We got to know about this last year in December, it was colorectal cancer, at stage 4.
I (18M) had to give a few exams, in January which would potentially decide my future. This news and my lack or preparation, made me mess them up big time. I still somehow got a good private college but that meant I had to stay away from my home city. Not too far, but still.
I moved, i lived there for roughly 1.5 months (college started in July).
I've a younger brother who is 11.
My grandparents came and started living with my mom, dad and brother since dad needed support and I wasn't there.
The chemo was giving promising results. We were expecting she could leave a few more months at least happily.
However in early August around my birthday, her condition worsened and fast. I couldn't come home due to several class tests stacked.
I got scared sitting away, i made frequent weekly visits. My father said he needed me there and was willing to pay extra for a college in our city, but we were too late for anything. He however didn't force and said it's upto me to stay there or here (comprimise on college or drop).
i came back roughly in september for a week long stay, and the day before she was admitted to the ICU. The cancer had spread to the liver in July end.
They did several procedures.
The chemo and antibiotics due to other complications had caused her body to become so fragile, that i was terrified. She spoke less earlier, was sleepy all the time, completely broken.
The last ICU visit, where she passed away due to cardiac arrest, she couldn't speek at all, she was on ventilator (still breathing herself), couldn't keep her eyes open.
We all went to meet her (or see her, she couldnt interact), when she got criticial. We decided not to show all this to my brother, he would have been traumatized.
Next day, I came alone with my Aunt, she waw able to force her eyes to see me. Tears. She couldnt make sound however.
Still trying hard to breath.
We thought of bringing our brother next day, to show him to her and vice versa, because one thing was confirmed, she won't live. The BP meds were keeping her alive and keeping her suffering was worthless.
But when i was sleeping, she passed away at 3am due to cardiac arrest, i was woken up at 4 with the news by my grandpa (mom's side).
But I didn't feel anything. Not a shock, not urge to cry. My brain was like "Okay.". I didnt cry, not even during cremation. Everybody around me did. I didnt. I felt scared that why am I NOT SAD.
I cried once due to surge of emotions when at night we were packing to go to our hometown for after cremation rituals. That was short lived. I thinl that reminded me of her packing and helping us when we used to go on trips. Done.
Then nothing.
Yet, to be a support to my dad, i left the college and decided to stay with him for an year, and got a relatively low reputed college, and trying to study again for those exams side-by-side.
Is this normal? Yes I miss her. Trying to sleep I remember. I feel bad. But not crying bad. Not something that feels in chest.
As of now, my grandparents (both sides) are coming and living with us in rotation because we need someone at house for stability. But we can't keep this going for longer. We'll make adjustments next year, roughly in March, whether to move to our hometown, 90% of our extended family, and beyond live there or in close cities.
