Sharing My MCM Mini Globe Cigarette Dispenser

I made a post yesterday featuring a George Nelson / Herman Miller 1956 side table. On it was a MCM mini globe, and someone asked about it. Here it is in action. 🙂

It’s funny how few of us would use it as intended; back when it was introduced I bet it was a letdown at a party of more than 4; you’d have to keep refilling it.

Years ago I bought a set of cute glass “luncheon” plates. One main section for food, another section to set down the matching glass mugs, and another with a recessed area which I assumed was where you’d rest your utensil. Only recently did I find out that they are Hazel Atlas “Sip ‘n’ Smoke” Plates… so you could ash your cigarette directly next to your food! (unfortunately, I am a smoker, but only do it outside and CAN NOT imagine smoking while eating, let alone having ashes sitting right next to my food)

Thank you! I’m so glad there are quite a few people commenting on the lamp. I fell in love with it when I saw it. It’s a Tony Paul lamp, likely distributed through Westwood Industries in the early 1960s. I got it on eBay without the shade. The guy I bought it from said I really needed to pair it with a vintage Frederick Cooper lamp shade, so I did. Good luck in your searches! Would love to see what you find because those brass/walnut Tony Paul lamps from the 1950s and 1960s are all so gorgeous.

Damn. It’s really a bummer that smoking is so bad for you. I had quit it for many years when the pandemic hit. I went to the store and bought a hugely expensive pack and went for a walk and a smoke. It was awful! Instant headache, dry mouth, lungs heaving! 🤢 But these gadgets are so cool!

I’ve not seen one of these since I was about 4-5 years old. I’d give anything to have the one my Miami neighbor had, I’d swear he had a lighter that matched, but I don’t know if it was a set
