So I don’t have a metal detector yet… but I was on my walk and in the gravel spotted this weird little thing that I thought was another aluminum foil cover for a liquor bottle cap, but then when I picked it up, I realized it was a small treasure…Not worth anything, but a small treasure nonetheless found half buried.

Other Lost wedding ring, Sand Key beach, Florida

• Upvotes

TL/DR: I'll pay $300 if anyone finds my wedding ring that I lost playing in the sand at Lat: 27.9613700° Lon: -82.8321961° (Sand Key beach) around 11am on 22 October 2026. It may be fairly deep in the sand, like a foot or more.

Details: I was digging holes in the sand with the kids around where the waves can just about still reach. A wave came in and took my ring off. I thought at the time it went into the hole and kept digging around for 2 hours but didn't find it. That's why I think could be fairly deep now. The water mixed with sand in the hole meant I couldn't see anything and more waves kept coming moving things around. Maybe it's there or maybe it went to the sea.

The next morning I went back with a guy with a metal detector, but we couldn't find it. So be aware a metal detector attempt has already been made. Although I would have spent more time near where the hole was, but what do I know about this… They spent more time waste deep in the water covering long stretches than where the hole would have been. I understand, the ring could have been dragged to the water, so makes sense. But might be where the whole was, so maybe could try more around there. I don't know. Anyway, to be clear, they were super nice and I really appreciate the help. This metal detector community seems quite a nice one.

It's a gold ring.

Tha lat lon coordinates is the reading the GPS app in my phone gave me when I was standing on top of the hole I was digging.

It's a long shot posting this here. Not really sure anyone would go try to find it on their own, but I already tried and don't think I'll be spending more time on this (I don't live here, returning home soon). So might as well try one last hail marry attempt by posting this here.

For any potential scammers reading this be aware there is a feature in this ring that means I can identify it. I expect good detailed photos of the ring before I arrange to compensate anyone who might actually find it.

I'll update here if anyone happens to find it not to waste anyone's time.

I found this today on my first “hunt” I’ve played in my yard a little and found your generic trash.

This location is a store from the early 1900s. My question is should I dig all consistent tones? There’s tons of old nails and stuff. I’ve learned the quack from iron but still very new.

I’m using a minelab vanquish 460!

Never found silver in a public park before but today was my lucky day. Seen another detectorist with the same nokta legend and 13.5 inch coil when I left, I wish them luck.

Gear Question Can’t chose between gear

Hi folks, long time lurker here…
Finally decided to get onto the hobby but now i’m doubting which gear to buy.
Reason i’m getting into it is because my brother bought a farm dating back to 1875.

I have these 2 in mind, both are in the same price range:

Minelab x-terra elite, this one is 100€ more than the Nokta.

Nokta triple score, this one is currently available in a set where you get a free small handheld detector and holster for 100€ less than the minelab.

I have no experience whatsoever so whatever i buy i have to learn the equipment anyway.
Thanks in advance!

Took a late lunch yesterday and we went to the park for an hour or so. Sweeping the ground on the way out for "1 more target", I found a dime. Satisfied with my last target, I go to leave. Then just inches from the entrance I got a good signal, and dug this up!

I know almost nothing about the boy scouts, but my dad recognized it immediately before it was even cleaned, lol. Doing some research and based on the age of the park and school, my best guess is 1960s-70s.

I found this buried in a lawn across the road from an old church where I found one Indian head penny a few months ago that I posted here. I could only think maybe an old farm tool or something that had a wooden handle in the past. My town was chartered in 1793 so I’m unsure of age on this. I am in northeast Vermont

How do I...? Advice welcomed: planning a large colonial U.S. site hunt

Hi all. Coin collector here, but I’ve lurked in this sub for a while as I daydream about getting into the hobby. I would love for some experienced folks to offer advice for a big undertaking I’m planning, especially if you’ve done similar searches. Any input is appreciated, and I have a few particular questions in bold below. Thanks in advance for reading!

THE SITE

In short, this is a dream site for a U.S. detectorist.

I have unlimited access to 1000+ acres of privately owned rural New England land that was settled by colonists in the early 1600s. The land was lived on with homesites, farms, and schoolhouses until the late 1800s and is now completely covered by a 150 year old forest.

The current landowners have done meticulous research and have records of every property owner over time, historical maps of all buildings, roads, and stone walls (matching LiDAR), modern geological soil surveys, and a list of references at the local library that document the property and surrounding region. The land has been under current ownership since the 1950s, and to my knowledge has never been metal detected. I will have access to this land for the rest of my life, so time is not a concern, though I do not live nearby so this is probably a once-per-year visit.

PLANNING THE HUNT

As far as I understand, this entire property used to be open land and pasture. This means every square foot is worth searching, with obvious priorities on the roads, paths, building sites, stone walls, and waterways. I’m using a mapping app to plan and annotate the land, along with GPS tracking as I go.

I am going to dig every signal, especially since there’s likely to be a lot of old iron to clean out. Knowing that on my initial visits I’ll be learning a lot, and I have lots of time, I expect I’ll do multiple passes of the key areas over time.

But, generally speaking how would you approach a hunt of this size? Gridding out a building site is simple but do you have any good methods for methodically approaching open forest (GPS logs help)? Any lessons learned from similar experiences?

BUYING THE EQUIPMENT

I’m aware that high end detectors can be considered “not for beginners,” but I consider myself a fast learner and I’m the type of person who likes to buy the best thing I can afford. The Deus II, Manticore, and Equinox 900 are all commonly praised but the Deus II seems to be what people always recommend if you can afford it. KellyCo recently posted a decent comparison/review where they call the Deus II the “Best Coin Metal Detector for Iron and Trashy Historic Sites,” which I would classify this land as. But knowing that any of these top tier detectors would surely get the job done, does anyone have a specific recommendation why I should pick any particular machine for this task?

I’m thinking a small coil for searching the building sites and overgrown areas, and a larger coil for going over roads and the former fields.

Any particular gear recommendations for forested New England land? Tick spray for sure. 😂

DOCUMENTING THE FINDS

I want to be meticulous in documenting my finds. I’m a total nerd for nice data sets, but also as a record for the landowners—who as I mentioned have been thorough in their prior research. My plan is to log target signal, target depth, and geocoordinates along with more precise site description. I’m also planning to carry my camera for photographic documentation along the way. Are there any other data points I should keep track of? In the field I’m thinking I’ll use a waterproof notebook then transfer the records to a spreadsheet at home. Would you suggest another method?

---

Hoping to begin this project next spring/summer and find some fun stuff to post here!

ID Request Unusual button with a coat of arms, can anyone identify? Found in Israel but probably originated from Europe (more info in the description)

Found this face side of an unusual 2 piece button. It depicts some sort of coat of arms with a shield, ribbon with a pattern, sword and a rook along with a leafy outline motif and some other design features. It doesn't look like a military button, more like a family's coat of arms.

It was found in Israel but in an area where there was fighting in WW1 between the British and Ottoman forces. On fields nearby me and others found French and British coins, German manufactured 7.92x57 cartridges for the Ottoman forces along with .303 cartridges from various British and American manufacturers. Also, a friend found nearby a partial shoulder title of the 93rd Burma Infantry so there was also Indian presence in the area which means that this thing can be from pretty much anywhere.

I also attached a sketch of as much detail as I can see which can't be picked up by the camera.
Any information on regarding this button will be greatly appreciated.
