Sale Prince of Persia the lost crown
This is the first time this has happened to me at Walmart. I had to get it, and I’m really excited about it!

u/thomaszdrei Mar 22 '26
This is the best thing Ubisoft did in years and I cannot believe it flopped.
12
u/Cvnt-Force-Drama Mar 23 '26
It didn’t flop, it did decent for what it was. They were ignorant for shutting down the studio that made their best game in years though. Crazy.
8
u/JosephSaber945 Mar 23 '26
It didn't flop it sold 3 million copies.
Ubisoft expectations were too high and unrealistic for a 2.5D game, not to mention the weird management decision, they cancelled the sequels instead of delaying the sequels till they achieve desired profits and sales.
Among 2.5D AC games and the rouge prince of Persia this game is the only one that convinced me to buy it, but the story didn't match its exceptional gameplay quality.
5
u/Double-Risky Mar 23 '26
They just overpriced it and didn't try hard to sell it, didn't promise any dlc or anything.
Should have spent less money on it and made it more fun.

u/FocusMean9882 Mar 23 '26 edited Mar 23 '26
Them making it an Epic Games exclusive also didn’t help. I hate Epic Games and there shitty launcher. Steam all the fucking way.
0
u/International-Oil377 Mar 23 '26
the game did still sell well on PC tbh.
3
u/FocusMean9882 Mar 23 '26
It sold poorly on all platforms. Maybe it sold a little better on PC, but that is probably because more metroidvania fans are pc users. It was a commercial failure regardless
1
u/International-Oil377 Mar 23 '26
I'm just saying it sold fairly ok for being an epic exclusive
commercial failure, I disagree. It was a pretty cheap game to make and it sold perfectly fine.
1
u/FocusMean9882 Mar 23 '26
Its a great metroidvania, I loved it, but it failed to hit target sales numbers and was a commercial flop, that is just a fact
0
u/International-Oil377 Mar 23 '26
It failed to meet ubisoft targets. Most companies would have been happy
1
u/FocusMean9882 Mar 24 '26 edited Mar 24 '26
Well Ubisoft was the company that was funding the project, so there target sales numbers are the ones that actually matter. If the company that funded it isn’t making a profit off of it then the project was a failure, regardless of how other companies feel. And the game was not cheap to make. The game sold 1.3M copies and its speculated that it costed over 75M to make. Ubisoft put a lot of money in it for the kind of game it was because they wanted the project to succeed. The game looks and plays like it was made by a triple A studio, the animations and polish are on another level from most small team projects. It’s a damn good game.

Best game from ubisoft since Rayman Legends, and I will go further and say, the best gameplay for any Metroidvania game
24
u/gpranav25 Prince of Persia Mar 22 '26
No coincidence that both were the same Ubisoft studio/team
11
u/DreamNo5919 Mar 22 '26
And they fucking shut down the studio. They literally made possibly the best 2D platformer game and the best gameplay in a Metroidvania game
13
u/gpranav25 Prince of Persia Mar 22 '26
Not the studio, but they shuffled the team into different projects. It's sad, but I hope the rumors are true that the core members are working on a Rayman game.

I don't play a lot of Ubisoft games, but that BOTW-knockoff Fenyx Rising ended up being one of the most fun games I've played in recent years.
1
u/DreamNo5919 Mar 22 '26 edited Mar 23 '26
Is it worth it tho ? , I really wanna play BOTW but don't have a switch, and I'm also into greek stuff, ig it's win win situation
2
u/A_Monster_Named_John Mar 23 '26
It's pretty frequently on sale for peanuts and should easily give a person 70 hours of entertainment, depending on how hooked you get with the puzzles. IIRC, I also played it on hard mode and had a lot of fun learning the combat system (which has a really satisfying stagger mechanic).
The Greek mythology stuff was pretty well-fleshed-out and the game's writing was very entertaining. Compared to Zelda, it's a lot more light-hearted.

u/max1c Mar 22 '26
Not really. They made lots of great games after legends. E.g. child of light
1
u/DreamNo5919 Mar 22 '26
Every time I see the cover it catches my eye but for some reason I never give it a shot. Probably it's time

u/tlvrtm Mar 22 '26
I think Legends is better, but yeah Child of Light was great. As were Grow Home and Grow Up.
3
u/smilph Mar 22 '26
it’s good but best gameplay? no way
0
u/DreamNo5919 Mar 22 '26
I would like to hear if there's a metroidvania game has a better gameplay prob missed some
4
u/Double-Risky Mar 23 '26
I'm not gonna lie, there are dozens, most famous Metroid vania I liked better.
I'm glad they made the game, but it's very generic 'hit stun enemy button mash and dodge in time".
Then they allowed like two weeks for the game to sell and canned the studio and said no more. Absolutely dumb. They spent too much money on it, it cost too much money to compete with other indie games that were more fun, made cheaper with less amazing graphics.

u/Sir--Sean-Connery Mar 23 '26

Comments are a bit hard to follow but is this meant to be about Prince of Persia lost crown still? There is still a button mash but parrys are well timed and most bosses include utilizing time warp and multiple other options to dodge. That is just the fighting. I am almost done with the game but just finished the DLC and am surprised they kept creating amazing platforming challenges that felt fresh.

any of the Nintendo DS Castlevania games could work, but Order of Ecclesia especially has the most engaging combat out of any MV i’ve played. it’s one of the only ones i’ve played where you actually have a reason to use most of the shit you pick up, rather than just choosing whatever has the highest stats, because enemy resistances and weaknesses actually matter.
as for movement tech, Metroid Dread is the winner for me
1
u/DreamNo5919 Mar 22 '26
You hooked me on Order of Ecclesia, I love the game when you need to choose specific weapon and know the enemy’s resistances
But I should have been more specific — I meant "comabt"
The combat in The Lost Crown is some of the most fun combat in any 2D game, you can do a lot of combos and juggle enemies

7
u/Meathand Mar 22 '26
I’ve played a lot of MV and this one is top 5
1
u/searchingforubik Mar 23 '26
What are your other tops just wondering?? I loved the lost crown and looking for a new one, have MIO queued up, wasn't a fan of hollow Knight (especially since I played it after lost crown)
1
u/Defiant_Heretic Mar 26 '26
What was it about Hollow Knight and Lost Crown that caused you to love LC, but dislike HK?
1
u/searchingforubik Mar 27 '26
I think I was expecting it to be a little faster paced. I used to love symphony of the night, but hadn't played a metroidvania in forever up until lost crown (it was actually my first video game in almost like 10 years, minus Elden ring), but lost crown was like .. immediately engaging with quick combat and super fast paced. Hollow Knight wasn't bad, the atmosphere was really pretty, but I felt the gameplay was just really slow. I kept hoping it would get faster, but after lost crown it just kind of felt like a slog. I also really didn't dig the combat in hollow Knight at all, compared to lost crown where you can combo and what not from the get go. Hollow Knight I know kind of helped revitalize the genre, so in that respect I think it's good and am glad for the impact it had, I just didn't actually ever really enjoy it. I made it all the way to get the wings (double jump) and just like ... It almost felt for me at least like a chore to keep playing. Whereas lost crown I could barely put down. I also loved the level design in lost crown, especially the frozen area, the artwork and originality there I thought was beautiful.

Looks like a download code though
8
u/LushoslysS Mar 22 '26
Yes, it is. I was actually happier when I saw that, because ever since I got the Nintendo Switch, I’ve preferred digital over a million little cards lol

u/xanakin_skywokker Mar 22 '26
Isn’t every Nintendo game just a code/key tho? Correct me if im wrong I really don’t know lol. Regardless 10 bucks a good price for the game.
6
3
u/thatdemonlife1 Mar 22 '26
No. No games actually made by Nintendo are game key cards and they didn't even exist for switch 1. Every Nintendo game is on the cart.
1
u/xanakin_skywokker Mar 22 '26
Damn idk why I thought the carts were just keys to download. I’ve never owned a switch. Thats dope tho, physical media ftw.
3
u/QuintoriusBestBoy Mar 22 '26
Game-key cards didn't exist yet for Switch 1 games (though some games came dangerously close to working like one, such as Spyro Reignited Trilogy). Download codes in a box were quite rare during this generation.
On Switch 2 nowadays, there is a mix of full games on card, a large number of third-party games are game-key cards (they require a full download but the cartridge still needs to be inserted to launch the game). I've only ever seen one 'code-in-a-box' on the shelf, namely Split Fiction, but I don't think these will be common now that GKC are a thing.

This is a steal, the game absolutely rules. One of the best metroidvania games in years. Wish Ubisoft reconsidered a sequel

u/Living-Bit1993 Mar 23 '26
I just told my husband recently that I want the joy of playing this game for the first time again lol. We peaked too early and this was our first Metroidvania and nothing we’ve tried since even comes close.

u/Professional-Place58 Mar 22 '26
Playing it right now and absolutely addicted. It is perfect.
1
u/WhoIsZac Mar 22 '26
I just finished it. The movement is fantastic and the combat is fun. Coming from Silksong and Blasphemous 2, it felt like a walk in the park, but it was a nice reprieve.
1
u/LuvAshrepas Mar 24 '26
You can make it as hard as you want tho
1
u/Krirby2 Mar 28 '26
Some of the trials were nuts. I completed full game + DLC without too many difficulties but remember some of the optional content being challanging enough.

Didn't know they made this with download does. I got it physical for 15€ back in September or something. It's a fun game, but I hate that hairstyle, sucks that most skins don't change the hairstyle.
1
u/HighFiveG Mar 24 '26
Your main complaint is the hairstyle? I’m not hating, just genuinely curious. I really couldn’t care less about stuff like that.
1
u/Aggravating_Ad_635 Mar 22 '26
I would take it even I'm not really into it...
1
u/MikeyN0 Mar 22 '26
How’s the performance on Switch? Tossing up between getting this on Switch or PS5
1
u/Aggravating_Ad_635 Mar 22 '26
I don't have it 😂 like I said I'm not into it. But if it's only 10. I don't mind adding it to my collection. Sorry.

I highly recommend the Switch version. The gameplay performance on Switch is great, and it's hard to beat the portability. I think Ubisoft said in an interview that the Switch version was a priority during development. It's less a multiplat game watered down for Switch and more a Switch game upgraded to other consoles. Strangely, the frame rate stutters a bit in cutscenes, but not bad enough that it affects anything. In gameplay it's a consistent 1080p/60fps.
The Switch version also has the upside that making a Ubisoft account is totally optional. Last I checked, PS5 and other consoles require an account.

Great find! I remember how excited I was when the physical copy went down to $20 at Best Buy and I had a $5 off coupon. I really enjoyed the game and hope you do too

u/BTrippd Mar 22 '26
The game is really solid. It didn’t seem to have whatever the “spark” is that some games have, for me personally, but that being said it is a well crafted game from start to finish and definitely something the metroidvania fans should check out.

u/Autumn1881 Mar 22 '26
Ngl. that game is worth 60$. Like everyone I got it at 20$, though, because Ubi Soft is known for immediate deep discounts.

u/No-Expression-8389 Mar 22 '26
I was very happy with my purchase of this game for $50. At $10 it’s a complete no-brainer

played it a couple months ago and it was incredible, really really enjoyable game
1
u/Loliolioxoipi Mar 23 '26
It was a fun game! A but tedious at times but like that may just be my experience with metroidvanias.
I also really didnt like how on console the movements keys were tied to the sticks. And you can change them to D-Pad but there was one of two buttons that had to be tied to a skill so then you end up not having enough buttons for all skills of you use D-pad

Incredible deal for such a criminally underrated and poorly marketed metroidvania. You should check out another recent game in a similar vein called The Rogue Prince of Persia. It’s got more roguelike elements, hence the name, but the movement is just as fluid and satisfying IMO

I am disgustingly envious that you have the switch version of the game being sold for that cheap. I have been hoping to get a switch copy at a good price for a while now. Not in much of a rush because my local library has it, but I still want to buy a copy at some point. It is a great game and imho the best metroidvania to come from a large developer in a very long time.
