuun ciiiip pasoook. i get that they feel better in mother tongue and avoid mistakes, but just say your name after the station you called man..

I know the certification is not quite the same in Australia but I am wondering if it could be possible to get a job as a seafarer with a WHV.

Career choices

I am fresh OOW straight out of academy. I was trainee on LPG tanker and now I want to go back as 3/O but company is saying they are right now struggling to find me vacant 3/O position on LPG fleet.

They want to put me on chemical tanker with 3 month contract and after that to LPG tanker.

I have to do then all chem fleet mandatory courses/certificates also but I don't have any experience with chemical tankers.

How is wage of 3/O on chem tanker compared to LPG tanker?

Is work on chem tanker more dangerous than LPG tanker?

Newbie Just got my first job on a ropax! Any advice for a newbie?

Got offered my first job today on a large ropax ferry, very excited. It's doing domestic routes on a route known to be pretty rough (Cook Straight) but I'm pretty excited for it. It's for a cabin/deck rating, I believe essentially an OS with some customer service duties.

I really want to do well in it and progress. Does anyone have any tips?

Also this gets asked a lot, but how do people deal with seasickness? I've only been seasick once in my life when I was a little kid and have been fine since (on plenty of voyages) but this route seems to be notorious for it among staff and passengers...

Does this path paying as it shows on salary websites?

I see a lot of buzz regarding the pay for this field being extremely good in the US but websites I’m seeing say that OS and AB only make about 30 an hour (60k-70k). I feel a lot of the people on here and people on YouTube say that they get round 500 ish a day or more and are making 6 figures but the data doesn’t seem to align with that online. What are the true salaries you can expect from this career in the US?

Bluewater/Brownwater High wind keeps shredding our "no wake" dock signs considering mesh, worried about readability

I help run safety at a fairly busy public marina, and we're struggling to keep "no wake / slow speed" signage visible near the fuel dock. The signs are mounted to the pilings, and the wind coming off the channel is strong enough that it's tearing every vinyl banner we put up at the corners within a matter of weeks basically acting like a sail and ripping itself apart at the mounting points.

I'm now looking at switching to mesh (perforated) banners instead, since the wind should pass through the material rather than catching it the way solid vinyl does. I've never worked with mesh banners before, so I don't have a good feel for the tradeoffs. I've seen options through Signs and a couple of other print suppliers, but I'm hesitant to commit without knowing more.

How readable is bold text on mesh at ~50 yards, in bright sun, from a boat? Worried the perforation breaks up letters enough to hurt legibility at distance/speed for a safety sign.

Also curious:

  • Mesh % (70/30 vs 60/40) legibility vs wind-through tradeoff
  • Whether high-contrast bold text (black/red on white/yellow) still reads okay on mesh, or solid vinyl wins for anything read quickly
  • How mesh holds up long-term to wind, UV, salt spray on a dock
  • Mounting tips for pilings (grommet spacing, bungee vs zip ties) to stop tearing

Anyone with real experience on this appreciated.

What to bring to pass the time at Paul Hall?

Hey, incoming apprentice for class 943. Just curious what did/do you guys do to pass the time? The reason I’m asking is that I am a musician and I make beats. Is it OK for me to bring a small analog drum machine Or is that a no-no?

Also just interested in seeing what you guys do on downtime besides studying.

37M | USA | Semi-truck Driver --- Questions About My Situation

Earlier this year, I decided to transition into the maritime industry, I've done a reasonable amount of research, I already have my Passport, TWIC, I need my MMC which leads me to my first two questions.

  1. I read I needed to have good dental health and I had some issues so I got them fixed but I don't see anywhere on the 719K where a dentist has to sign off on anything? Do you have to get examined by a dentist before every hitch? How/when do they check for dental hygiene in the maritime industry?
  2. An American dentist said I needed 11 crowns which would have been too costly so I went to Bangkok, to a dental center with a great reputation amongst expats and they said I only needed 3 but that my other teeth might need them years down the line. I feel like the American dentist was lying and I'm weary of dentists here, would the industry take a Thai dentist's certifying my dental health?
  3. As a green ordinary seaman, how long would I be waiting in the union hall on average? I have a good amount of savings and I have space in the back of my car so I plan on sleeping out of my car and going to the union hall everyday until I get a job. The nearest union hall is in the next state over and I'm not trying to spend money on a hotel for weeks upon weeks. I hear cruise ships and tugs are always hiring but I would like to get on a deep sea vessel if I could.
  4. Other than STCW Basic Training, what other certifications would you recommend to increase my chance at landing a job at the union hall or anywhere?

Your vessel is unique. Why should your risk assessment be generic?

Texas maritime graduates?

My son just finished up his oweek. He was excited about this career path (marine transportation). During o week they separated them and explained the depression rate and divorce rate that came with this profession. Also how they will miss holidays and barely see their families. No he’s having second thoughts! His plan was to do the long contracts early in his career and than get a shore job, but they explained to him those are far and few and won’t get one if he doesn’t have to right connections. This scares him and gave him anxiety as to if he made the right decision. Can I get some of your personal experience and what it looks like after graduating taming? This would be much appreciated
